Conflict means a struggle or problem between two opposing groups or individuals. There are two types of conflict: internal and external conflict. An internal conflict is a struggle that is internalized and deals with choices, consequences, or emotions. An internal conflict is a man vs. self struggle. An external conflict is a struggle between the protagonist and another character against nature or some outside force. External conflicts are either man verses man, man verses nature, or man verses society. Various examples of internal and external conflicts can be shown in Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace,” Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game,” and O.Henry’s, “The Gift of the Magi.” Firstly, Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace” shows …show more content…
He is put into a situation where he has to swim until he finds shelter. He swims, and “for a seemingly endless time he fought the sea” (Connell 42). After a while, he found an island called Ship Trap Island. So, this shows how he fought against nature. Another example of conflict in this story is when Rainsford has to fight against General Zaroff, who is an expert at hunting humans on Ship Trap Island. As Rainsford gets challenged by Zaroff, he says, “‘Thank you, I’m a hunter, not a murderer’” (49). This shows an example of another external conflict. But, this one is a man verses man conflict because Rainsford is facing a problem with another character in the story. Therefore, Rainsford faces many situations where he has to choose between life or death. Lastly, examples of conflict can be shown in “The Gift of the Magi” by O.Henry. This story is about a cute couple that is willing to do anything to buy each other Christmas presents. An internal conflict faced by Della Young, the protagonist, is when she does not have enough money to buy her husband Jim a present. All Della had was “one dollar and eighty seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas” (O. Henry 153). To get more money, Della sells her most prized possession, which is her hair. After Della and Jim finally bought their presents by selling their most prized possessions, another conflict arose. Della bought Jim a chain for his watch, and Jim bought Della hair combs that she
Every story should have at least one conflict, which tells you about the character and how they act in different situations. But, a story that has all three conflicts is much more interesting. In Richard Connell’s story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” Rainsford is challenged with all three types of conflict: Man versus nature, man versus himself, and man versus man. Rainsford faces nature as he is stranded in the middle of the sea by himself. Also, Rainsford struggles against his own self while he is being hunted by General Zaroff. Lastly, Rainsford is challenged against another human as he fights Zaroff. Therefore, all three conflicts are faced by Rainsford in the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game.”
During the short story Rainsford fights nature very often. The reason the whole story takes place is caused by nature, when Rainsford falls of of the yacht because the ocean waves are so strong. Rainsford battles with the sea multiple times, and barely stays alive. When Rainsford falls off of the yacht, the harsh waves hit him in the face, and the salt causes him to gag. The ocean tries to pull him under and drown him, but Rainsford fights on. Rainsford beats the sea from killing him, and makes it onto Zaroff’s island of horror, but, “All he knew was that he was safe from his enemy, the sea” (3). Later on in the story, Rainsford finds himself again about to have a battle with the sea for his life when he is standing on the edge of the island, and Zaroff is just
Conflict is not something that can be avoided, especially in fiction. In fact, conflict is the main purpose of how a story came to be – without conflict, there will be no story. As quoted from Peder Hill (n.d.), “Its the primary ingredient that weaves together all the other elements of a novel”. However, conflict can arise in a story in various forms and they alter the course of the story. For instance, a conflict of decision. What decision is made by the characters moves the story. This is called external conflict, which Rector (2002) defines as “a struggle between a character and an outside force”. On the other hand, conflict within a character may also arise, which is called internal conflict. Internal conflict means “a struggle that
In the story The Most Dangerous Game one conflict is man vs nature. Rainsford is fighting nature because he is on a ship and he came across an island. Rainsford falls overboard and has to swim for safety. “All he knew was that he was safe from his enemy, the sea and the other was weariness on him”. In order to survive rainsford hast to swim to the island and find shelter. In the conflict man vs nature this shows Rainsford bravery.
There are different types of conflict, the conflict such as Man .vs. Nature, Man.vs. Man, and Person .vs. Self these types of conflicts show the struggle people have to go succeed a goal, dream or just to survive. In the poem “Ode to a Mouse” by Robert Burns and the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, both authors use the literary element, Conflict to show the struggles of the characters.
All stories must have a conflict in them. Some have only one but the narrator and author of the short story “ The Most Dangerous Game’’ by Richard Connell has not only one but three to give the story a little rage . Man vs man, man vs himself and man vs nature are all included in the story. They all exist in the story and these are some of the examples the author puts on the story when writing it.
