Before the communist revolution in China, its’ society was based upon Confucian thought and practices. A main concept of his was that the family was a fundamental unit of society. Although this was similar to communist values, it was quite different. Confucius saw it to be ideal if family had hierarchy, with men superior over women, as well as elderly over the young. Society was very patriarchal during this era, as much as it was in many different parts of the world.
