College Student or Business Owner
This project was very exciting for me because I knew exactly who to interview and someone who would be different than most. I decided to interview my friend Wesley Bloeme who is a fellow student that founded “College Student Pressure Washing”. My grandfather was in the funeral home business, while my dad serves as a supervisor for Duke Energy. However, I thought it would be interesting to interview someone that I relate to as a college student with no idea of what direction they will follow. Although I am not particularly interested in the pressure washing business I was very astonished with what Wesley had to say about his business. Before interviewing Wesley there was one particular characteristic that

Moreover, budgeting was a big part of his plan because he was a college student so he did not have a lot of money to spend on equipment. He borrowed his first pressure washer machine from a family member but spent the money he earned after the first two weeks on a semi professional grade machine. Roughly a year later he upgraded to his newest equipment that enables him to do more jobs efficiently and effectively. He pressure washes the storage building where his equipment is stored for free and in return they allow him to store his equipment without paying any rent. His goal was to avoid debt and he did this by not borrowing money from a bank or even from family. Management involves decision making which is what he had to do in order to start a successful business. He could have kept using the equipment that was not as professional, but his effectiveness would have gone down. With Wesley being new to the pressure washing business he also had to advertise to get his name out. Starting out he did door to door sales and even flyers in mailboxes. Originally, he spent the majority of his time looking for jobs because he only had the basics. His website was new and he was simply just a college student. He now has a website that allows consumers to book him immediately and see reviews. This keeps him organized and allows people easy access to getting in contact with him. Nonetheless, Wesley is young and this
The equipment is also out of the price range for most college students. Students would be looking at spending around $3788 for the kind of lab equipment used at DeVry. By creating an inexpensive and portable oscilloscope, function generator, and power supply that fits in one box about the size of a brief case we've addressed the primary issues associated with this equipment.
I conducted my informational interview on September 20, 2017 with an Ohio University graduate, Christopher Nason. Mr. Nason graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He currently is a member of a reverse engineering team at the Defense Logistics Agency which is part of the Federal Government Department of Defense. The company provides replacement parts and equipment for the United States’ Armed Forces. Chris’s job involves analyzing designs or schematics of older parts still used by the military. Since this piece may no longer be manufactured commercially, Chris’s team analyzes the data in order to identify the items so that they can be reproduced internally. His position involve a lot of research and project management.
The general topic of my PIP is the younger generation’s (specifically Gen Y and Z - the digital natives) inherent captivation with social media and the moral and social quandary this poses. The benefit of social media is ambiguous to say the least; does it serve as a tool to better network with the world around you? Or are its effects much more negative in nature? Accordingly, my hypothesis in relation to my topic is that “Social media isolates individuals (with focus given to the digital natives) by negatively socialising them with subpar social abilities”. I aim to achieve a concrete conclusion on whether or not my hypothesis is accurate, and how and why the networking
For my first interview, I chose to analyze my grandfather (William McGlone) and his personal work histories. At age 84, he had quite an extensive work life. After graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1956 with a B.A. in Communications, he began his job search with a strong focus on advertising.
For this journal, I will reflect on the three interviews and highlight the answers from each. Let’s take a look.
For Claudia Cifolelli’s Senior Project, she provided service for the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya, Africa. This organization provides a safe haven for injured and orphaned elephants that have been victims of the illegal ivory poaching throughout Kenya. In order to help raise money to fund this organization, Claudia organized a silent auction containing art pieces related to wildlife made by students and alumni from Natomas Charter School and other local artists. The money she made went to the Medical needs of the Elephants in Kenya.
As a meticulous businessman he utilized money saving techniques to effectively and efficiently lower costs and maximize profit.
This semester-long project helped me understand and interpret similarities and differences among and between individuals, cultures, or societies across space and time by having me go face to face with the individuals, with the cultures or societies, over a great period of time in my community. I was exposed to people of different cultures and saw how they could have similar opinions of the same subject. I also saw how people of the same culture had different opinions. I can tell by age how much today’s generation tends to have certain beliefs than those of a different generation. These experiences I would not have been able to gain while sitting in a classroom being lectured. Although I do enjoy it very much.
The company should accept this project. The project payback period is between 2 to 3 years.
The person I decided to interview for this assignment was Dominick Wade. He is a manager of a lock shop and preventative maintenance company called The Siegel group. It is a contracting company that is located in Fort Hood, Texas. What this particular company does is preventative maintenance on the electronic door locks on all of the barracks on Fort Hood. Which also includes changing the batteries, card readers, mortises, computers inside the locks, and replace missing screws in the door locks. After conducting this interview, I gained some knowledge and understanding about the maintenance industry. It also gave me a greater appreciation for what maintenance workers do.
Currently a student at the University of Dubuque pursuing a Major in Business and Marketing and a Minor in Communications and Human Resource. I am currently employed at Heartland Financial as a Customer Care Representative. I am consistently exceeding company objectives to secure customer satisfaction and loyalty. I am a self-motivated individual with 4 years of retail banking and customer service experience. Adept at prioritizing and completing tasks to meet customer’s needs. One of my greatest passions is helping others and making a difference. When I am involved with a project at work or school I always want to do my best to achieve success.
I also learned that interviewing can be a powerful tool. It is imperative to include as many perspectives as possible in order to successfully change an organization. These interviews provide individual insight as to the current state of the establishment, as well as provides many possible solutions to common problems. Through interviewing we were able to note common trends in information to provide a more complete solution to the overall problem.
The community service project I am most proud of is my senior project. I planned and ran a youth baseball clinic. I am most proud of this because I had a chance to work with kids who reminded me of my younger self. It was great to reconnect with why I love the game of baseball while helping someone younger with their baseball skills. Another program I’ve been involved in is the Ashland Football programs, Rent-A-Player program. Rent-A-Player is a service for people who live in Ashland that need help doing miscellaneous jobs. I was hired a handful of times, and it connected me with many Ashland residents. I have also been involved with many other community service opportunities. Throughout my last four years this has helped me connect with
As an intern in Design Hotels, I have gained experience that will enable me to develop a strong career in the future. The main problem that I face is the lack of well-structured Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and my major concern is the lack of necessary guidelines for my role in the office. For instance, I am supposed to be an intern in the department of Sales & Business Development. However, I am also responsible to act as the personal assistant to Area Director, Public Relations, and Revenue Management intern. This leaves me confused about my job description forcing me to work under extreme pressure, and limited time to meet the strict deadline for several tasks ongoing concurrently. As a result, there is reduced performance following role conflict and time constraints. This is an internal problem and is staff-based, and so it needs undivided attention of the management to address it accordingly. Therefore, my problem that I intend to address in my assignment relate to several competencies such as communication, collaboration, and leadership.
