Computers in the Workplace: Are They Used Ethically?
Today's offices look very different from those in the late 1970s. Then typewriters, filing cabinets, and correction fluid were the norm. Today these items have been replaced by desktop and portable computers, database management systems, and word processing software. You are already familiar with some of the benefits of using computers in the workplace—for example, computers make it easier to manage the company database, accounting, and finance-related activities, and communications among different departments in a company—but what are some of the ethical issues that have arisen as a result of using computers in the workplace?

In addition, software piracy, or theft, has become a major concern of software writers and manufacturers. The act of piracy is not as dramatic as it sounds; in most cases, it simply means illegally copying private-domain (copyrighted) software onto blank disks. Because some of this software—from games to heavy-duty business publishing programs—is expensive, it's tempting to avoid purchasing an off-the-shelf package by accepting a friends offer to supply free copies. But, according to the Copyright Act of 1976 and the Computer Software Piracy and Counterfeiting Amendment of 1983, this practice is illegal. It is also unethical. Computer programmers and software companies often spend years developing, writing, testing, and marketing software programs only to lose many royalty dollars to software pirates. If you spent several years writing a book only to lose royalties through the distribution of illegal copied volumes, how would you feel? The issue is the same.
Some software manufacturers write copy-protected programs into their software to prevent illegal copying; other software authors offer free (or inexpensive) copies of their programs (called shareware) through computer-user clubs and publications. Just remember: Before you consider making a copy or accepting a copy of a software program, make sure it's legal—its theft can result in severe penalties.
These are only a few of the many computer-related issues that are
Piracy has always been an issue for intellectual property owners. Piracy existed even as early as the 1500’s. In one famous instance, Renaissance artist Marcantonio Raimondi copied some of Albrecht Dürer’s works and claimed it was his own (Gambino, 2011). Politicians and content creators try to combat piracy with laws and lawsuits, but people engaging in piracy remain active and elusive. However, the development of the Internet has exacerbated this issue. Technological advancements, specifically the advancements in file sharing, have made the exchange of information extremely inexpensive, quick, and easy. People have direct access to unauthorized copies of millions of movies and songs due to programs such as Napster and Limewire. Thus, illegal
Technology provides a new level of professionalism into the world. Imagine walking into a meeting or a presentation, you see all your coworkers on their laptops making notes, or at least pretending to. Then there is you, stuck in prehistoric times, with a pen and paper. Wouldn’t look too good would it? In the workplace a certain level of professionalism must be met
In the global market that we leave in companies are trying to find any and everyway that they can to get ahead in their respective markets. This most of the time brings out the most innovate thinkers that can come up with a way to keep it’s company on top of their market and sometimes we see that there are companies that like to take a short cut by using non legal and malicious methods. According to Lewis, (1985), Software piracy is the illicit copying of the operating instructions and applications programs, which make computers work, is a large and growing industry. The Pirate Bay is part of a European social and political movement that opposes copyrighted content and demands that music, videos, TV shows, and other digital content be free and unrestricted. In the words of the Pirate Party, “the Pirate Bay is a unique platform for distributing culture between regular people and independent artists, and that’s something we want to preserve.”
Unlicensed software use continued to be a major problem in 2013. Indeed, 43 percent of the software installed on PCs around the world was not properly licensed, an uptick from 42 percent in 2011. The commercial value of the unlicensed installations was $62.7 billion. (The Compliance Gap, 2014). As we can see piracy of software and other digital media is a global problem that adversely affects many businesses and the welfare of employees and consumers.
2) List at least three things related to computers that would be unethical to do in the workplace.
