Three minutes. 180 seconds. Not a lot of time, is it? What can you do?
Well I can tell you what I am most likely to do in three minutes. Make Ramen noodles. Delicious, filling, and fast ramen noodles. In all honesty, one would be hard pressed to find someone who could resist the tantalizing scent of noodles dowsed in a scrumptious mixture of salt and more salt.
Let us begin with a brief overview of the history of ramen noodles. Created in Japan in the late 50’s by Momofuku Ando, this easy to prepare meal was designed to be a quick and easy alternative to making a full dinner. Mr. Ando made the iconic snack food for the true reason that fosters invention. He created it out of necessity. In Japan there was a shortage of food after World War

It is a savoir. It is a redeemer. It brought me from dropping down in the snow to continue on and reach my goals. It has sustained me, college students whose levels of intoxication reach staggeringly high levels, and even inmates of Rikers Island Jail where Ramen noodles are the most purchased product at the commissary. Ramen noodles saved thousands of people from starvation in Japan. Ramen noodles have brought friends closer together. Ramen noodles are incredible.
Other than being unbearably delicious, ramen noodles are simply on of the greatest innovations. Its very own country voted it as the greatest domestic invention in its history. And Japan the invented the Samurai sword. Samurai swords are pretty awesome.
If nothing else, Ramen noodles are the just plain efficient. In fact, for the number crunchers out there, you can live on ramen noodles for a full year, all three meals, for a measly $140.
Perspective.
That’s about 4.6 days of Boun Amici sandwiches. So the cost per unit of this satisfying meal is off the charts.
Before I finish my piece, I must ask. Who among us has not tasted the love and affection cooked into ramen noodles?

Who would have ever thought a small amount of rice with raw fish on top of it would become so popular across the world? Sushi’s fame jumped an ocean across and became popular in the USA. Many factors contributed to its popularization and has helped make its place in the American cuisine. As time passed by, the simple creations of sushi evolved to complicated combinations and eye catching presentations today. This change was welcomed because it gave a new perspective of the dish, giving it a new face.
The United States has the highest rate of incarceration among the developed countries, with 2.2 million currently in jails and prisons. The number of inmates with mental disorders has been increasing during the past three decades, most likely the result of the deinstitutionalization of the state mental health system. Correctional institutions have become the de facto state mental hospitals. There are more seriously and persistently mentally ill people in prisons than in all state hospitals in the United States. When incarcerated these people face many disadvantages on top of their sickness. They do not receive the psychiatric help they need, nor do they receive proper medication or therapy. In addition, the guards do not know how to properly deal with people with mental disabilities. With so many issues in the criminal justice system there is no room for improvement for these inmates.
“What’s that green stuff?” I asked my mom as she piled some noodles onto my dad’s plate. I tried a piece of the mysterious substance, skewering it on my fork, and recoiling at the creamy, earthy taste. It was too fatty, strangely nutty, and most of all, too green.
In society today there are more criminals in the boundaries of the state prison system than there are in the federal prison system. According to Bureau of Justice Statistics (2009) the United States state prison system has 1,405,622 within their jurisdiction; whereas, the United States federal prison system has 208,118 within their jurisdiction. The reason that the federal prison system has only 208,118 within their jurisdiction is that this system only deals with “the body of law consisting
Prisons and jails hold some similar characteristics but are completely different models in which they serve in the criminal justice system. Some of the types of crimes that America faces today are: violent crimes, property, white collar or organized crime, and public order crimes (Worrall, 2008). The criminal justice system sets the regulations and policies of how an offender will be held accountable for their inappropriate actions. The criminal justice system is a process that takes time and money from society. The following information will briefly discuss the main purposes for the jail and prison systems, which will focus on the length of sentencing, funding sources, and private sector ownership. Let’s begin by explaining the length of
If you listen close enough, to really the only object making any sort of noise in the entire building, you could hear the air conditioning vents pumping air to counteract the Riverside heat. The corridors were long and skinny, and only lit by the light from outside. The “pitter-patter” of your footsteps bounced off the walls and slowly fainted in pitch as you moved down the hall. The rooms on the side were just as dark, if not darker, with no one around at the mere afternoon hours. Walk far enough in this prison-like building and you would reach the front, where there is a three-ring-binder that says on the cover “Early Childhood Services.” This obviously was not a prison at all, it is the University of California, Riverside’s Child Development Center. I had the opportunity to walk around and explore both of the buildings that they have; unfortunately, it was during nap time. Therefore, I could not ask any of the children what they thought of the school, but I am sure my comparison of a prison was not too far-fetched. In contrast, many students clearly love it by the numerous decorations on the walls. From various pumpkin creations for Halloween to cut-outs of the wide-range fall leafs. The school hosts infants to kindergarteners to allow for students and professors at the University to ensure that their child receives the proper care and attention they deserve for proper development. The classrooms are designed so that the door is on the right and the student’s proud art is
Eating ramen noodles (or mac and cheese), and other ready-cook meals are typical norms for college students. Ramen noodles are fairly cheap and can also be purchased in bulk for a relatively low price. The culture of a college student implies that students do not have much money so they do not have access to a variety of foods and make unhealthy, cheap food choices, like eating fast food or microwaving a quick-cook meal. Another belief is that college students are not able to cook, so this is the reason why they eat out. It is not expected for college students to cook, even if it is just a simple meal. An African-American male we talked to said, “I eat out every day because I do not know how to cook, but I do eat in sometimes when my roommates cook.” This student would rather go out and buy fast food instead of taking that time to learn how to cook and prepare more healthy meals. In this specific case, the choice to eat out is the student’s responsibility because he can easily throw a quick meal together that would not require elaborate cooking skills. These norms are upheld and defined by the culture of college
On April 26, 2016, 60 Minutes aired the interview “Rikers Island” of Bill Whitaker with several interviewees, including, an attorney, a father of one of the deceased mentally ill inmates and people who work within the prison system. He explained how there has been a perturbed pattern of “neglect” and “excessive force” received to mentally ill inmates in Rikers Island prison. Specifically he claimed that there has been a rise in mentally ill inmates and correction officers are not suitably trained to deal with the mentally ill, so they mistreat them. As Whitaker said, “The mentally ill now make up more than 40 percent of the population Correction officers are not adequately trained to deal with this population. The result is a disturbing pattern

