Don’t feel bad for Japes as he rocks in his chair watching the cardinals and the squirrels’ race around the towering pine trees across from his front porch. It has been a few years since he retired and although he is not naive he still shakes his head when reflecting on the vicious nature of the greed shown by those in the world outside of the hotel. Of course the nature of a hotel culture is in itself one of safety and comfort. Servers are a breed all their own with skills in many disciplines all of which are aimed at bringing a smile and sense of belonging to everyone not just a select few. It is an extremely challenging skill and an equally satisfying career. Servers do not receive the recognition that many other disciplines get, but when …show more content…
As he was given in his youth, Japes gave his family the introduction to Conifer every summer and every Christmas. The boy, Peter, took to fishing as if it were in his genes. The highlight of which was winning the local fishing derby at the age of 5 with an 18-inch large mouth bass. It took all he had to land the behemoth. The girl, Megan, gravitated to the sheer beauty of the area. She is a gifted painter and photographer with a great eye for the moment. They all still spend time at Conifer as they fish from the dock or go for swims in the lake. Japes wheels around the compound on his scooter visiting with the Conifer community. Some have been there for generations and some only a few years. They always visit with UJ, his uncle, who has a summer getaway on the compound. The King of Grub has a spectacular view of the entire mountain range highlighted in the foreground by a magnificent stainless steel tree. They do not indulge like they did in their youth, but there is always plenty of liquor and endless laughter. It is in every way one of the most beautiful spots in the world.
The rewards continue as visits from servers have been steady over the years, and Japes loves the company. Throwback and Chief visit a couple of times each month for a glass of gin and the usual banter on sports and politics. Chief is contemplating moving south for warmer weather.

She is a wonderful leader of service and is blessed to have Mike as a partner. Politics always comes up with Classee and she likes Hillary. Japes isn’t sure she will further the black movement as much as Bernie. They guess only time will tell. Classee reminds Japes of the servers that he worked with in Grub-land. She is sincere and thoughtful. She was curious on Japes thoughts about Bill Cosby, as she had partied many times at his home in her youth. Japes knew a young girl from the City of Mountains that Cos dated some forty years ago so he thinks Bill’s behavior is a little suspect. One of Japes greatest cultural rewards has been his friendship with Classee and an introduction to the black
It was Wednesday, August 12th and I was just about to enjoy lunch with Sarah Lucas when I received a message on my phone, “PIPING PLOVER AT CONNEAUT.” Lunch was over - I quickly grabbed my Binoculars and my camera and I was off!!!
Before reading the third chapter of “The Forest and the Trees”, I remember learning in the second chapter about symbolism, ideology and the construction of life in different cultures and societies around the world. For example, something interesting I remember learning was how every social system has a culture, consisting primarily of symbols (including words), ideas and practices. I believe this also connects and refers to how we tend to build our own sense of reality through the words and ideas that we use to mean something and people may use to name interpret what they experience and how cultures consist of symbols of ideas or words being portrayed. Based on what I read in the second chapter and the title of the third chapter, “The Structures
In the short story “The Thing in the Forest” by A.S Byatt, the author introduces the thing as dark, ominous and has a very putrid smell that is almost like a representation of death. The thing in the forest lurks and wanders around the forest next to a house filled with children that have been sent there because they have been evacuated from their town. I believe that the thing represents or would symbolize many things, and also considering the time frame the story was written in pre-world war era I would say that the story probably represent the death or the decay of the men that fought in the war. Also I believe that the thing symbolizes something literal like an injured soldier that tried to get the attention of the girls that wandered the forest. Lastly, In parts of the story I gives you some indication of the thing and it makes the thing sound like it might be any army closing in on a country or city cause the thing came in “waves”. So the thing might be a wave of scary putrid smelling soldiers that sound and looks like death.
