Colonial and revolutionary American writers had quite a few differences, yet were quite similar as well. The dominant interests of revolutionary writers were political and social, whereas the interests of colonial writers were mainly religious and economic. Most of the colonial writers- such as John Smith- mostly fled from religious persecution in Europe. For example, those aboard the Mayflower had quite a number of pilgrims who had fled from England to Holland, seeking religious freedom. These Pilgrims jumped at the chance to go to the New World, where they could worship however they please.
