The honoured and remarkable play of Romeo and Juliet and its updated version as a movie that is modernized have some similarities and differences between both. Firstly, the most obvious similarity is the language used in both, as the movie uses the script from the play word by word. Secondly, a difference that is changed in the screenplay due to the difference between the weaponry of both time frames, the swords used in Romeo and Juliet's play are replaced by guns in the screenplay. Thirdly, despite the ignorance of some scenes , the plot remains the same, including Friar Lawrence's plan for Juliet to escape the marriage from Count Paris. Lastly, the Prince of Verona from the play is replaced by a Chief of Police, as due to the difference in …show more content…
(Shakespeare 3.2 196-99) These lines are by the Prince in the play, on the other hand in the movie it is said line by line, but by the Chief of Police who would, according to our policies and systems, be responsible for big crimes that do not require the Prince's intervention. In contrast to our days and the movie's, the era in which is written has no government, organized community or security considerations around the Prince or whoever is the head of the country. If the Prince is always down in the streets, that would look unrealistic and irrelevant to the audience of the movie. A Prince, being in a higher rank is responsible for more serious and larger issues, that would affect a larger section of the community, rather than some feuds or crimes that become less serious by time and easier to deal with and state punishments for criminals. Therefore, police officers and judges are trained for these jobs and the Prince would be solving more serious and federal problems. Briefly, the last difference between the film and play of Romeo and Juliet that is noticeable is the Prince's replacement by a Chief of Police as that is how new policies and governments
Some of the many differences have to do with the modern adaptation of the play to the movie. One of the more noticeable differences of the play to the movie, is the age difference. In the play, Romeo is 18 and Juliet is 13. However, in the movie, Romeo is 28 and Juliet is 16. This is in order to relate to the younger audience watching the play during that time period. However, the age difference is use to shock people watching the
Films and literature are some of the most popular kinds of entertainment today. What happens when a famous literary work is turned in to a popular romance film? A perfect example of this is the modernized movie version of everyone's favorite, Romeo and Juliet. However, many years before the famous movie remake was created, a different interpretation of the original Romeo and Juliet play was turned into a musical called West Side Story. Both are excellent displays of Romeo and Juliet in a more modern light, however, they have their own similarities and differences from each other.
Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, is one of the most well-known stories of all time and perhaps the most famous play ever. As one might expect, the play has been made into a movie many times. The 1968 version directed by Franco Zeffirelli and the 1996 version directed by Baz Luhrmann are two of the most popular films. The older version attempts to create an authentic representation of the play, while the 1996 version places a modern twist on the story. At first glance, the movies are completely different, but upon a deeper look, there are several similarities between the two. This is best demonstrated in the balcony scene.
Romeo & Juliet is one of the most famous plays of all time. All most ever person in the world has heard of this play and the author William Shakespeare. William Shakespeare is one of the first authors to have a play start off as a comedy but ends up as a tragedy. A lot people have even tried to turn Romeo & Juliet into a movie. The most successful at this has been Baz Luhrmann with his star cast; and his use of the exact lines in the play makes his version one of the best remakes of the play. William Shakespeare and Baz Luhrmann version of Romeo & Juliet is similar, but the key differences are the nurse monologue being left out, the death scene, and guns replacing swords.
“How has Romeo and Juliet, one of Shakespeare’s most popular, well-known, and most frequently performed plays withstood the test of time?” is one of the many questions that readers regularly ask. The answer to the question is simple; it’s because Romeo and Juliet has been adapted to the generations that followed Shakespeare’s time. Romeo and Juliet has had many variations and can be interpreted in many different ways. Romeo + Juliet, Baz Luhrmann’s twist on William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is one of the few movie adaptations that have a modern style.
Intro The story of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ has been transformed into films by two different producers. Baz Luhrmann created a modernised version of the traditional story contradicting the film produced by Franco Zeffirelli which was set in to the era of William Shakespeare. The differences between the two films are highlighted during the fight scene and it becomes clear that version directed by Luhrmann created the most tragedy in the scene. The modernised setting and characterisation as well the manipulation of the plot allows the audience to become more involved and engaged with the action, enhancing the tragedy created during the fight scene.
