There are always two sides to a story, this can be seen almost every time someone is asked to recount events that have taken place in the past. If one person is asked to tell the story of an event and then another person is asked to recount the same events more often than not what you hear are two completely different stories with some of the same main points. This can be seen even in scripture. The stories that are written in Genesis 17:1-18:15 and the poem Sarah’s List are both based on the same events, but each of the speakers have different views for different reasons. The experiences of every person are different, which is one of the many reasons that two people can recount the same events and get two different stories. I can see why Sarah …show more content…
One reason for this is because of the way that parents and other people of authority talk to children as they grow up. When doing this a parent might tell a boy child look at that bird, on the other hand they might say look at that birdie to a female child. It is said in a way that allows it to be expressed with emotion. In my opinion this is one of the factors that makes women express more emotion in the way they speak and tell stories. One example of this is seen in lines 7-9 in the poem “Would Abraham/grow fat, shriek, spread his legs/across the birthing stool?”. This is told in a very graphic way that is isn’t necessary to get the point of the poem across but does a very good job of portraying the emotion that she feels about the way she is treated. I do not think that a man would portray his emotions in the way that Sarah did in these verses. There are no places in Genesis 17-18:15 that uses language that portrays such emotion that is evoked in this quote. In Genesis 12 it is talking about Sarah doubting God saying “ Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I have become old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?” even this when it is explain Sarah’s emotion still doesn’t use the same type of powerful diction that is different than that of most
Also mentioned in the Old Testament was Sarah. Though she did not lead any wars, she was very sacrificial. Sarah belonged to royal lineage; she was the wife of the prophet Abraham, and the mother of Isaac. She was originally named Sarai, she was Abraham’s first wife. It was Sarah who suggested that Abraham fulfill God’s promises by having sexual relations with Hagar, her personal maid, which was a great sacrifice on her part. However, as the man, this mistake was on Abraham’s shoulders, because he chose to listen to his wife and do the wrong thing. Sarah bore her first son, Isaac, when she was 91 years of age, past the time of being able to conceive (Gen. 18:13). The idea behind this unusual birth was to foreshadow the birth of our Lord. Their
Sarah is a very selfless person because in the short story she put each of her family
Dated back to the 10th century B.C., the story of Adam and Eve is told in Genesis chapters 2 and 3 of the Christian Bible. The creation is the main focus of chapter 2 and their fall and punishment is the main focus in chapter 3. God creates Adam in his image from mud, he blows to his face and gives him life. God presents all of the animals of the land to Adam and he is not satisfied, so God created Eve out of Adams rib as a companion and helper for him, and he is satisfied with Gods work. God commands Adam and Eve to not eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. But, the serpent persuades Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, and she persuades Adam to do so as well. After they eat the forbidden fruit they realize they are naked
Between the two stories (Book 9 of Paradise Lost and Chapter 3 of Genesis ) both still shared the same basis of Adam and eve deceiving god by eating the forbidden fruit. Satan is still portrayed as a serpent in both tales and eve is the first to deceive god but when it comes to differences there are many. In Genesis Chapter 3 satan kinda just comes out of nowhere and you're mystified about how or where he came from and why he is a snake. In Paradise Lost the author gives a back story saying that satan uses the tigris river to get into the garden and he enters through a serpent's mouth.
Towards the end of ‘On the Equality of the Sexes’, Murray specifically invokes the story of Adam and Eve, a story used for centuries to depict women as the sinners, to turn the argument against itself and argue that Adam, or the men, are the real sinners in the Bible, as Adam knowingly breaks the rules while Eve was innocently deceived by the serpent. “Adam could not plead the same deception,” says Murray, “nor ought we to admire his superiour strength, or wonder at his sagacity”, implying that people overestimate the skills of men while dismissing the intellect of women as commonplace. The bigger takeaway from Murray’s invocation of Adam and Eve is that it shows the audience that she is trying to make her argument more relatable by putting gender equality in the framework of the Bible, a piece of work that was not only a religious text, but a way of life for most people in Murray’s time. By analyzing the Bible through a feminist lens and swapping the roles of Adam and Eve, Murray saved women’s reputation as the repenting sinners, but in mentioning the Bible to justify her point, Murray ultimately retreats back to the practice of relying on others’ words to make her ideas worthy of public consumption.
