Within the last several decades we have seen a change in our views of religion or faith in sport. Much of our past has been made up of the concept of “don’t ask, don’t tell”. This is no different in the sports world, however, in recent years we have seen more and more professional athletes openly sharing their faith and beliefs. Whether or not one believes in a God or in many gods there is an important ethical question raised by their possible existence. Should we fulfill their role and play God; manipulate the genes of other creatures to make them better and make decisions for others under the premise that we know better than them. These are some of the questions that philosophers have argued for centuries. The famous Prussian/German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche believed we have a moral obligation to become God because we have “Killed God” as he stated in his book “The Gay Science”. More modern philosophers, such as Julian Savulescu, believe that we should play God because humans should be the best that they possibly can.
