A key point that was interesting was when Krashen explained that there can be competence without instruction. He goes on to give the results of tests that show clearly that the acquisition of literacy without direct instruction. With saying that he also provides some examples how historical figures such as Richard Wright, Malcolm X, and the case of L. There were also some examples of how children can learn to spell without properly being taught and ends with some effects come from instruction, but that it is not comparable to reading on one's own time.
Reading was never a chore for us and it was something we really enjoyed doing. Growing up we did not have cable and reading was one the things we did after our homework was done. We would compete
Some of my earliest memories about reading are when I was in Kindergarten my mom and I would read Dr. Seuss picture books before bedtime. My favorite one was the “One Fish Two Fish” and I always wanted to read it. Later on we stopped reading books and I fell behind on the reading curve for school. I began to dislike reading and I only did it when I had to, I never read on my own. No matter what my mom did to try and get me to read more it never worked
Many assessment tools and interviewing skills are available to the clinical social worker within a mental health setting. This paper will examine one such assessment tool, the competency based assessment, and its applicability in a mental health setting. A comparison will be made between this advanced assessment method and a generalist social work assessment. Interviewing people who have mental health concerns can offer challenges for clinical social workers. Several interviewing techniques that can help with some of these challenges will be outlined.
I can somewhat relate to that because I rarely saw my father pick up a book and just start reading. He would sometimes read the paper to stay caught up on the news, but hardly ever did I see a book in his hand. I do however remember my mother reading quiet often. She would just sit on the couch with her cup of coffee and read for hours. Shoemaker stats that “when I was younger, both my father and mother were never home to neither entertain nor read to my brother and I” (348). That was completely opposite with my mother and I. She would read all types of books to me like The Hungry Caterpillar, Giving Tree, or Dr Seuss. I don’t have a lot of memory of when I first learned to read, but according to her I didn’t read well until the end if Kindergarten. On the other hand, I do remember her taking my brother and I to the public library where she let us check out a maximum of four books each. We would mostly check out nonfiction sports books like biographies of athletes such as: LeBron James, Vince Carter, Allen Iverson, Mark McGwire and many
Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) (2015) states that all nurses should be competent at carrying out an accurate assessment on patients of all ages safely using invasive and non-invasive procedures. Benner (1982) formed the stages of competency: Novice; this is where I started in year one, I had never done a manual blood pressure before and lacked confidence. Advanced beginner; this is where I feel I am at present, I can take a manual blood pressure with occasional supportive cues, I am more confident than the first time and my knowledge is improving. Competent; this is the stage I expect to be at when I qualify, I would like to feel confident and I intend to know exactly what I am doing and why. Proficient; this is where I expect to be
I began my career as a computer operator for a small-scale manufacturing facility. I actually transferred from their customer service department, which is where I learned an excellent skill; I can defuse angry situations and bring calm attitudes to the forefront, which has helped tremendously when dealing with the user community. I worked with off-site developers, via phone conversations, and quickly mastered the concepts. I began to tell the developer what needed changing before they reviewed the code. Without formal training I quickly realized I only understood half of the equation; consequently, I returned to school to earn an associate’s degree in Business Computer Programming. I enjoy the collaborative effort involved in solving a particular challenge, but also enjoy the puzzle-solving aspects of code development; therefore I work alone or with others equally as well. I am looking to be part of a team that can encourage positive change regarding information systems.
While most educational programs generally exclude learning that is not specified in the fixed curriculum, it is encouraging to see that in recent times more universities are open to diverse learning, inside and outside the classroom. I believe that competency focused education being more learner centric and outcome based, will lead to better student engagement because the content is relevant to each student and tailored to their unique needs. This will result in a new generation of differentiated leaders. Having said that, this form of education is more suited for students learning a specific skillset for a specific industry [eg safety/nursing etc]. Application of this method may not be suitable for younger students that that are still discovering
The only time I did read was when I had to, but then the idea of reading changed. The accelerated reading program made reading fun and also a challenge, and not in the terms of difficulty, but for the chance to be competitive. With this program you received points by the grade you scored on the exams and the difficulty of the books you chose to read, and as a little elementary peer I wanted the highest score you could possibly get and the most points. This brought a whole new aspect to reading for me that I had never experienced before. Reading became fun and I loved it. I strived to read more books that were of greater difficulty and this challenged my mind to comprehend them. I believe that I truly gained my love for reading at this point in my childhood, by diving into reading material out of my comfort
Equipment is based on the hazards and the function laid out in the emergency plan. The purchase and maintenance of these equipment are a challenge for community because the lack of fund available. There are other demands that exist that need to use the same funds, so this makes the decision even more difficult. But we must remember that the more equipment available to assist in an emergency, “the better the outcome is” (Haddow, Bullock, & Coppola, 2005).
