Battle flags were used during the Civil War to build morale within the soldiers, and remind soldiers of what they were fighting for. These soldiers would die fighting to make sure their flag wasn’t taken by the enemy. Unlike their southern states, the Union did not adopt the trend to have battle flags, instead the Union mainly flew the American Flag. The Confederate States of America (CSA) had three main flags during this war. These flags included the first flag, which was the “Stars and Bars”. As we know, the battle flag was flown in a war that supported slavery, and a time that hate groups were trying to stop African-Americans from being equal. It is clearly stated in the second paragraph of the Deceleration of independence that, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” This clearly states that all men are created equal, and if you support a flag that clearly represents a time when all men were not created equal, then you are not as big as a patriot as you may seem. The Deceleration of Independence also states that all men are endowed to their unalienable rights. Some of these rights that are stated were not fully given to the hard working slaves that were often killed by their “master”. These African-Americans were not allowed freedom of speech, liberty, life, or happiness. So, if you really support this flag you don’ support what our founding fathers meant for this country to be. Also, this flag has had hate groups and violence formed around it. Including the latest Charleston Church shooting, in which Dylann Roof (the shooter) killed 9 innocent African-American church-goers. That latest shooting is only one of the many race related hate crimes that have happened in the last ten years. Our sixteenth president had to go to war to freed the slave, and fighting against the flag and the flag are still there, making it going against the government.
