Shakespeare often used nature in his plays reference the subject matter, this can especially be seen in Romeo and Juliet when Romeo is describing his love towards Juliet. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, love furthers the conflict throughout the play in many ways; one such way is the family feud between the Montagues and Capulets. This feud leads to several negative repercussions such as the death of loved ones. However, the balcony scene shows the depth of love that is felt between the two main characters despite the negative repercussions. Love is a force that cannot be controlled nor tamed. Throughout this scene, nature is often used to describe the love between Romeo and Juliet. By comparing love to nature, Romeo and Juliet demonstrates that love can overcome all obstacles and is a force of nature that cannot be controlled or suppressed. Shakespeare’s use of nature in the balcony scene is most commonly referenced when discussing Romeo’s comparison of Juliet to the sun. By comparing Juliet’s beauty to the sun, the text conveys the idea of Juliet coming into Romeo’s life has changed him for the better.