When I was in Elementary School my parents, especially my dad preached to me to always read because your vocabulary will soon become sizable. I really did not care about reading for fun or about what my dad said. I know that it is my responsibility to read on my own but it did not help that most if not all of my friends in elementary school did not read books for a hobby. My parents tried to get me reading at a young age, but now I am starting to read a lot more than I did several years ago.
These are the skills and competencies I have learned through my studies at Walden University. Kaslow, Grus, Campbell, & Fouad, et al. (2009) stated professionalism comes from my respect for those who need help. Integrity can be built with confidence in the therapist. Attitudes are charitable, polite, caring emotions toward others that fuel my motivation toward helping. This concern welfare of others comes from my religious and personal experiences as a child and young adult.
Reading has been one of my favorite hobbies since I was a little child. I grew up as a normal child should grow and eventually I had to start learning for me to fit in society. My literacy started many years ago, after I knew how to talk and communicate with people. Reading my alphabet was quite stressful and I had to be given a hand by my family members. I remember my parents reading with me and it was the most meaningful and memorable way to spend time with me. This is because I liked reading a lot and I was eager to learn so that I could fit in with my older siblings. My favorite books were storybooks taking about adventures and fairytales
After taking the study skills test, I feel that my scores reveal that I am proficient in one category but then satisfactory in every other one. I find that I am proficient at using Google Drive because I got a 12/12 in that category. I always keep my Google Drive organized with every document in a folder, and sometimes another folder in that folder. For example, I have an English folder with five folders in it, and another folder in one out of those five. I feel that I struggle with organization which is shown by my nine out of 12 on that specific category. I always have a document or project, but occasionally it takes me a while to find it. I could, additionally, use a calendar to always keep track of what I have on a particular day. Improving
As a child, reading was an activity that I loved and grasped from the moment I opened my eyes and saw the world around me; one full of big letters, long syllables, descriptive words, and jazzy sentences that combined to create exhilarating descriptions of everything I would come across in my thrilling adventures. From the earliest stages of my life to my first simple words, to recognizing how a colorful picture matched the plot of a story, I grew, developed, and spent time with the wonderful people around me whom I was blessed to call my uncles, aunts, and cousins. They had spent hours upon hours pouring their time into teaching me the arduous process of reading, instructing everything they could about sounds, syllables, pronunciation, and
Reading is something that is taught to everyone in their early childhood, the time I learned to read I was very fond of books. I loved to read novels to myself and to read them out loud to my sister. I like reading action, thriller, historical fiction, and mystery. During my early childhood we would have challenges of reading such as wrapped up and reading, golden dragon. These were reading challenges for students to read 20-25 specific grade novels during the school year and at the end you got a party if you read at least 5-10. I used to love reading and at that time I would read at least 20 books because I wanted to go to the party and win something with the lottery tickets I got. My childhood was fulI of reading, even if I read because I was greedy and I read because of the party, it still improved my reading level. As I grew and grew my reading
At this point in my life, reading would definitely not make a list of my favorite things to do, but this wasn’t always the case. Some of my youngest memories involve reading, and many of these memories are enjoyable. Every night before bed my mom would read to me, and I remember begging to read just one more before she tucked me in almost every night. This is when my love for reading sparked. Throughout grade school, I continued to read frequently and never found it to be a chore; however, once middle school hit I no longer included reading as a past time or found it pleasurable. Looking back now I realize this was when English class included more forced literature, and school consisted of reading extensive pages in textbooks. Reading
