Colonial Times By: Brandon Yen Introduction Compare Slavery in the 1600s and the slavery now. There has been a big difference. Now people get paid to work. To get something you needed to trade but now you can use paper money. There are not very many pilgrims but people still travel. England pilgrims John Smith left Jamestown to go explore in 1614. John Smith explored the Atlantic coast. When they were at the Netherlands they got religious freedom. The pilgrims left England in 1620. Also, the pilgrims left on a boat called The Mayflower. Pilgrims were on the Mayflower for months. The pilgrims planned to go to Virginia but, hit a bad storm. The wind carried them to Massachusetts. The pilgrims govern themselves because Massachusetts did not have a government. Women did not help make the laws because they did not have the same rights as men.The pilgrims took a long time to find a perfect place and they did. They had fresh water and good land for crops. During winter they were struggling and 50 people died. The survivors saw an Abenaki Indian named Samoset. He was welcoming the pilgrims. The Indians were traded fur for metal and cloth. After the first pilgrims came in Plymouth other pilgrims started coming in. I am realizing that when pilgrims were coming in, it created an impact on the Indians. For example, they started to take their land and the Indians were not too happy. When the Indians were taking their land the war started. Maryland had a lot of the same things
In the time period between 1775 and 1830, African Americans start to gain more freedom in the North while the institution of slavery expanded in the South. These changes occurred due to the existence of different point of views. The North did not need slavery and acknowledge the cons of slavery while the South’s want for slavery quickly became a need.
The origins and development of slavery within Britain’s North American colonies in the period 1607 to 1776 was majorly in part by the English need for economic power. England had just arose as the strongest naval of the North Atlantic had they had to keep their high standing in the world. Bacon’s Rebellion, the profit received by cash crops, and the ability to easily purchase slaves through trade highly boosted Britain’s economy. The colonists within the British colony kept through economic standing and power by making themselves higher than any other through slavery.
During the 19th century slavery was a very prominent and controversial issue between the north and the southern states. In the South, most people believed that slavery was a profitable way of life and if the slavery was to be abolished it would then affect their economy. On the hand the northern had different opinions about slavery and intended to stop it. The fact that the perception were different between the two led to a very difficult situation in resolving the issue.
Slavery was a harsh system that consisted of forcing other human beings to work in harsh conditions; as well as restrict their freedom to the point where they had none. Slavery was first introduced into Colonial America in 1619, and lasted for 245 years. During those 245 years, slavery harshly affected those who were involved in its system. The institution of slavery has profoundly influenced and shaped multiple aspects of Colonial America and the United States. Slavery influenced the 13 Colonies and the U.S. by the growth in sales for Cotton, and farming. Slavery shaped Colonial America and the United States culturally, by proving to the slaves that white people were far more superior than African Americans, religion and Cult of Domesticity. Lastly slavery shaped Colonial America and the United States politically by causing rebellions, and abolitionism.
Slavery became an established activity in America by 1600’s. The slaves were mostly to provide free and cheap labor. Apart from America, slavery was practiced in other parts of the world throughout history, and in fact it can be traced back to the time of the ancient civilization. With industrial revolution especially with the rise of sugar plantations, the slaves were used to grow sugar in the periods from 1100. This intensified between 1400 and 1500 when Portugal and Spain ventured into sugar growing in the eastern Atlantic regions. The growth of the plantations required labor, hence African slaves were bought from Africa, to provide labor.
During the 16th and 19th centuries, slavery was widespread throughout the world. It was practiced by African and European countries to facilitate labor in their colonies abroad. These cultures, who were economically dependent upon the slave trade, also utilized slaves to fill vacancies wherever the citizenry failed to meet the needs of labor. The areas that are experienced in the primary sources are the English colonies of North America, Spanish colonies that spanned from Florida through the Caribbean Islands, and Africa, the European source for slaves, which utilized slaves similar to livestock headed for the market. Whether one was a slave of the English, Spanish, or Africans, slaves were treated differently based on control such as personal agency and use of religion.
