When Gatsby reveals to about his relationship with Daisy, Nick’s relationship with Gatsby takes a full u-turn as it rapidly advances their association from simple acquaintances to close friends. Nick’s outlook of Gatsby undergoes a similar transformation. When Nick learns of the previous relationship between Gatsby and Daisy, Gatsby’s actions make sense to Nick. The mansion, the extravagant parties, and the green light were all in the efforts for making Daisy notice him. Gatsby lives his life for the past life that he lived. He spends his life seeking the attention of his love, Daisy, and as Nick explains, “He wanted to recover something, some idea of himself perhaps, that had gone into loving Daisy. His life had been confused and disordered since then, but if he could once return to a certain starting place and go over it all slowly, he could find out what that thing was…” (Fitzgerald 110). In regards to the expression of love , Gatsby and Nick themselves highlight this worldwide concern by expressing feelings about love. “Can’t repeat the past?” he cried incredulously. “Why of course you can” (Fitzgerald 110). Revealing the extent of Gatsby’s commitment to his dreams, he is sure that the past can be repeated. One of his dreams is to be with Daisy and he worked hard to renovate himself just to get her back. “...And for a moment I thought I loved her but I am slow-thinking and full of interior rules that act as brakes on my desires” (Fitzgerald 58). Nick takes things seriously when it comes to being with someone he wants to be with. It is not his intention to flirt with Jordan until he is done with his girl back at home, this shows that Nick is very serious about love.

Jordan says, “He wants to know, if you’ll invite Daisy to your house some afternoon and then let him come over” (78). Gatsby uses Nick to reconnect with Daisy, because he is a mutual friend between the two. Nick is not only connected to the main characters but also has an amicable personality.

The real contradiction to Nick is The Great Gatsby himself, Jay. Jay and Nick share a similar small town upbringing but Jay was able to parle his stolen trades into the corrupted version of the American Dream. Most of what Nick knows about Jay is based on his reputation and it’s not until they actually meet and Nick sees the “quality of distortion” in Jay’s New York lifestyle that Nick sees for himself the illusion that Jay created. On chapter 5, after Nick hearing a backstory on Gatsby, Nick arrives home and Gatsby waits for him to arrive and waits for Nick to give Gatsby an approval for help on being reunited with Daisy. After Nick agrees to Gatsby plans, Gatsby get excited and then in return for Nicks consideration. Later in the chapter, once Daisy and Gatsby are once reunited they get into their own world and forget about Nick. Once Gatsby get what he wants, he forgets all about Nick. Another example would be on page 120, Gatsby asks Nick a favor once again to come have tea with Daisy upon her request, but for what? When Gatsby needed Nick it usually had to do with something serious. Of course it was the day Daisy planned to confess to Tom that Daisy was planning to leave Tom. Later in the book, Gatsby get excited to tell Tom how Daisy never loved Tom. Although Nick have always been third wheel, Gatsby is seen as a very determined man to be reunited with his only love; Daisy. Gatsby figures out ways to be together with his love no matter what.

In The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nick Carraway functions as both the foil and protagonist, as well as the narrator. A young man from Minnesota, Nick travels to the West Egg in New York to learn about the bond business. In a coming of age story, a character must look back on his or her youth and say goodbye. Nick Carraway comes to Long Island as an almost 30 year-old man who prides himself on the fact that he is a non-judgmental person. However, after his experiences he is no longer the same person he was before his 30th birthday. Along with turning 30, Nick’s experiences allow him to see past the illusions of the upper class lifestyle. Initially, Nick was intrigued by the glitz and glamour that accompanied the lives of Tom and Daisy. Slowly but surely, he matures out of his infatuation and comes to several realizations about himself and those around him. Fitzgerald initially presents Nick as a trustworthy character who reserves judgment and is unaffected by others. This first impression provides a meaningful contrast for Nick’s final opinions. After an unforgettable summer, Nick matures into a different person and has several judgments to make towards the people of East and West Egg.

Even though there are clear external differences between Jay Gatsby and George Wilson, there are also similarities between them. First off, both Gatsby and Wilson seek women that are romantically involved with Tom. Even though Wilson is already married to his woman, Gatsby goes on having an affair. They both want acceptance of these women and they both come from a very working-class background. They both want recognition of these women, and they both come from the background of the working class itself. Wilson is working for an honest life trying to stretch every dollar, Gatsby working illegally, regularly throwing away money.

The roaring 20’s was an extrodinary time, and F. Scott Fitzgerald captured the feeling in his book The Great Gatsby. Throughout the book many of the characters showed the importance of the 20’s through their differences and similarities. Two main male characters, Tom and Gatsby, were both different and similar in many ways. Tom and Gatsby were both liars, but they also loved Daisy, and they were different on how they lived.

Charlie Wales and Jay Gatsby both had a constant hope when they both got rejected about their best desires. However, they both continued to go after their goals with a single-minded decision.
