A necessary and common fight for equality has been one that has survived throughout all of man’s existence. Due to recent racial divide and the product of racial profiling, a movement has risen up to combat these common issues. The most recent and most well-covered is the Black Lives Matter Movement. Even though it has been lauded by some media sources and individuals as the next great movement to champion for civil rights, the Black Lives Matter movement is not the same as the African-American Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s nor is it likely to be as successful. If the Black Lives Matter Movement continues with discrepancies in ideology, lack of clear leadership, and trends of hate, the movement is doomed to fail.

Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a loosely‐coordinated, nationwide movement dedicated to ending police brutality that rose to prominence in late 2014. It takes its name from a hashtag started by three Black feminist activists Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza, and Opal Tometi but the movement and the hashtag are not identical (Freelon, McIlwain, & Clark, 2016). BLM has achieved national reputation through their online and offline organizing, obtaining extensive news media coverage and glowing references in music and entertainment television. Based on a horrendous incident that sparked a concern for a lot of Black people across the world, the sudden need for a social movement was born called BLM. Black Lives Matter is a national organization working for the validity of Black life and also working to rebuild the Black liberation movement. Black Lives Matter broadens the conversation and highlight the incidents around state violence to include the ways in which Black people are intentionally left powerless at the hands of the state. This referring to the ways in which Black lives are deprived of basic human rights and dignity. According to the article The Murder of Walter Scott, which talks about race and class, “African Americans are less than 13% of the U.S. population yet they are nearly 50% of those killed by the police. North Charleston has a population of 104,000, 47% Black and the police force is 80% white (Miah, 2015)”.

The various demands mentioned above by the Fight the Fees movement have been supported with multiple arguments that have been explicitly mentioned within their website. The primary, most obvious justification for their demands would be the simple fact that Ontario constitutes the highest tuition rates in all of Canada, as the current framework allows tuition for domestic students to increase approximately three to five percent annually (Canadian Federation of Students, 2016). This argument then leads to the discrimination this creates towards students of middle-low income households that are simply unable to afford such high rates. Racism is another issue that is brought up within this dilemma because it is argued that those who come from racialized or marginalized groups are at greater risk of facing such realities of financial instability. Amber Stockton’s topic # 1 Demonizing of law enforcement would be opposed by the Black Lives Matters Movement, supporters of the movement and knowledgeable African Americans too because the thesis statement asks a question that is argumentative and debatable. The opposition would know that the writer is not informed on the topic and has made a claim based off of what she believes the Slogan means rather than doing research to provide a logical reason for taking her stance. It is acceptable for the writer to take this type of stance, however the reason for taking it needs to be stated and supported with evidence. However, the thesis does state her opinion or claim and provides the audience with her stance on the topic. I would not refute the opposition because my position is with the opposition.

It is hard to believe that I knew of Black Lives Matter (BLM), however, I never actually bother to learn what it is—I knew a succinct premise of what the movement is about, but never cared to inquire further on the subject. Nevertheless, attending events like the Brandeis’ Black Lives Matter’s Symposium allowed me to inform myself on different angles about the movement and understand it through a brief historical context and through different mediums and points of view.

Blow asserts that African Americans aren’t getting enough attention from the college administrators. Currently ,The “Black Lives Matter” movement is failing, and they could learn a lot from the Civil Rights Movement that took place in the 1950s. The Civil Rights Movement proved that in order to make change through protest a group must have a brand, and a clear and respected leader. The current “Black Lives Matter” movement lacks these aspects but they can be obtained through reorganization.

Social movements are a huge part of society today. Almost every group that wants their beliefs to be recognized and taken seriously, makes a social movement and invites people to join that has the same belief and goals as them. Social movements have been around for a while and a lot of the big movements are fighting for racial justice in society and education for obvious reasons. One of the movements that I personally can relate to and talk about is the Black Lives Matter Movement. The Black Lives Movement is a movement that wants others to realize that Black lives matter. Black people should not be systematically targeted or deprived of our basic needs and rights. This movement in particular goes hand in hand with the Civil Rights Movement.

In this essay I will discuss Black Lives Matter. Black Lives Matter is an activist movement that started in July 2013, when George Zimmerman, a 28-year-old mixed-race Hispanic man was proven not guilty in the Florida shooting death of African-American 17 year old teen Trayvon Martin. This movement fights against what it calls police brutality in the United States against African-Americans. The movement received incitement, from the two deaths of unarmed African Americans, teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and 43-year-old Eric Garner in New York City. The jury in both these cases did not indict the officer and no charges were brought on them. Several African-Americans such as; Tamir Rice, Eric Harris, Walter Scott, and Freddie Gray who died at the hands of law enforcement have had their deaths protested by the movement. In my opinion, an unarmed African-American can be gunned down without adequate reasoning and then left in the middle of the street on display for hours .It just seems like there is seemingly no justice for Black life in America.

When you hear of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. you think of the Civil Rights Movement and fights for justice and equality through nonviolent protests and marches back in the 1950’s and 60’s. While several racial barriers were broken and progress has been made since then, in 2015 the Black community is still dealing with similar problems. The Black Lives Matter movement has swept across America. It 's branched out with chapters in over 31 cities and held rallies and boycotts across the United States(Sidner). The Black Lives Matter movement started with the outrage of the death of a young man. It continues to take over headlines and raise awareness on police brutality and inequality. When Sam Cooke sang the legendary song, “A Change Is Going To Come” in 1964, the transformation of how Americans viewed race was only beginning. The Black Lives Matter movement addressed the implications of slavery and racism that are still in effect today, due to police brutality accusations. The death of Trayvon Martin and Keith Lamont Scott demonstrated to me that silence is a luxury I cannot afford; I could be next.
