As communicative competence becomes a more focused goal for classrooms across the U.S., student progress in developing higher levels of proficiency becomes increasingly important. In order to prepare students adequately for the work force as well as post-secondary education, students need a long sequence of well-articulated language learning that begins in elementary school. If students are expected to be ready to use their languages for professional purposes upon entering the work force, they need to leave the K-12 educational system with an Advanced level of proficiency and the post-secondary world at the Superior level. Meeting these levels of proficiency requires that students begin early and continue in an extended sequence of language
Compare and contrast BICS and CALP. Name one point that you think teachers should know about second language acquisition.
When an educator walks into her classroom for the first time, she needs to be prepared to encounter students that come from a variety of backgrounds. The children will be in different stages of language development, and the educator must accommodate for each of these students. Magruder, Hayslip, Espinosa, and Matera (2013) state, “The US Census Bureau projects that by the 2030s, children whose home language is other than English will increase from roughly 22 percent to 40 percent of the school-age population” (p. 9). This increase in second language learners will cause the educator to accommodate for those needs. Second language learners “need teachers who welcome them and recognize their unique abilities, what they know, and what they need to learn” (Magruder, Hayslip, Espinosa, and Matera, 2013, p. 10).
We learn primarily through language, and use language to express our understanding. In order for English learners to have access to core content, they need academic language and literacy skills (Echevarria, Vogt and Short). Academic language is used to succeed in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Often English learner students enter school with limited to no exposure to academic language. These students are from homes in which English is rarely spoken. They are bright students who would excel in classrooms whose academic language was the same as their native language. The task No Child Left Behind has given to researchers and teachers is to educate the increased number of immigrants in English speaking classes. It is important to realize that there are approximately 180 native languages among the student body population. Spanish by far surpasses other language groups.
In general I did not consider myself to be a particularly competent communicator, it wasn’t so much that I thought of myself as completely incompetent however if I were going to guess prior to comparing my Communication Competence Scale score with the score my roommate gave me I would’ve ranked myself solidly middle of the pack. In fact, upon reviewing my own scores I found myself to be just a few points above the absolute mean of CCS scores. My own score for my competence level really did not surprise me much, I have long thought of myself as an okay communicator who manages to avoid major social conflicts but never made much of an impression upon those I interacted with. Comparing my score to my roommates I discovered that we had slightly different perceptions of both the effectiveness of my communication skills and the areas of communication where I could most use improvement.
I want to be good at communicating. I learned that no one is born a competent communicator because to communicating competently requires skills that we have to learn and practice. I always thought that I can’t ever be a good communicator because the communication trails in my family is weak. We are shy and are not sociable. It is a good thing that “no matter which traits we’re born with, we still have to know how to communicate competently.” The book define communication competent as to communicating in ways that are effective and appropriate for a given situation. Communicating effectively is to use behaviors that achieve your communication goals. Communicating appropriately is to use behaviors that apply in a social situation. In other word,
When I started to look at more detailed information about the Devil I focused on aspects such as its cancer and its distribution because I already had the knowledge of conservation I could go straight into the more detailed aspects and understand and analyse it. This helped to develop my skills even further specifically my knowledge skills.
Interpersonal Skill Set for Minister is an amazing book full of great wisdom. The book contains many strengths that make it a must read for every minister. The first strength is found within the opening chapters of the book. Social media and technology is a blessing that can do great things for the church, but often times it is seen as an enemy. Many churches and ministers are out of date in the department of technology. Being out of date in this category is not completely bad, but there are many great benefits from technology that these churches are missing out on. This book does a great job at giving these strengths and encouraging ministers to take advantage of the benefits technology.
After coming to the US, the lack of opportunities to communicate with native English speakers hinders many international students from establishing a meaningful relationship with native English speakers (Bertram et al., 2014; Kim & Egan, 2011; Zhai, 2004). The language barrier not only impedes their ability to communicate with their American peers and teachers, and also crushes their confidence and self-esteem when they find that their earlier training in English language and achievements in TOEFL/GRE do not help them to resolve practical issues that arise in a classroom environment (Baba and Hosoda, 2014; Kim & Egan, 2011; Wang, 2012). Although most graduates may have encountered the vocabulary of their specialty, they may be still baffled by the
To succeed as a Solicitor it is vital to be an excellent communicator in order to work effectively with clients and colleagues. I have demonstrated my superb communication skills through previous roles such as being vice-president for Curie house and at Mercedes-Benz where I train new starters. My interpersonal skills have come from being employed in a diverse range of roles since the age of 17 where I have had to successfully engage with clients both verbally and in writing.
Language is a key part of any family, community, culture and the human race. Without language the world today would be much different. From cavemen, to the Egyptian use of hieroglyphics, to Old English, to more than 6,500 languages spoken around the world today, the advances that humans have made in language is remarkable and inspiring. The ability to speak, read, write and understand more than one language is also remarkable and expands the liberties in life, especially for young people. High school students should be required to take at least two years of a foreign language class in order to graduate, as many recent studies support the benefits of doing so. Students who have learned a foreign language in high school have proven to have a

Accepting language and communication as the heart of human experience in the academe, all students will develop a level of proficiency in at least one other language. To succeed, all students must study language and culture in an integrated fashion in order to use the language with appropriate meaning and correct interpretation. (Kitis 2004), for purposes of global relevance, many students come to college looking for classes that will help them build successful and interesting careers as teachers, business people, communicators, scientists, and some others. It is their conviction that they can grow intellectually, can change the world, or can change themselves when they are successful in learning other languages and cultures..
In foreign language education and assessment, pragmatic competence has been known as an essential component of communicative language ability (Canale and Swain 1980; Bachman 1990). Although the fact that many models of communicative language ability included pragmatic competence since the 1980s (Bachman 1990; Canale and Swain 1980; Savignon 1983), but Röver (2005) and McNamara plus Röver (2006) point out that pragmatic competence assessment is still in its infancy. This paper is an attempt to present a literature review of pragmatic competence assessment. At first, a preliminary aspect of assessing pragmatic competence are presented. Second, the researcher provides a research-based review of pragmatic competence assessment. Third, the biggest part of the paper has been given to the approaches and strategies of assessing pragmatic competence that can be used and applied by researchers. Finally, hints about how to conduct an assessment as well as the rating process are reported in order to help teachers to assess this important component of the language.
International relationship is the nature of interaction, which occurs between two or more people. ‘Interpersonal skills reflect our ability to interact effectively with other people.
