The exact definition of what the American Dream consists of is a widely discussed topic. To some, the American Dream may be a big house, fancy cars and having a high salary while to another, it may just be happiness. Each and every person’s dream is different and modified according to their thoughts and goals. However, these dreams have one thing in common, the presence of wealth. The American Dream is laborious to achieve without a luxurious upbringing as seen through citizens living in Silicon Valley and the play, A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry. In the Lorraine Hansberry’s novel, “A Raisin in the Sun” follows the story of a middle class family struggling with cash flow and what to do with an incoming ten thousand dollars. Constant arguments about money between the family members disturbs the family stability causing an unrelenting tension disrupting the happiness that should have been present. Beneatha, the youngest daughter of the Younger family, is the prime example of dissatisfaction. She dreams of becoming a doctor and has vocalized it but receives constant jabs such as, “have we figured out yet just exactly how much medical school is going to cost” (Hansberry ##). Walter, Beneatha’s older brother, is no stranger to showing his displeasure towards Beneatha’s dream. When Walter says “yet,” one can see that the conflict of gathering enough money for medical school has been going on for quite a while, long enough to disrupt harmony between the siblings causing unhappiness to bloom throughout the family. This is not the only time happiness has not been achieved. Once again, wealth seems to be the core conflict of not being able to achieve one of the two components of the American Dream.