“Amanda, are you crying?” my friend asks, laughing loudly as she sees my eyes water upon taking a bite of the best steamed pork bun I’ve had in years. We had taken the train into LA that day to see the Kendrick Lamar exhibit at the LAMOCA, and at my request ate Dim Sum for lunch. I order for us in Cantonese: clear shrimp dumplings, sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves, sweet egg tarts, and of course, steamed pork buns.
Sunday my mother fried some pork chops, and pork chops are one of my favorite fried food with corn and rice. I started to feel so weak inside and yearning for it, but my mother

The above picture is a several of steaming hot and colorful dim sum (also known as Dian Xin (heart’s delight) or Yum Cha (drinking tea), from Chinese Cuisine. Dim sum has as many as 150 items on a single menu and about 2,000 items in the entire range; it could be fried, steamed or baked (1. Guide to Dim Sum by Hong Kong Tourism Board website). They are either made to order from a restaurant kitchen or manufactured in a factory (2. SMH, heritage). The core benefit of dim sum is to satisfy the hunger. On an actual product level, good consistent quality in term of taste, texture, appearance and aroma can cause customers more likely to be repeating customers. Again, good package design and reputable brand name are examples of the actual product. If dim sum is to be presented at a restaurant setting, then the speed of food delivery from the kitchen to table and ambience of dining place are examples of the augmented product. Typically, dim sum is batch made and flash-frozen in a central kitchen before delivering to restaurants, caterers or grocery stores.
How could food, such an inanimate object, have so much value in many different cultures? I am going to write about Tampopo because food has a strong presence in it. I want to show that food in Tampopo has cultural value and demonstrates the blending of different cultures through the food. Others have written about the obsession of food that is shown in the film and the aesthetics of preparing and capturing the beauty of ramen. But, I want to continue proving that the food in Tampopo has cultural values tied to them. Tampopo displays a wide variety of food that mirrors the culture of modern Japan. Tampopo especially shows the different cultural food that is eaten: Japanese, Chinese, and European. While traditional Japanese culture has been
