Romans have accepted that the technology has been a great invention but whoever made it was low in status or not righteous. Documents 5 through 8 support that the Romans used technology and advanced because of it, but failed to realize those who made it possible. They believed that if you used tools and technology, you were vulgar. Through these documents the point is made that Romans weren’t as fond as the Han when it came to technology. For example, in document 5, an upper class political leader believed that gentlemen couldn’t work with their hands and must make others do it because they will be called vulgar. They used craftsmen and workers to do all the dirty work. Historians agree that the Romans had a very hardcore sense of nationalism and conveyed this through innovations such as aqueducts. Although intelligent people came up with the idea, the low class, vulgar slaves were put to work to build

The Han Dynasty and the Roman Empire were two grand empires that rose out of preexisting territories and provided relative peace over wide areas. The collapse of the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BCE), which was the first great land-based empire in East Asia, came after a period of war, confusion, and tyrannical rule. Due to the political disorder that stemmed from the early dynastic activity, the emergence of the Han Dynasty (206 BCE- 228 CE) sprung to focus on restoring order. On the other hand, the rise of the Roman Empire (44 BCE- 476 CE) originated from consolidating authority over aristocratic landlords and overriding the democratic elements of the earlier Republic. Instead, the Roman Empire redefined the concept of “citizen” as subjects to
Empires on their outside may seem very different and unique. However, when you get down to their fundamentals, you begin to truly realize how similar they are. Just as the imposing pine tree and humble tomato plant may seem vastly different, their start from a lowly seed and craving for water and sunlight to survive unifies them. Such is also true with the Han and Roman empires. While key differences may be present, their social structures, influencing religions, and causes of collapse unify them.

The Han Dynasty viewed technology as essential in various ways. Documents 1 and 2 show how technology is an essential thing and that although it is great, government intervening must take place to assure everything goes to plan. Document 1 mentions some organization and order that’s needed to make sure everything works, and document 2 mentions how the workers are using crude brittle tools and need to get new tools that are in good condition so they can work more efficiently. Both of these documents may have a slight bias considering both of them are written by Han government officials and they might want to get higher positions and this may influence their writings. It was interesting that in document
The Roman’s view of technology is more pessimistic than the Hans. Their attitude shows very little concern to how the common people benefit from the invention of technologies. Especially, Cicero refers the craftsmen as “vulgar” (Doc 2). This shows that they don’t respect any inventions whatsoever because the upper-class Roman does not care about those inventions. As long as they don’t benefit the upper class then they would think it is not necessary for the society. Seneca repeated this saying that the minds of whoever invented hammers or tongs were “not great or elevated” (Doc 5). This explains why the Romans concentrated more on mathematics and science than inventing technologies. Although Plutarch shows more appreciation towards technology than other Romans, stating that the roads were built with great pride. He said, “stones on either side of the road at lesser intervals so that it would be easier for those who had horses to mount them” (Doc 4). This does not show any benefit for the common or
Romans helped build temples, public squares, proper houses, and their national toga was suddenly being seen everywhere. "In their innocent they called this 'civilization', when in fact it was a part of their enslavement" (Tacitus, 15). By carrying over their social norms to other nations, Rome continued to expand in an eased manner, as suggested by Agricola during his reign. Romans were overruling nations that were unnecessary for them to.
The Roman and Han Empires were among the greatest empires in history. The Han prospered in 202 BCE - 220 C.E and the Roman Empire in 27 BCE- 476 C.E. Although there are many similarities in the reasons that contributed to the rise of these empires, there are also several contrasting reasons for their decline. These two empires differ because Rome allowed plague to end their empire while the Han kept ruling.
