The author of American history, uses many colors to symbolize things in the story. In this story, it uses colors such as gray, green, and flower colors (red, yellow, purple,) to symbolize the emotions throughout the story. Colors may not have too much meaning at first Justin glance, but if you go back and read it over, you may be able to pick up on something that you didn’t he first time.

The colors in this piece are instrumental in moving the eye across the piece and drawing attention to specific parts of the piece. For instance, for the most part, the colors that are used are dark. However, to emphasize General Wolfe, the focal point in the middle, his outfit is painted in a brighter red and yellow and the ground beneath him is light as well. Also, in order to allow the eye to glide across the painting almost all of the soldier’s uniforms are red, creating rhythm. One solider, who is apparently rushing into see Wolfe, is painted in green, which is the complimentary color to red. The use of complimentary colors brings the eyes attention to the panicked solider, emphasizing the overall sense of urgency in the piece. The piece is also well balanced and uses appropriate scales and proportions.

The color "red" is most present when describing people and objects. One of the most obvious examples is the Ibis, colored in a shade of red, scarlet. Then, the tree the Ibis was in was called a "bleeding tree", which therein relates to red. Another would be when Doodle is under the bush. "Finally I went back and found him huddled beneath a red nightshade bush beside the road."(564) One of the other most obvious ones is when Brother lifts Doodle's head when he finds him under the bush. "He had been bleeding from the mouth, and his neck and the front of his shirt were stained a brilliant red."(564) The symbolism was shown through the entirety of the story as James Hurst brings beauty to the color red.

Throughout history, colors have been used to symbolize different meanings based on associations with culture, history, politics, and religion. In The Scarlet Letter, the author, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses symbolism through colors such as red, black and white in the form of sunlight, to represent emotions and ideologies of Hester and the people around her.

The color red is used in literature as well as throughout The Book Thief to display war, blood, and anger (Morton). Early in the novel, Death associates red with war, “The last time I saw her was red… Then bombs” (Zusak 12), Death uses the

Edith Wharton's novel Ethan Frome the color red is associated with one of the main characters, Mattie Silver to illustrate the love between her and her cousin's husband, Ethan Frome. Wharton uses this particular color throughout the story to symbolize the forbidden passion between the two.

In literature, red is often associated with blood and violence. Four researchers, Erella Hovers, Shimon Ilani, Ofer Bar-Yosef, and Bernard Vandermeersch, studied colored symbolism and concluded; “Color symbolism is one of the symbolic frameworks used extensively by contemporary societies to convey information and abstract messages through material objects” (Hovers et al.,2003.) Through the use of colors, May vividly expresses the emotions of the speaker towards society, regarding the topics of warfare and education. He specifically selects certain colors, like black and red, to stir up emotions within Jontae. The colors create a symbolic image, ultimately leading up to represent the violent scenes taking place. May writes his fear; “I know how often red is the only color left to reach” (18-19), to show his apprehension for Jontae a young male in society surrounded by warfare. Red in literature often represents blood, sacrifice, and violence. Using colors throughout the poem, creates a more vehement atmosphere, in which Jontae is left to choose between warfare, and discovering his identity in an alternative

Effective use of color is used in every aspect of life, possessing the domination to create mood, tone, and atmosphere. The color red is generally associated with love and happiness. The author of Ethan Frome, Edith Wharton, takes a twist on this concept, by using one of the main characters, Mattie Silver, as a compliment of red. Mattie Silver is often associated with the color silver, bringing forth images of light and warmth against Ethan 's dark life. The use of red in Ethan Frome is depicted by Wharton in comparing bleakness to light, in love and affection, and in forbidden passion.

Black, white, and red are the most important colors in, The Book Thief. I believe that one theme that is repeated shown are these three colors. They are used to visualize different scenarios in the eyes of Death. They help him have a vacation from all the mayhem of murders and work of taking people’s soul. Red, symbolizes the scenario of murder and destruction. White, on the other hand, symbolizes innocence and black, the final color, symbolizes the sadness and mourning.

The main character among others in The Red Badge of Courage would have to be Henry, or the youth, as he is nicknamed in the book. Henry changes drastically throughout the plot, going from a scared coward to a heroic man. This is shown in the lines, “The youth ran like a mad man to reach the woods before a bullet a bullet could discover him.” Along with the line, “He too, threw down his gun and fled. There was no shame in his face. He ran like a rabbit.” These lines show Henry’s fearfulness by running from conflict when he was in battle with his regiment. It is not until the end when Henry becomes a hero to all. This is shown in the line, “He felt a quiet manhood nonassertive but of sturdy and strong blood. He knew that he would no more quail before his guides whenever they should point.” This quote describes Henry finding his courage and that he is no longer a coward.

The red also represents the confederate flag for the Civil War. Phoenix wearing the red flag shows how the south always had a hold on the slaves. When thinking of the words dark and striped, most are reminded of prisoners in a jail cell, which is just what the slaves were in the 1700’s and 1800s, prisoners to the white. The dark striped dress Phoenix was wearing represents a black and white jail cell uniform for prisoners. Welty used the main character, Phoenix, to be her representation of slaves and blacks. With a character like Phoenix, many get a grasp on what blacks really have gone through and what they still may be going through now.

In “A Red Dress 1946”, a short story by Alice Munro, uses the significance of color imagery throughout the story. The color red represents nonconformity, standing out or being unique This is because of the narrator’s unwillingness to be a unique girl. However, the color blue represents conformity, being able to blend in with society, and the ability to be like everyone else due to the narrator’s lack of courage to be unique and to be herself. Both of these colors point out different aspects of the narrator's inner self and show how much she desires to hide her unique red self and appear blue. Color imagery is used throughout the short story, “A Red Dress 1946” in order for the author to demonstrate the inner thoughts of the narrator.

People tend to be greatly influenced by stories, news, and other contemporary sources of knowledge, which ultimately affects the impact they have on the world. Stephen Crane was greatly impacted by the time period in which he lived. One such influence was the popular literary style of Realism. Realism is the trend in which literature is based on the true nature of everyday occurrences devoid of any fantasy or romance. It is the raw depiction of what life and society is actually like. This literary style can be found in many of Stephen Crane’s novels. Religion also had a significant impact on the way Stephen Crane wrote his novels. He was an atheist which brought about the idea that humans are just part of nature and must solve their own problems without the intervention of a higher being. This notion is evident with the protagonist of The Red Badge of Courage. Henry Fleming, a young union soldier in the Civil War, must overcome the fear of putting his life at risk to achieve what he wants most which is honor. Honor comes from actively participating in battle and sacrificing his life for the cause. Honor is physically represented from a wound noted as the “Red Badge”. In the end Henry doesn’t consult in a higher being and achieves what he wants most by overcoming the mental obstacles and ultimately finding the strength within to realize what courage actually is. Accompanied by the literary movements and his religion, his time period was heavily influenced by the