“The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant,” by W. D. Wetherell, is an initiation story in which the symbols of fishing and Sheila Mant illustrate how the character of the narrator transforms from youth and innocence to sophistication and maturity. At age fourteen, it is typical for a boy such as the narrator to be beginning this transformation. Being innocent and naïve in a sense, the fourteen year old narrator gets an enormous crush on a seventeen year old girl named Sheila Mant and comes to believe she is what he loves most in life. For him, Sheila is a symbol of the maturity and sophistication he will eventually become a
In Allen Johnson’s “The Forest, The Trees, and The One Thing”, he expresses that in order to understand sociology we need to be able to understand the relationship between biography and history. To explain this, Johnson uses five rules to sociology called the sociological imagination. These rules explain how an individual relates to social systems.
Catastrophic events such as war tear down nations, cities and families in an unimaginable fashion while also causing sorrow, suffering and misery throughout its course. In A.S. Byatt's short story, The Thing in the Forest, we can get a feeling of the crisis people were going through in England during World War 2.
Trees and plants represent life in the novel which ties into the overarching theme of the dehumanization that comes from slavery. Many of the characters in Beloved have been subjected to awful events causing them to feel as if they were worse than animals. Because of this, many characters look to the beauty of nature and trees in particular, to help them heal from their time in slavery. For example, Baby Suggs decided to preach in a place called The Clearing, which is surrounded by tall trees. "In the Clearing, Sethe found Baby's old preaching rock and remembered the smell of leaves simmering in the sun, thunderous feet and the shouts that ripped pods off the limbs of chestnuts. With Baby Suggs' heart in charge, the people let go." (Morrison 94) Another example of trees bringing healing to the characters in the novel is the arrival of Beloved. “A fully dressed woman walked out of the water. She barely gained the dry bank of the stream before she sat down and leaned against a mulberry tree.”(Morrison 60) This tree represents a chance at a new life for Beloved and also offers Sethe a chance to heal. Ever since killing her child, Sethe has been haunted over her decision and she is finally able to confront her past with the appearance of
They upgrading a hotel first upgraded employee facilities. When a survey at London hotel showed dissatisfaction with workers’ areas, installed new floors, lockers, and showers within three months. Four-seasons needed to get it down to the front line: clerks, bell-staff, bartenders, waiters, cooks, housekeepers, and dishwashers, the lowest-paid and in most companies the least-motivated people, but the ones who would make or break a five-star service reputation. Four-seasons needs employees able and willing to respond on their own to whatever comes up, employees who can spot, solve, and even anticipate problems. That means delegating authority as well as responsibility. Four-seasons pay attention on how to treat employees and make them feel confortable when they work in hotel because employees could bring positive attitude towards customers if they in good mood.
Throgutout the book, the main character was going through mistrust moments which made me very curious what those calls and sound that she couldn't identify. In the beginning it was very interesting because it made me very thoughtful and having that curiosity of knowing what made the man character to be adventegous and expressng her confidence throughout the pages. If I was in this type of setting I personally wouldn't have the courage to go out in the wild to see what those particular calls and sounds were. I’m a very self-conscious person so I give a lot of credit for the 15 year old girl that stood up for herself in a way.
Within the small, hallow space between Greed and Sloth, Discontent lies, dormant and unrecognized. They prey upon those weary, malcontented souls who have nought to do but ruminate upon what they do not have, rather than upon the great many things they do. And in a decrepit shack in the Evergreens, Discontent lures those who would decide to feed off its disquieting presence. They first hear the sounds of a fire roaring, burning, consuming. Then, they will feel their arms and legs grow heavy and weak, straining for every modicum of movement. Finally, they will see their greatest desire, whether it be power, or wealth, or affection, just beyond the line of trees, and they will be helpless to resist the thrall. They will travel for miles and

In this short story The Thing in The Forest has many types of Figurative Language but mostly it represents Symbolism. One major symbolism is “the thing” which the girls, Penny and Primrose encounter while they were in the forest, represents the the bad things of WWII.
Sociology is the study of how people relate to one another and how systems influence them, The Forest and the Trees by Alan G. Johnson is a book describing how sociology works and how it influences an individual. Johnson goes through many different concepts to try and explain how sociologists view problems and situations. He uses socialization, roles, statuses, family structure, culture, Above all, Johnson’s main focus is how systems influence people and how people, in return, influence systems. Therefore, the main focus of this paper is relating people and systems by using the movie Far Away From Heaven to solidify Johnson’s concepts.