The consideration of computer ethics fundamentally emerged with the birth of computers. There was concern right away that computers would be used inappropriately to the detriment of society, or that they would replace humans in many jobs, resulting in widespread job loss. To grasp fully the issues involved with computer ethics, it is important to consider the history. Cyber fraud which I

By selling collections that contain the whole program of the copyrighted material, Software of the Month Club (SOMC) is selling the copyrighted material without permission from the copyright holder, Cybersell Impact, Inc. The claim of endorsing and distributing the shareware as performing a service for the creators infringes the copyright law because of the distributions of the whole program. The copyright laws allow a small portion of copyrighted material to be used for socially beneficial purposes, but not the whole program. And, there was a restriction on the distribution that allowed the sample portion to be distributed without charge to users. The actual charging of the software and the fact of the whole program being distributed violated the copyright laws and the restriction of the copyright holder.
Prior to the age of technology, ethics include the moral decisions made by individuals relative to the social and the acceptable norms of the time. Ethics, more specifically, computer ethics have developed due to advancements of IT. Information technologies were initially established as reliable means of communication and exchanging information in an efficient and effective manner; but they have intertwined into various aspects of our society and become so much more. These technologies have created a place to discover friendships, find love, socially gather and, etc.
The impact of computer technology in the workplace has been enormous within the past decade, both positive and negative. Distant communication through the use of computers and mobile devices have overhauled the office setting completely. Email, social networking sites and the world of the Internet have opened a whole new avenue of communication. Technology has changed the entire workplace environment, the relationships, and how things get done.
The advancement of technology within the past few decades have brought a revolution in the workplace. Technology has had profound impacts on work ethics because of the advancement of technology. Work ethics standards differ from person to person; open to interpretation. According to Amelia Jenkins of Small Business Chronicle, “A work ethic is a set of moral principles an employee uses in his job. Certain factors come together to create a strong work ethic”(Jenkins, 2011).
We all know that downloading pirated music and films is illegal, but what exactly is it? The term piracy refers to the copying and selling of music, films and other media illegally; in other words you are copying and selling copyrighted media without the permission of the original owner (NiDirect, n.d.). With the massive growth of the internet and its ability to store and capture vast amounts of data, we have become much more reliable on information systems in all aspects of life, but it does not come without the risk of information technology being used unethically. With the number of IT breakthroughs in recent years “the importance of ethics and human values has been underemphasised” often resulting in various consequences. Not surprisingly one of the many public concerns about the ethical use of IT is that “millions of people have downloaded music and movies at no charge and in apparent violation of copyright laws at tremendous expense to the owners of those copyrights” (Reynolds, Ethics in Information Technology, 2015). This essay covers the ethical issues of downloading pirated music and films and the impact it has on music corporations and recording and film companies.
It is a common practice especially in industries that have a large number of employees whom they cannot monitor in person. The research will examine computer monitoring as one of the methods which the management uses to monitor employee activity at the workplace. The researcher will examine the advantages of computer monitoring at the workplace in detail in relation to the legal realm, public perception and criticism. Firms store most of their data in the computer database. In fact, many companies rely on computer networks to communicate with its employees, stakeholders and clients.
Walk down the street in Thailand and amongst the numerous trinket vendors, you will find one that has catalog of software titles. The same catalogs can also be found at the major shopping malls at numerous retailers. Flip through the catalogs, choose your software titles, and pay around US$3. A runner will go retrieve your titles and, in about 5-10 minutes, you will have your new software. This is only a glimpse of the multi-million dollar world of software piracy and how accessible it has become in the land of smiles, Thailand.
I think, if you say that I have not ever got involved theft, you should think once more. You know, nowadays, all people can use the Internet easily. Especially, we dowload a lot of programs from the Internet. When we click on a site for dowloading programs, you can see so much advertisements which have free programs. However, there is someone who endeovors for these programs. In our day which nobody gives a thing nearly without expecting something in return, do you think that these programs are free? Certainly,it is not. It must be a provision of these services because engineers who design a software may spend months. But some of people sell these labours at own site by stealing. Of course, they are thieves, however who are we using these illegal programs? Most often, unconsciously, we may be included to this crime. However, this does not change our offence. In fact, using illegal software damages in three different ways. These are damages which are doing to person by oneself , are doing to the goverment budget, anda re penalties.
