Growing up in New York City has been a wonderful experience. It’s made me realize the rich and engaging city Columbia is located in. While I do want to study in a lively area, I want to go to a University that provides me the best education and resources I could have. Majority of the faculty teaching at the college has been tremendously recognized within their respective fields, what better than to be guided by those very professionals. Learning organic chemistry under the tutorship of the likes of James Leighton, who has made incredible advances in the synthesis and application of polyketides as anticancer chemotherapeutic agents, or 19th-century American literature Professor Susan Bernofsky would be unimaginable. Another attractive consideration for me as an applicant is the Borrow Direct Plus On-Site Borrowing Program offered with the Butler Library student membership, in which students are able to borrow books …show more content…
Reading the journal of Rosalind Franklin, the discoverer of DNA, would be difficult because there are so few copies, but this program can get it for me, and connect me to new thought processes and ideas. I believe that Columbia’s mission to refine its students’ analytic and imaginative thinking is inspiring and will overall be beneficial to my education. The university is able to follow their mission statement not only through its diligent faculty, but its constant technological innovation and advancement. In the near future, the chemistry department will have its very own biology autoclave and cold room, which allow students to conduct industrial processes requiring elevated temperature and pressure levels. The culmination of Columbia’s resources and faculty is through the SURF and Amgen Scholars Program, in which the Department of Biological Science enables undergraduates to conduct hands on laboratory research. I can already see my future at Columbia
SNC briefed an incorrect objective and enemy location in his Orientation and Situation paragraphs. SNC's tasking statements did not indicate that SNC had thought ahead to possible obstacles during execution. SNC did not establish security while briefing his five paragraph order. SNC took over half of his time briefing his five paragraph order, and did not leave himself enough time to accomplish his mission within the allotted period. SNC allowed his navigator to stop to check their azimuth too often for such a short movement. SNC executed his plan and made a reasonable formation change prior to contact with the enemy based off the distance his team had traveled. SNC delivered a decent ADDRAC Report but failed to communicate or control his team
San Diego State is a public university and provides top education. It is one of the 23 campuses of the California State University System and has its own branch campus in the Imperial Valley. Their acceptance rates are 34.5% therefore a majority of applicants will not be accepted because they might not have the right GPA or they may not have enough extracurricular activities. They have an outstanding soccer team that has been doing very well this season. It’s also on the beautiful coast of San Diego. They have such a beautiful campus with wonderful people. They are also right next to the beach so you have that wonderful sea smell everyday. San Diego defines its missions as “ to provide a well- balanced, high quality education for undergraduate and graduate students and to contribute to knowledge in the solution of problems are excellent distinction in teaching, research, and service.”

The Target Corporation’s mission statement is to make their company the most sought after shopping destination by delivering a great guest experience with the most innovated technologies and quality merchandise. Target is the second largest general merchandise retailer in America. Target was founded by George Draper Dayton, in 1902, with the name Goodfellow Dry Goods. In 1903, Mr. Dayton changed the name to The Dayton Compay. Furthermore, the first Target store opened in 1962 in the Minneapolis, Minnesota which became the main headquarters. It grew to be the largest division of the Dayton-Hudson Corporation and was subsequently renamed the Target Corporation in 2000. Target anticipates staying ahead by challenging the company to be the most efficient and intellectual upscale company in the retail industry (Target Corporation, 2016).
The department of human resources at UC Davis have a mission they hope to achieve. Their mission is to connect with the outside community but how? Well on their website http://www.hr.ucdavis.edu/about/index.html the information says they offer a program to the community to get people involved in HR under the subtitle “Mission’’. Than they state on their website they want to ‘‘inspire all people’’ but in their mission statement they earn satisfaction through others basically in order for them to succeed they must Keep earning support so they can inspire the world around them so it balances out in a sense. Their website reflects their mission statement just not with the same wording. On the website they say they “promote excellence’’ ,but
The discovery of deoxyribonucleic acid, more commonly known as DNA, has been the foundation for much scientific work. This fundamental discovery was credited to James Watson and Francis Crick. Many people believe that another person, Rosalind Franklin, also played a large role in the research. How much did she contribute to the discovery? Why is her name left unrecognized? This paper will discuss her part in the search and whether her name should appear next to Watson's and Crick's as the co-discoverer of DNA.
