Shakespeare often used nature in his plays reference the subject matter, this can especially be seen in Romeo and Juliet when Romeo is describing his love towards Juliet. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, love furthers the conflict throughout the play in many ways; one such way is the family feud between the Montagues and Capulets. This feud leads to several negative repercussions such as the death of loved ones. However, the balcony scene shows the depth of love that is felt between the two main characters despite the negative repercussions. Love is a force that cannot be controlled nor tamed. Throughout this scene, nature is often used to describe the love between Romeo and Juliet. By comparing love to nature, Romeo and Juliet demonstrates that love can overcome all obstacles and is a force of nature that cannot be controlled or suppressed. Shakespeare’s use of nature in the balcony scene is most commonly referenced when discussing Romeo’s comparison of Juliet to the sun. By comparing Juliet’s beauty to the sun, the text conveys the idea of Juliet coming into Romeo’s life has changed him for the better. Romeo begins his monologue with, “Juliet is the sun.” (Shakespeare 2.2.3). The sun is the center of the universe, and Romeo uses the sun to state that Juliet is the center of his universe. The use of this metaphor gives a comparison between the consistency of the sun and his love for Juliet. The sun is a symbol of rebirth for Romeo. When the sun rises in the morning, it is
‘’The brightness of her cheek would shame those stars,’’ shows readers that Juliet is now Romeo’s everything and nothing could compare against her. (2.2.19) Shakespeare convinces the audience that Juliet is the most important to Romeo by writing, ‘’But soft! what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun!’’ (2.2.2-3). Before meeting Juliet, Romeo had a bad heartbreak. He had convinced himself that he will never find love again, and his life will forever be consumed by darkness. By comparing Juliet to the sun, that gives bright light to everyone, Shakespeare is conveying the message that Juliet is the light to overcome Romeo’s darkness. Juliet is the one that Romeo will fall in love with and once again will be happy. The sun is not only a provider of light, but is essential for survival. By having Romeo call Juliet, the sun, Shakespeare means that without Juliet, Romeo will not be able to survive. Juliet has become Romeo’s everything and is the reason why he is happy and is able to love life again. This also shows Romeo’s infatuation with Juliet, because by comparing Juliet to the sun, Shakespeare is also saying that everything now revolves around Juliet for Romeo. Due to applying metaphors in his dialogues, Shakespeare is able to persuade readers that Juliet is Romeo’s true love and how much she means to
Romeo and Juliet, though termed as tragedy, love is the dominating and most vital theme of this play, the whole play is intertwined on the romantic love between Romeo and Juliet at their first sight, though the love can be considered infatuation love. In this play, the lovers deny the family and the entire world and proceed with their marriage "Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, I” “And I'll no longer be a Capulet" Romeo abandons his close friends, Mercutio and Benvolio and even risks his life and returns to Verona for the sake of his lady love even after being sent in exile. Love becomes a force for every incident narrated in the play. The lovers take impulsive decisions; by this, they go against the norms of this world. Juliet has no words to explain her immense love "But my true love is grown to such excess / I cannot sum up some of half my wealth"
Love, such a funny thing to think about. A lot of people can’t even explain love without smiling, blushing and giggling about it or being a little upset remembering about the mistake they did in the past being a little bit bitter about it. Some people believe in a forever in love, but of course, others don’t. It’s up to you to think about it, whether or not you’ve had a good experience with love or just start to make a long rant about how stupid it is and how forever is not real. I have a bit of a different approach when it comes to describing love. My culture from the Philippines made me believe that in the right person, in the right time and in the right place, forever in love can be achieved. A song about someone who found their soul
Throughout William Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juliet, the characters represent opposing views on love. Shakespeare did this in order to allow each person in the play to have someone they could relate to and show that not everybody feels love the same way.
People who fall in love can experience countless powerful emotions that can lead to numerous conflicts. This pattern can be seen in the book Romeo and Juliet as two adolescents fall in love, not realizing their families were rivals. In the end, all the tragic events and emotions caused by their love for one another led to them both committing suicide. In the book Romeo and Juliet, the author, William Shakespeare, uses multiple literary devices to convey his opinion that love causes people to feel strong emotions, including being sorrowful and infuriated.