Ironically, "Sarah was formally chastised in print by Catherine Beecher, a prominent educator who objected not only to her position for immediate abolition but also to her "unwomanliness" in defending it in public (Intro.Pg1046). This pushed Sarah to her highest limitations and encouraged her to write Letters on the Equality of the Sexes and the Condition of Woman. Sarah angry at the way woman has been treated, makes a powerful statement-hoping woman will wake up. She writes, "Women has inflicted an injury upon herself by submitting to be thus regarded; and she is now called upon to rise from the station where man, not God, has placed her, and claim those sacred and inalienable rights, as a moral and responsible being, with which her Creator has invested her (Letters on the Equality of Sexes Pg.1053 col.2)
Like a template. Every family had to have one of these. Families during this time did not bond or grow up together, but had been brought and constructed. Another example of sexism can be found in stanza five, as Dawe says, ‘’… and then it was goodbye stars and the soft/ cry in the corner when no one was looking…’’ This shows the audience that in this society, during this time period, men were also stereotyped as they were not allowed to cry. They DO NOT cry.
The Bible and the Quran tell the story of the creation of the first man, Adam and first women Eve or in Arabic Hawa. The background behind Adam And Eve are similar but different in Islam and Christianity. It begins by telling the people how the world started and how we as humans were created. Christians believe that Adam was made from dust, Muslims believe that Adam was made from Soil. In the Bible, the creation of Eve says she was the only woman created from a man. The Qur’an does not say that Eve was created from Adam’s rib, but says that she was created from “of like nature.” The creation of Eve is not described in the Quran. The Quran says that Eve was created for Adam to have a “mate” and that she was also made from the same nature and soul. Direct quote from the Quran about woman “Treat women kindly. Woman has been created from a rib and the most curved part of the rib is the uppermost. If you try to straighten it, you will break it and if you leave it alone, it will remain curved. So, treat women kindly” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim). The rib reflects that all women differed from Adam and was unique. The bible describes Eve made from Adams rib to be Adams companion. Directly quoted from the bible “And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man” (Genesis 2:22). They were both made to fulfill each other and to not be alone on earth. The similarity of the two religions is that they
In the Hebrew Bible, the Book of Genesis and the Greek play Medea, by Euripides, contain female characters that can be seen as complex and have significance and meaning in the text. There are many interpretations involving the female characters, some characters may be portrayed as weak and irrational or strong-willed and wise. I will argue that, women are portrayed in the Hebrew Bible and Medea as irrational and senseless, in order for the men to be portrayed as superior and for women to be seen as inferior. This idea of the female characters being irrational and senseless can be seen in Genesis 4, Genesis 18, Genesis 29, and throughout the Medea play.
Throughout history, there have been certain gender roles established for both males and females. For ages, many held the belief that women must fit a certain mold— good wife, housekeeper, caretaker, etc.,— solely based on the notion that "that 's what women are supposed to do". These societal standards that women are held to are prevalent in all kinds of literature, ranging from works from biblical times to the late nineteenth century. Through her novel, The Awakening, Kate Chopin shows a contrast between the characters of Mademoiselle Reisz and Adèle Ratignolle versus that of Mary Magdalene and Mary the Mother of God as seen in the bible. This contrast pits the image of
I have borne thirteen children, and seen most all sold off to slavery, and when I cried out with my mother's grief, none but Jesus heard me! And ain't I a woman” (Truth 1)? The idea that men are naturally stronger than women due to their physical appearances is being tested by Truth. She challenges this idea because she is able to take the same amount of whips as a man or even more.
Throughout the first act of the film, just by being introduced to Sarah 's family the audience can see that Sarah is a stubborn and selfish character. However, as Sarah is first implied as being elaborate and mean we also see Sarah 's considerate side come out as she begs the Goblin King to give Toby back to her.
For the past two-thousand years, the Book of Genesis has served as work of literature to the western civilization. Whether people believed in the Bible or not, the Book of Genesis tell stories they talk about having good morals, teaching live-learned lessons and overall it gives a glimpse of how the first human being acted when the world was developing and how they handle problems and situations. However, even though the book of Genesis shows a tone of life long morals, Genesis also shows the different sides of humans. Genesis shows how human can be deceitful, evil, and disobedient to authority figures. But these traits with humans were rarely displayed by man, but mostly by woman. In
The story of creation begins with Genesis 1 and 2, it explains how the world and it’s living inhabitants were created from God’s touch. From Genesis 1 we see how the sky, seas, land, animals, and mankind were created. However Genesis 2 focuses more on the first of mankind, known as Adam and Eve and how they are made to be. In this paper I will compare Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 and what the main idea for creation is in each one, however in my opinion there is no contradiction between the two. Genesis 2 merely fills in the details that are "headlined" in Genesis 1.
In the story of creation, Eve causes sin and is the scapegoat for Adam’s actions and thus God then establishing punishments for humans. Woman have more devastating punishments than men: God said to woman “I will greatly multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you” (Genesis 3:16). To man God said that he shall have to grow his food, there is no desire for his wife, physical trauma when making children or for his wife to rule over him. Women also have to grow food to live, but they have the extra punishment of birth and being inferior to their husbands. These messages are quite clear, and what the men who are writing these passages are trying to convey. The silence of the story and the message that is
