Comparing Kant And Bentham's Theories Of Abortion

1. The dictionary definition of abortion is: The deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks. Abortion is an extremely controversial issue in contemporary society with many opposing arguments, generally religious ones or the belief that the person hood of a foetus beings at conception. Those who are accepting of abortion generally believe that the person hood of a foetus begins much further on in a pregnancy or at birth. Religious individuals generally are against abortion because they are unable to determine when an individual’s person hood begins. Kant and Bentham’s theories can be used to examine moral issues without also examining the existence of God to the argument.

2. Kant’s theory is a deontological one and is based around the idea that all humans are able to be completely rational and reasonable beings and that they do so freely. An aspect of Kant’s theory of morality is the idea that all rules and regulations should be universal. Kant’s theory focuses on the action rather than the outcome. This meaning that an action can be considered good if the initial intention was good, regardless of the outcome.

Bentham argued the idea that humans pursue happiness and avoid pain. It was not Bentham but Mill who coined the term ‘utilitarianism’ when he was revising Bentham’s work. Bentham was not interested in the existence of God to establish his theory of human nature and moral duty. He explained that two things, pleasure and pain rule all humans. He also created the idea of the principle of utility, which is the idea of ‘the greatest good for the greatest number’. Bentham believes that all humans should live their lives and make their decisions based on the idea of this. Opposite to Kant’s theory of morality, utilitarianism focuses on the end result rather than the intention.