" The technique of metaphor is used as Juliet is being named as the ‘sun’. This highlights her beauty in Romeos eyes. Nevertheless it is late at night, Juliet’s outstanding beauty makes Romeo visualise that she is the sun, changing the darkness into daylight like he can’t live without her. Romeo similarly uses personification, calling the moon
Within the play, Shakespeare uses metaphors and imagery to show the contrasting nature of Romeo’s sadness and how Juliet is his light inside his dark depression. In Act 2 Scene 2 Romeo uses the metaphor of “It is the east and Juliet is the sun / Arise fair sun, and kill the envious moon,”(16). This is important because it shows how Romeo views Juliet. When we first meet Romeo in the play he is downcast and miserable, mainly because of the unrequited love he has for Rosaline. It puts him in a dark depression of which he sees no way out of. Thus, when he says “O she doth teach the torches to burn bright!”(13). He is saying that she is his only light in his darkness and he feels that without her light he cannot possibly continue on living. She means that much to him. Juliet is very similar in this regard, however she compares him to something else,
Most of Shakespeare's plays are conceived around a foundation in either tragedy or comedy, this polarity of themes allowing him to experiment with the full range of human emotions. Typically, an integral part of a Shakespearean tragedy is love, which is frustrated by a breakdown in order, or the character of the hero, due to some human limitation. The play Romeo and Juliet has all these typical characteristics. However, the resultant conclusion of events for the characters in this tragedy is adversely affected by the hands of fate, and not solely the product of human limitations. Fate in fact has a decisive role in the events of the play; it is a series of rapid coincidental events, which lead to the final tragedy.
What is love? Is it an object? Is it a feeling? Is it even attainable? Love is everything, it is an object, it is an emotion, and it cannot be bought, stolen, given. Love can only be found. Love is discovered in the most unthinkable places during the most unimaginable times. It can never be predicted who you fall in love with or when you do but all you do know is that you are in love and you would give anything for that person, and for your love to always stay resilient through all other obstacles and distractions. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Montague’s and Capulet’s are know and expected to hate each other until the miracle of love presented its self. Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet. They both fell in love when
There are many different types of love in this world, thus there are many different ways of expressing love. What revolves around that love, and the many different circumstances, trials, and tribulations that a love might face can greatly influence the outcomes of that love. These trials and tribulations can also be seen as different literary elements when used in plays. When looking at Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, he used many different themes and elements to provide complexity to the love story. Shakespeare cleverly takes the main theme of the play, love, and ties in other elements such as time, stage imagery, and language to pull the whole play together in a way that makes one think about the play on other levels.
Astronomical imagery plays a major role in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Stars are one of the main celestial bodies that are mentioned in the play. Shakespeare manages to make the word “stars” have a different connotation each time he uses it in Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare makes use of things like the sun, moon, and stars to describe a characters fate, to describe when a character in the play is expressing their love and how they feel, and to show how a character views another character in terms of beauty.
Shakespeare does this by noting how Romeo and Juliet do not actually love each other. This is represented by Romeo and Juliets actions and rash decision making. Their decisions are very impulsive and rushed. As a result, it impacted them negatively in the future and as well as their relationship. Romeo and Juliet’s love for each other is not actually how love really is. They’ve mistakenly confused lust for love.
The view on love is different through different people’s view. In Romeo and Juliet by WIlliam Shakespeare, a genre based on tragedy, talks about how Benvolio tells Romeo if he is overcome by love then love will hurt you. The one’s you love the most will hurt you the most. Benvolio, Romeo’s cousin, empathizes Romeo when he gets rejected by Rosaline. Benvolio tells Romeo,” “Alas that love, so gentle in his view, Should be so tyrannous and rough in proof!” (1.1. 174-175). What Benvolio is telling Romeo is that sometimes love pretends to be a gentle emotion when it can be really oppressive and harsh. In addition, this evidence supports the topic sentence because it gives a negative feedback when you see how Benvolio views love and says it can
“But now, my lord, what say you to my suit?”(Shakespeare, I.ii.6). Paris must be very anxious in this moment because he wants to marry Juliet but he must first confront her father. When Lord Capulet neither accepts nor declines the offer Paris is probably angered. He is a man that is used to getting what he wants and for him to be put off and pushed aside Paris is probably irritated. In the end, he will probably be more infuriated because Romeo wins over Juliet’s heart. If I were him I would feel very frustrated and discouraged. The ending would have definitely been different if Lord Capulet had just said yes right away. However, I am very glad that he did not say that because Juliet does not love Paris. Although, in that time period,
Is love a special connection or is it something more physical? Throughout many centuries the perspective of love has always revolved around an association that the two people have in common. William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, we see how love is diverse; Romeo talked about Rosaline. He mentioned that he was very depressed and even offered her money to marry him. Today, love is a crave, something that people do not take much time to think on.
