Fees Must Fall and Black Lives Matter are two astonishing social movements that have expanded over a course of time. Fees Must Fall originated in South Africa and is known as a movement led by students convincing government officials to lower university fees in order for the citizens to attend, while Black Lives Matter is a movement known for promoting black lives and responding to previous discrimination against black people. Though these movements appear to be the antithesis of each other because of the two distinct topics, they are similar due to their shared experiences of inequality and their mutual platform used to help the movements grow larger. Fees Must Fall and Black Lives Matter both face inequality in the global black community in different ways. Fees Must Fall was a movement born out the struggle to obtain affordable access to colleges and universities in South Africa. While the Apartheid is part of the history behind the struggle, it is not the essence of the movement, but it is the reason why black students can’t afford the fees. Fees Must Fall movements protesters are mainly students that attend Tshwane University of Technology and The University of Fort Hare. I’m a college student in Louisiana, but I support the crisis of the increasing fees in South Africa and has also tweeted “#FeesMustFall”. Twitter uses hashtags as a special tool to become a top trending topic, this enables the topic to be viewed by every person who has a twitter account.
