Comparing Marxism And The Movie ' Time '

My research topic for this essay is about how Marxism was represented in the movie In Time. The reason I chose this movie is because In Time is one of my favourite films especially since the entire movie has left an indelible impression on me. In Time, written and directed by Andrew Niccol, is a dystopian science fiction allegory, set in 2169, projecting current conditions under capitalism into the future, but instead using time as the currency (Olivier, 2013). When I first watched this movie, I knew little about Marxism, but more about income disparity, which was quite evident in this movie. The country has been divided into “time zones” based on the wealth of the population. The movie focuses specifically on two distinct zones: Dayton, a poor manufacturing area where people generally have 24 hours or less on their clock at any given time, and New Greenwich, the wealthiest time zone, where people there have sufficient time on their clock to live for centuries (In Time, 2016). What I took from this movie was that the world was so cruel, that people had to live in extremely different lifestyles, yet had no chance to change their fate. Everyone stops aging when they turn 25, and their digital clock on their forearm begins counting down. In this research paper, I will be analyzing this movie by using the elements of Marxism, in regards to the ideas of class struggle between bourgeoisie and proletariat, alienation, and the concept of exploitation conveyed in the movie.