The "Romeo + Juliet" produced in 1996 directed by Baz Luhrmann indeed shows a fine example of the major differences and changes that a story needs when a movie is filmed out of the book especially with the changing time. The film is a shortened version of the original Shakespeare's play. The movie follows the story line very closely with the original story. The story in the movie shows the anonymous origin feud between the two families the Montagues and the Capulets which they had uphold for generations and the chaos in the community in the clashes between the two. The whole movies have kept the track of originality in its important characters, scenes and the flow of the play. The story starts with a fight with scene between the Montague boys and the Capulets' and ends with the death of the lovers, Romeo and Juliet.
One major way the film changed the play is that Maria ( Portrays Juliet) Does not die in the end. Tony (Portrays Romeo) does die but unlike Juliet Maria is not so stricken that she decides to die also, Maria gets the opportunity to move on with her life after a love lost.
Romeo is the one who changes the most in the play becuse in the beginning his friend helps him find a girlfriend and they find a girl named rosalina and then while they are still at the party romeo comes across julietand he thought he had found true love until he came across juliet so at first he was udetermined becuase he had come across 2 girls then later in town he tries to help break up a fight and someone gets killed then he goes from worried to vengfull and that get hims kicked out of town which meant he can't see juliet or he would be killed so he went from vengful to worried again that he wouldn't get to see juliet again .
Both the movie and the play was still set in the modern age they turned the Romeo and Juliet love story set in the late 1500’s to a love story in the modern age with conflicting lives one family against the other and the one thing that kept them together was there love for each other. One thing that both 1996 and 2014 versions have in common was they both seemed to be a part of a gang and had motor vehicle in 1996’s version they rode around in cars like Cadillac’s nice cars like that and the 1968 Romeo rode in on a motorcycle in the first scene. Another thing that all three movies had in common all started with a fight of some sort be a shootout or a sword fight or just a brawl and witch all got in trouble with higher superiority, but on to the 2014
When you think about it, there are an abundant amount of differences between these two stories, but you may not think that there are any similarities. Although, you can find many similarities between the stories, you just have to search hard for them. Throughout my paper, I will discuss the similarities and differences of the plots, characters, and endings in both the original and modern stories of Romeo and Juliet.
Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is the most famous love story of all times, and each generation needs a version of their own, which they can feel identified with. The same play can be interpreted in a totally different way, according to the moral values, the relevant events and the point of view of the time in which it is performed. Thus, two films have been made, based on this masterpiece of English Literature. The first version was filmed in 1968, directed by Zeffirelli, while the second one, whose director is Baz Luhrmann, was made in the late nineties. Needless to say, there are many differences between the two of them, concerning mainly the ways in which certain topics are dealt with.
The Romeo and Juliet movie is truly different than the play. There are a few versions of movies of this play, however, the one we watched in class was highly action packed. It had a whole dissimilar setting that you could hardly tell it was the story of Romeo and Juliet. Even though, it was different in many ways it did have it’s similarities. They did have all the same characters, and main scenes in the movie still.
Juliet! Juliet! I'm coming Nurse. I will compare and contrast Romeo and Juliet the play by William Shakespeare and the movie by Baz Lohrmanns. The topics to be discussed the theme and wanted and loved. Since Romeo was daring because since he got banished from Verona he was brave to escape Mantua to go find Juliet. But, Romeo was a player. At first he was so in love with Rosaline and when he went to the Capulet’s party he saw Juliet and fell in l to Friar Lawrence because he was his counselor and helped him on what he needed.
First, the movie director has tried to modernize the film by setting the film in the contemporary city of Verona Beach. Although the movie did not mention when the story took place, from my observation, it was supposed to be set in the 1970s to the 80s, I can see abundant of skyscrapers, electronic billboards and automobiles throughout the movie. There was also one more evidence, I can find out the time by recognizing the dress-up of the characters, they were in clothes with hippy style, which was a popular fashion trend at that time. In addition, pistols can find in the movie, but not swords in the ancient time. Besides modifying the original setting, the director has added some elements that could not be found in the original play. Take the family of Montague and Capulet as an example, the initial play did not mention why the two families were in a feud. But in the movie, they were somehow rivalries of each other in businesses. When these subtle changes combined together, they allow the emergence of new points of view and reflections to the play Romeo and
