Coming from a non-agricultural background, my lifelong dream of becoming a veterinarian has always been a bit harder for me to achieve than for others. However, that has not stopped me from making big leaps to success. Volunteer work and community service have always been of great interest to me. Being able to combine that with agriculture is absolutely thrilling. Within the past four years, I have participated in several community service and volunteer work and activities. During my freshman year, I volunteered to work in the petting zoo and with pony rides at the gibson county fair. I helped hand out feed to kids and showed them all the different species of animals. With the pony rides, we helped children on and off of ponies, who were unable to do so themselves. This is an important part of agriculture. Ponies and petting zoos provide significant income for breeders and farms. My sophomore year I became more involved in FFA. Over the course of the year, …show more content…
During the fall, we held a canned food drive. Canned food can be related back to farmers. They grow the food we eat, whether it be canned or from a market. In the spring, we provided the City of Dyer with plants and flowers grown in the greenhouse. Without flowers we wouldn't have bees. Many crops require pollination to help fertilize fruits and vegetables. Furthermore, my senior year I volunteered at a veterinarian office where I was able to job shadow. This was detrimental for my future career. The real experience is something you can't get in most high school classrooms. The vet not only works with dogs and cats but also deals with cows, horses, goats, and other farm animals. Horses can not only be used in the livestock industry for training and competitions but can be used to herd other livestock. Cows, goats, and sheep provide the industry with meat and wool. Agricultural volunteer and community work helps the industry
Throughout the past few years, I have contemplated back and forth constantly of what it is I might want to be when I graduate from high school and college. At first I thought maybe a lawyer, but I soon realized that I am not the type of person to argue against others. Maybe I could be a doctor, but too many people are in that profession or want to be in that profession as it is. After a while of long, hard thinking, I decided that I would apply my love of animals to my future career path, therefor I decided that I wanted to be a Veterinarian. A Veterinarian is a person, much like a doctor, who cares for ill or injured animals. Examples of some of the duties Veterinarians do are dress wounds, perform surgery, diagnose diseases, and even
As a recent graduate of the Johns Hopkins University and a new Research Technician at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, becoming more familiar with different healthcare settings and helping others in doing so have always been of my interest. From my experience of volunteering as a piano teacher for inner-city children in Baltimore, I have learnt that even a small commitment and emotional support can make a big difference in the daily lives and the happiness of those in need. I have briefly familiarized myself to the hospital environment by shadowing physicians and conducting biomedical research but have yet to translate my volunteering experiences and the lessons learnt from them to the healthcare setting. I am a friendly, optimistic,
I decided to start volunteering at the local humane society because I’ve always been really passionate about animals and wanted to start benefiting them in the community. Prior to my service I was delighted because I’ve wanted to start volunteering for years and was glad the opportunity had presented itself. Throughout my experience I learned a great deal and met a lot of new people. Even though I’ve only just started serving my time at the Fox Valley Humane Association I can truly see the difference it has made in the community.
Growing up, my parents instilled the value of service in me. For this reason, I pursued a degree in Education in order to serve my community with the best skillset. However, it was until serving as an AmeriCorps member that I developed a more critical lens to what public service means. Before my term of service, I thought serving was just a matter of showing up and completing a task. While this is partially true, I learned that in order to maximize change, it is important to involve who we are serving. At times, we focus more on quantity rather than quality and end up doing a disservice to communities who need the most help. I want to serve with The Peace Corps to facilitate change and to empower communities through education.