The conflict in this story is man vs. man and man vs. nature. The first, man vs. man, is the most obvious and recognizable conflict in that it shows the main conflict for the protagonist. Rainsford finds himself pitted against his host, General Zaroff, struggling to stay alive. Man vs. nature occurs as he is running through the jungle away from Zaroff. He must use his surroundings to his advantage to save himself. It is also seen when he encounters the quicksand, and when he reaches the ocean
Every author creates some type of conflict to have the reader sitting on the edge of their seats whether the conflict be man versus man, man versus self, or man versus nature. The novel The Road by Cormac McCarthy wrote a story about both a man and a boy who have particularly conflicting characteristics when it comes to decision making. The boy in the story is very optimistic about everything and the man can be pessimistic when either deciding on what to do or when thinking about life or the future. In addition, both characters have different outlooks and personalities that can sometimes collide.
Until he finally made it to shore on this island called Ship-Trap Island and that’s when he met his second conflict which was General Zaroff. General Zaroff was saying that he was getting bored of hunting animals so he told Rainsford he is hunting the most dangerous game of all. Which was hunting other humans so general Zaroff asked Rainsford if he wanted to come at night to hunt some humans who come on this island. Rainsford denied it so Zaroff sighed but he was starting to get bored hunting humans so he wanted to hunt Rainsford because Rainsford is a hunter as well so now Rainsford is the one that is being hunted by general Zaroff. Rainsford tricked Zaroff by, Rainsford was hiding under Zaroff’s bed and surprised him when he came in so right there is when Rainsford decided to kill Zaroff so Zaroff won’t kill anybody else. Rainsford conflicts are the same because in both conflicts is where Rainsford is in a life or death situation so Rainsford decided to take the good way and survived both conflicts. First conflict is like (man vs nature) that’s is when Rainsford is fighting for his life in the sea and the second conflict is like (man vs man) that’s when Rainsford is fighting Zaroff for each other’s life but Rainsford won on both those are the
One conflict was Rainsford versus himself. “Rainsford had dug himself in France when a second's delay meant death. That has been a placid pastime compared to his digging now.” This shows that Rainsford's past experience during World War I caused him to strongly believe that killing people is inhuman and that he must fight for what he believes in. *
The first conflict, nature, is a powerful source in which Rainsford battles to survive. For example, in the novel Night of The Twisters by Ivy Ruckman, Danny Hatch fights to protect himself and his step brother from the twisters . The twisters are a product of nature, and so is the ocean that Rainsford swims through. Rainsford is determined to reach the sound of a pistol when he is thrown overboard, and as he reaches the cliffs, he is relieved to be on land, “All he knew was that he was safe from his enemy, the sea, and that utter weariness was on him” (3). Rainsford is drained of all energy from struggling and fighting to survive. Sleep consumes him,
The fear that must not take control of the mind represent the conflict man versus himself. The three conflicts appear throughout the story. Man versus nature is the first conflict that challenges the main character throughout the story. An example of man versus nature is when Rainsford falls off the ship and into the strong powerful ocean waves and “ For a seemingly long time he fought the sea” (2). This type of conflict is for the characters to fight the forces of nature as Rainsford has done.
Conflict. It is what we all deal with everyday. Problems, dilemmas, discords, it all seems like there is more problems than we can solve. In a short novel called “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, a man named Sanger Rainsford is left facing a bombardment of conflicts as he is accidentally stranded on an island, occupied by a mysterious man named General Zaroff. Rainsford is compelled to survive three days on the island as he is forced to play Zaroff’s game. Richard Connell uses many ways to arouse conflicts in “The Most Dangerous Game.” The use of conflicts in stories create suspense, creates the plot, and allows the characters to develop as the story goes on.
An example of conflict is like: When the person who was suppose to save the world found out that the people she thought was her parents, were actually not her parents. But she still don’t know who they are. Then the audience might want to find out who really is her real parents, and who is the people who claimed to be her parents? And then the audience would want to read more of the story. And if you want the audience to immediately focus on your story.
“Conflict: a struggle between opposing forces. A conflict is external when it puts a character against something or someone outside of his or herself---another character or characters or something in nature or society. A conflict is internal when the opposing forces are two drives, impulses, or parts of a single character” (Mays A3).
