Community policing is the relationship and co-operation between law enforcement and the people of the community. The idea behind it is that law enforcement’s performance can be improved in the areas of crime control and order maintenance with the help of the public; through reaching out to the community and information sharing, law enforcement can establish a mutual understanding. The San Diego Police Department conducted several significant research studies during the 1970’s…including a community-oriented policing (COP) project, which was the first empirical study of community policing. The COP project required patrol officers to become knowledgeable about their beats through “beat-profiling” activities, in which officers studied the topographics, demographics, and call histories of their beats. The project demonstrated that interaction with the community could improve the attitudes of officers toward their jobs and toward the communities they served and could encourage the officers to develop creative solutions to complex problems. Community Policing is made up of two core components: problem solving and community partnership. Community Partnership is developed through positive relationship with the community, community involvement, and sharing of resources with members of the community to address the most urgent concerns.