I love animals and I would love to work with them. Ever since I was a little girl I knew I would want to work with animals because they interested me so much. Becoming a veterinarian isn’t just about playing with dogs and cats all day; you are actually in charge of taking care of them and this is a no messing around job. You are responsible for whatever happens to that dog or any other animal. It’s a tough and serious job but I’m up for the challenge because it’s what I want to do for the rest of my
Better preparing for a career in veterinary medicine will include volunteering and learning everything that is provided about
I do not have any experience in health care or veterinary medicine. A hobby that I feel like helped me gain skills that could easily transfer over to helping animals would have to be helping out at my local elementary school with the young children. Children and animals are alike in that they make noise when they want something, love attention, and enjoy being praised when they have done something good. They are different in the fact that children can verbalize with words what they want while animals can only make sounds to try and show you what they want. I have personally first hand seen how much joy and happiness animals can bring to society as the local elementary school has had dogs come in and listen to the students read to them causing the students to not feel any pressure or worry. I heard about Black Hawk College’s Veterinary Sciences program through Black Hawk’s website and word of mouth. Just knowing the basics about taking care of animals and children can really help me succeed. By completing this course, I hope to gain a deeper insight into Veterinary Medicine and helping animals thrive as best as I
While I may not have completed much community service, I act out of genuine passion and self-interest rather than anything else. I see little reason to volunteer for a group or cause I have no interest in. However, I do enjoy helping others in subjects I quite enjoy like computer science and programming. The Harrington Park School STEM Camp gave me an opportunity to teach elementary school children about programming, an opportunity I would take again and will take again this winter. Tutoring volunteer work under the
The most profound reason I want to be a veterinary technician is the people. Each animal and pet has an owner—a person that treats them like a son or daughter and I strive to make sure they know their pet is in the best hands and follow up on my promise to do so. I have met people that have this same ideology and it strengthens this profession to put the patient and client’s well-being above anything else. I’ve seen and experienced missed lunch breaks, staying an hour after close, coming in early, even hours without bathroom breaks—and I love
When I was five, I said to my mom, “ I want to be a veterinarian when I grow up”, a phrase that every parent hears their child say at some point in their life, knowing that it is only a temporary phase. However, my determination to become a veterinarian has only increased with age and added experience in the veterinary medical field. It is assumed that I want to be a veterinary simply because I love animals and that is not false. But being a good veterinary to me means so much more. Being a good veterinarian is knowing how to accommodate and relate to the owners needs as well as the animals, its knowing how to put physical symptoms and diagnostic test results together to effectively treat the patient, and its knowing that that with every success
Throughout High School, I led multiple philanthropic projects. As president of the Ignite Organization, I involved students to raise funds for, and volunteer at a pregnancy center. I assembled a team of volunteers, and initiated fundraisers. This effort transpired over a year and continues to affect my community. I also developed a supply-drive to assist Hurricane Sandy victims through benefit events. Furthermore, I volunteered at summer camps as well as at my Parish as a counselor.
In the United States today there are fewer animal-lovers today than there used to be. There are a lot of animals in the world, and there are not enough to take care of them all. Although this career may not be awesome, easy or even ecstatic. I on the other hand however believe its challenging, being a vet can be the sweetest job ever chosen.
A veterinary career is not a goal easily met, nor quickly met; but I know few people can say they love what they do, and the hurdles I will have to face are worth getting to be one of those people. Veterinarians come into work everyday, whether that be a clinic, farm, or lab, treating and diagnosing medical conditions in animals. Depending on the type of veterinarian, this can range from household pets to exotic or endangered species. This is something I have imagined working towards since I was able to comprehend what a career was, and I have only gotten more determined. However, there are several aspects I could have not been aware of; through research, I have gained a better understanding of this career and the tedious road to achieving it, as well as the rewards; and there still is not anything I would rather pursue.
amazing it is. Some people may think volunteering is just a resume builder, but I really believe it provides an opportunity to really get to know a desired profession and learn to love it even more.
I am a Muslim Palestinian-American. My parents are Palestinian refugees who came to the United States to secure a future for me. I have been granted access to education, a secure home, and a future because I was fortunate enough to be born in the United States. Knowing that I could have lived a life where my rights would have been stripped from me, I feel that it is my responsibility to devote my life towards helping people who are oppressed whether they are in the United States or abroad.
