So many people are talking about whether or not the Confederate Flag is racist, and whether or not it should be banned in the U.S. Why are so many people even considering it? The Confederate Flag is definitely not racist. It represents a time of racism and discrimination, but does that truly mean that the flag itself is racist? Just because the flag represents the Confederate States of America, the slave states, it doesn’t mean that the flag is blatantly racist. The flag is only a symbol, a piece meant to represent that time. It doesn’t have anything to do with what happened in that time, more just something to represent that cause. This was the Confederacy's tactic, flashing a flag that was followed by destruction. It’s bright colors were meant to be visible from anywhere on the battlefield. Although this flag was used throughout the war, all it was was a visual effect. It did not speak about racism, act for racism, or show racism. It was only created for show, nothing else. It was merely an irrelevant piece of cloth that was waved in the air during battle.
Banning the flag would do nothing, it wouldn’t prevent hate crimes against African Americans, nor would it give white supremacists any less ability to do harm. All it would do is erase a piece of our history’s image, regardless of how it makes us as Americans look. The Confederate Flag does easily give an image of hatred and violence, which is what was intended when it was first designed and created. By banning the flag, you would easily give a passage for more violence from white supremacists. Many accusatory claims could include the free speech argument, as well as the racist swings at any minority near. Any possible way of removing the flag would prove to be obsolete, as arguments from several parties would both delay the
