The movie ‘‘Pleasantville’’, written, produced and directed by Gary Ross, approaches a period in America’s history which subsequent generations idealise as a better and more stable society. He portrays this time period of the 1950s as a time when people and life were less complicated; a time when everyone knew their place in society. However, as the film ironically shows, this was a time when people were more ignorant, racist and most certainly sexist. Ross demolishes this illusion of the great 1950s American society by showing how its defects are gradually changed from black and white to colour. Ross shows that ‘change is inevitable’ once a catalyst for change is added to the ordered life of “Pleasantville”. Once David and Mary-Sue begin
Deej Logan was just like any normal high school girl. She woke up on her first day of school and combed her hair, picked out the “perfect” outfit and headed out the door. What she didn’t know is that after that day nothing would be the same. Nothing that day seemed to be going right. At school drama was swarming all around her, not exactly what she hoped the first day would be like. By the time the last bell of the day rang she was more than happy to get out of that school. She drove home as quickly as she could but as soon as she got home she realized that she had forgotten to pick up her sisters. “Great.” She thought sarcastically as she sat back down in her car and drove off. Just then she pulled out her phone to message one of her friends about her awful day. That one decision changed everything. Before she had a chance to send the message Deej veered off into oncoming traffic and was killed on impact.

The fog was like tracing paper over her eyes. From what she could see above, the blue sky was turning navy. Lily was standing at a bus stop wishing she was wearing gloves and a hat. She pulled her coat ever tighter around herself. Her lips were numb, her jaw fighting to chatter. The bus was late and she was meant to be meeting her friend Daisy on it. Daisy, when approached with the idea of travelling via public transport to the unpronounceable French café she desperately wanted to go to, seemed disgusted at the very notion. Lily reminded her that not everyone could rely on their Daddy buying them a new car as soon as they turned seventeen and that it certainly wasn't her fault if it was made unavailable due to an MOT. Daisy blushed prettily.
I sighed and looked at the test, and she was telling the truth, I was pregnant. It was entirely impossible, but that is not what scared me. I threw the test away and picked up my phone. I dialed Ashton’s number, thankfully he was awake. “Dals, it’s three am? What do you need?” Ashton’s raspy voice had shook me to tears. “Look, I just need to talk to you alright.” I say and went into the bathroom. “Ashton, I just took a pregnancy test, and it came up positive, I really need brotherly fucking advice right now!” I cry and he was speechless. “Isnt Michael..” He trailed off and I stayed quiet. “It’s michaels, great.” Ashton sighed. Brooklyn had stirred awake and asked him who he was talking too. The line was quiet for a moment till Brooklyn had

The town folk spent much of the day recovering lost property. Everyone felt fortunate to have found their missing belongings. Everyone except Corvida Bratleigh! Rather than being thankful her playhouse was undamaged by the tornado, Corvida was angry that her playhouse was in Nikki Fernandez’s garden! The playhouse was hers, not Nikki’s and she was going to make sure that Nikki did not step one foot in her lovely little house.

The lack of color on the television show Pleasantville describes a lot more than our technological advancements, it artistically captures the lack of free will we once had. Breaking free from their shells of self awareness the people of Pleasantville start to display their true colors so to speak. The distinct changes or unusual new found attitudes stirring up inside pleasantville remind myself of our very own past here in the united states over the last century or so.
It was a cloudy day, a mild 78 degrees and Lezley McSpadden was taking a drag of her cigarette outside of the local grocery store where she was employed. She was midway through her shift when a friend of hers called and said that someone had been shot by Canfield Green Apartments. Maybe it’s only a mother’s instinct to recoil in fear, but in that moment Lezley could think only of her son Michael. Michael had recently graduated three months before and she wasn’t sure of his

In the town of South Lake Tahoe, children played safely outside, the sun always seemed to be shining, and laughter was a common sound. Everyone knew one another and crime ratings were close to zero. Due to the town’s “child-friendly” nature, the Dugard family called this place home (Hawkins). However, on June 10, 1991, a fiery nightmare exploded into reality for eleven year-old Jaycee Dugard.