The pilgrims wanted to separate themselves from the Catholic Church of England which is why they were called Separatists and wanted to find a place where they had Freedom of Religion and were ready to sacrifice everything they had in England to travel to America so they could practice their faith how they wanted to. They took the Mayflower a ship that would take them to Virginia but when they got there they landed in New Hampshire instead. Since there were no laws there the 40 men in the ship came up with the Mayflower Compact which said “they would agree to make and obey all just and equal law that would be in the overall best interest of their new colony and not favor one religious group from one another” and this was the start of Democracy in America. When the Pilgrims found the place where they were going to settle they named it Plymouth Colony and it wasn’t smooth sailing from there because half of the members in the mayflower died due to poor living conditions and diseases but those who survived did so with the help of Matsui the Wampanoag Chief who offered the Pilgrims shelter and food throughout the winter after they celebrated with the tribe which is later known as
Pilgrims were Englishmen from England who came to settle in America, and they want their own
Philbrick describes how the Pilgrims traded with the Native Americans. The Native Americans received guns and weapons, while the Pilgrims traded for pelts and seeds. Everything seemed friendly between the local Native Americans and the Pilgrims; they even shared a Thanksgiving together, marking the end of a year in America. However, as time went on tensions between the Native Americans and the Pilgrims grew high and war became imminent. Philbrick describes how the Pilgrims tried to protect themselves; they built a wall around their civilization and prepared a militia. However, after years of tension between the two groups war broke out, since the Pilgrims had “…begun to take the Indians for granted” (Philbrick 215). Philip states how “…the English put at risk everything their mothers and fathers had striven so heroically to create” (Philbrick 215). During the war the Pilgrims began to force the once friendly tribes to turn against them, destroying the friendship they had once shared. Near the end of the war and even after the war the Pilgrims sent the Native Americans into slavery. Eventually, the number of Native Americans tribes would dwindle. One tribe, the Sakonnets went from “… an estimated four hundred in 1700 [people] to just six men and nineteen women by 1774” (Philbrick 350). Philbrick depicts the Pilgrims as courageous people who sacrificed
No human being deserves to have their pride and dignity stripped from them, because we all are equal and should be treated as such. America’s race relations history is everything, but pleasant. For example, when Africans were brought here in shackles to make their white slave masters money, and convert them to Christianity. Once slavery began, indentured servants weren’t in high demand, and slaves were more profitable because they worked for free their entire lives. Slavery was inhumane and unnecessary, because human beings were treated like their God given purpose was to make America money and do whatever else their master told them to. These helpless people were treated like objects that could be auctioned or killed if they didn’t obey. Even U.S. presidents felt that slaves couldn’t function on their own, because their color and ability wouldn’t allow it. This awful activity took the lives of millions, especially during the middle passage, because slaves were transported to America shackled and chained at the bottom of a ship. The decision to
The Pilgrims took advantage of the help the Native Americans wanted to offer. The Native Americans were really smart people. They had a lot of knowledge about the land. This was their land, and they wanted to teach the Pilgrims how to survive.
In the Western countries including America, most of the nations incorporated provisions for slavery within their structure of governance. As slavery took roots in the North and South between 1700 and 1799, it influenced political, social and economic structures of the two regions throughout the 18th century.
The Pilgrims were puritans who came to the New World for religious freedom because they were being persecuted. Coming to the New World was tough to manage, but their faith in God helped them get through it all step by step. For example, Bradford writes, “... they fell upon their knees and blessed the God of heaven who had brought them over the vast and furious ocean…”(Bradford 78). This just shows how much faith the pilgrims had in their religion. They believed that if they kept their faith, that possible everything would be okay.
On the ship the Mayflower was one hundred and two Pilgrims, mostly families, who were devoted to achieving religious freedom in the New World. Their original plan was to settle in Holland, but they noticed their children were becoming Dutch and no longer seen it as an option. As they finally
Thus began the movement to America in 1620 to receive the religious freedom and separation that they so desired from the Church of England. Once in America they were able to freely practice their own religious beliefs, and create a fresh life for themselves, their families, and their ideals. The Pilgrims were motivated by religious freedom and this was just a small story of the change of definition of freedom.