Professionally my hope is to become a lawyer and Syracuse is one of the few universities that offers prelaw studies. In attending Syracuse I would be well prepared to further my education successfully when attending law school. In a more figurative sense; I want to be someone my parents are proud of, who is well-rounded and set to embark on the journey of this world and create change to make the world a better place to endure. I have lived In San Francisco all my life and I would say that is an immense privilege to be around so much diversity. New York is similar in terms of the big city lifestyle but there are so many differences that I want to experience. I would hope that being in a new environment will teach me what is like everyday in the real world, and needing to adjust to
I would like to conduct my graduate studies at UNC-Chapel Hill for three main reasons, the prestige of the school, the environment it provides, and the chemistry faculty. The prestige is obvious, with a chemistry program ranked number 15 by the U.S. news as well as being among the top U.S. public universities in research support. The prestige of the school is more than just numbers as the first public university in the nation, it has a history of preparing students for success. It is that long history of teaching and research that I would like to be a part of.
Getting the most out of college is a theme present in both the values of Jesuit education as articulated in the Gonzaga Mission Statement and Ken Bain’s “What the Best College Students Do”. This idea is presented in the overarching goal of Gonzaga University to “intentionally develop the whole person -- intellectually, spiritually, physically, and emotionally”. Gonzaga emphasizes the importance of the core curriculum in order to fulfill this goal and to educate students so that when they leave the university, they will be prepared not only to enter the workforce, but also to live a fulfilling life. This is seen in the requirements of the core curriculum, in which all students must take a variety of courses in order to become holistically educated.
Rosalind Franklin, a name mostly forgotten in textbooks, majorly contributed to the discovery of DNA’s helical structure. Unfortunately for her, her contribution was made during a time when feelings of misogyny and antisemitism were prevalent. As a result, she never received the recognition she deserved from her male competitors. Photographs that she had taken and reports that she had written were unknowingly given to rival scientists, Francis Watson and James Crick, Photograph 51 being the most prominent among them. This led them to determining DNA’s structure and acquiring international fame. Had her information not been leaked, Rosalind would’ve had a very good chance of discovering it first. Franklin changed the world of science with Photograph
Barnard College encourages women to destroy gender roles by flourishing in a scholastic institution that was previously not offered to us. Barnard is a family composed of intellectual and free-spirited sisters, and through this supportive sisterhood, we pursue our dreams and aspirations together. Because of Barnard’s partnership with Columbia, Barnard women have access to all of Columbia’s resources, and vice-versa. The access to the research opportunities at Columbia like the Biological Science undergraduate research is also access to its acclaimed professors. For a Biology major such as I, the opportunity to shadow a scientist leading in real experimentation and research in fields like Anatomy and Cell and Biology, as well as learning from
“The story of how DNA structure was discovered is not only one the most important tales in the history of science, it is also the root of a great controversy that will live on for many years”. On this note, I, Rosalind Franklin, deserve more credit for the discovery of DNA than I have been given. There are three main reasons of why I should receive more credit: one being that I was robbed for my work without receiving any appreciation in return. First, I produced x-ray photographs of DNA that indicated it was the shape of a double helix roughly in the form of a spiral staircase. As Aaron Klug, my colleague, once said about me, “Her photographs are among the most beautiful of any substances ever taken”. No only this but, I came up with the
Our Roadmap starts with our mission, which is enduring. It declares our purpose as a company and serves as the standard against which we weigh our actions and decisions.
Rosalind Franklin’s work on DNA was crucial in discovering the composition of the human body as a whole. Her x-ray photo revealed a double helix structure and she also discovered the A and B form of DNA. She worked through the adversity of being a female in a predominately male dominated realm and made remarkable findings that were eventually stolen. She adapted to a new lab with antiquated technology. Before this discovery, the structure of DNA was thought to be simple. Scientist, Watson and Crick, started with the wrong structure of DNA from a misinterpretation of notes from one of Franklin’s presentations. Unlike Watson and Crick, Rosalind Franklin could explain DNA and how it worked.
My AP Biology and AP Chemistry classes ignited an intense scientific curiosity that drove me to create an internship at Yale University’s Flavell Lab this past summer. The lab 's researchers work with transgenic mice to study immunity, hoping to trigger responses that fight cancerous cells. Their work is every bit as exhilarating as I could have hoped. The experience of seeing actual applications of techniques like western blotting and flow cytometry brought about the revelation that I could use my mathematical and scientific talents to solve problems that exist outside of textbooks. This realization created an insatiable yearning to eliminate real world problems which far outweigh those of my multivariable calculus textbook in both number and importance. My academic achievements and experience at the Flavell Lab will help me be able to cross off items on my problem hit list.
