In our world today there are so many different types of operating systems as well as features and applications that run on them. There are many similarities as well as differences between Windows 7, Linux and Windows Server 2008. The one enduring similarity is that all three are intended to be utilized as an operating system is meant to.

For 30 years, Microsoft has been creating versions of Windows, an operating system for personal computers (PC’s). These versions of Windows, and other operating systems, have revolutionized today’s technology, allowing you to do things like surf the web, almost instantly receive messages, and even calculate the fastest route to somewhere! Microsoft Windows has rapidly evolved with today’s technology ever since 30 years ago.

The partnership between IBM and Microsoft propels each other to the forefront of software design and development and create an industry standard to be followed by all. Although as both companies find themselves with conflicting visions on the design of the operating systems. Soon after Microsoft and IBM agreed to separate and produce their own operating systems. IBM continued producing OS/2 until 1996 with the last product named Warp 4, meanwhile Windows continues to developing operating systems well into the present-day, with its most latest systems being windows 8,8.1, and 10.

The first OS we are going to look at is Linux, it can be a hard system to use and understand, if you have not used it before, you must have a good knowledge of computers in order to deal with Linux. Commands have to be typed in on the command line, and most people do not know or understand command line text. Linux does not have a great number of vendor selling their computer or software, so there is not a good support system for it.

Windows, a program that was created in 1983, but did not change the market significantly until 1990, has grown to control 94.1% of the operating system market (Newman). This has required other companies in the software industry to make all of their applications Windows compatible. Critics claim that Microsoft systematically eliminated all competition of other operating systems and software manufacturers. Microsoft also controls a large part of the software industry. According to sales from April 2002, Microsoft sold 89% of office software to consumers (Washington Post). Microsoft bundles these applications with the Windows operating system, which is, according to them, an effective technique. Critics assert that this forces other makers of office software, like Corel, to lose business, because consumers will not buy another application if one is already pre-installed. Microsoft has grown into an enormous and powerful corporation by a combination of aggressive business practices and having written operating systems (DOS and Windows) for personal computers. From operating systems it branched out into other software which has, along with the operating system, become something of an industry standard.

Microsoft has been the world leader with respects to computer Operating Systems Software, and has increasingly become more efficient and precise with each release. Microsoft released their first version of the Windows Software (November 20th, 1985). This operating system was an anomaly at the time, and has progressed to the point that it is used worldwide on most computers in the world. All of the leading competitors have used Windows as a benchmark and have either copied its features or expanded upon them.

During this revolution, a company named Microsoft developed itself a role in the computer industry and released its own operating system. In 1995, Microsoft had released their first operating system, Windows 95 which became the standard system used on all computers within days. Microsoft soon dominated worldwide sales of computer operating systems by the end of the 1990’s. There are many operating systems that are common on the Internet today. Back when computers could only handle one command at a time, in the 1950 's, was very time consuming. Now, about sixty years later, a computer 's operating system can handle many applications at one time while delivering speed and is user friendly. Although there are many Operating Systems that are available, there are onle a few of them that are well knon and is commonly used. Some of the most common Operating Systems that are used on the Internet are the Windows platforms such as Windows XP, Sun Solaris, UNIX, Apple, and Linux Apache.

Microsoft is a highly diversified company. Its technologically-related products span from software to music players to game consoles to web browsers to search engines to phones. However, its flagship product, the product which has been the primary driver of its profits has been Microsoft Windows, the ubiquitous operating system that runs on virtually every computer in the world. Windows has been deemed so critical that even Microsoft's competitor Apple was effectively forced by market pressures to allow its Macs to run Windows, in an effort to boost sales. "As astounding as Apple's success has been, it hasn't put a dent in the Microsoft Office monopoly. [Current CEO] Ballmer and company still profit on every Macbook running Word, Excel and PowerPoint" (Greg 2012).But while Microsoft continues to make its highly profitable Windows products (despite industry criticism about its user features); it has struggled to diversify in its many critical areas, most notable in its music, phones, and Internet service.

The operating system is an extremely crucial type of system software. It is the backbone of a computer. Without an operating system, our computers will not function properly. Operating systems are highly skilled software that includes programs with an ample amount of information. This information provided from these programs makes it easier for applications to communicate with the hardware. Linux and Windows are two operating systems that dominate in our society today. History of Microsoft Microsoft Corporation, leading American computer software company. Microsoft develops and sells a wide variety of computer software products in more than fifty countries. Microsoft's Windows operating systems for personal computers are the most widely use operating systems in the world. Microsoft had revenues of $14.4 billion for the fiscal year ending June 1998, and employs more than 27,000 people in 60 countries. Microsoft has it's headquaters in Redmond Washington.

Considering that every computer manufactured in the United States and the world has to have an operating system in order to work Microsoft appears to be dominant in this arena. The company has been so dominant over the years that back in 1998 in a complaint filed against Microsoft in the U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia on May 18, 1998, the Justice Department declares unequivocally that "Microsoft possesses (and for several years has possessed) monopoly power in the market for personal computer operating systems" (U.S. v. Microsoft Corporation 1998).

This paper will discuss three main operating systems, Windows, Linux, and OS X. All three of these operating systems have features which are unique unto themselves. Although there may be arguments as to which one of these three operating systems is better it really all comes down to what features are needed for each user. This paper will describe the features that each of these operating systems has to offer.

All started when Bill Gate and Paul Allen, two friends that as early as 13 years old started to mess around with computers, drop out of college to create their own business. This business founded April 4, 1975 is known today as Microsoft Corporation. Allen and Gates created a basic interpreter for computers, that was rejected by Digital Research, but later on IBM made a contract with them. The creation of the MS-DOS for IBM in mid-80’s gave Microsoft the high rock success that still last till this day, making them the dominant operating system for personal computers. Likewise, Microsoft became at a later time the leading business in office suite software better known as Microsoft Office.
