Conspiracy Theory: Cartoon

The attack on American soil on September 11, 2001 is one conspiracy theory to consider. The timelines given to the American people concerning the 9/11 attack do not make sense. At approximately 8:46 am the American Airlines Flight 11 heading to Los Angeles crashes into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, and at 9:03 am the United Airlines Flight 175 strikes the South Tower of the World Trade Center. The events that occurred on September 11th, 2001 are some that will never be forgotten in American History. What was a beautiful day in New York City quickly turned into a American Nightmare as multiple planes where hijacked by a terrorist group by the name of Al Quida. While these events have where one of the worst tragedies in American history their also comes many conspiracies theories. Some of these theories suggest that George W. Bush knew about or even planned the tragic events that happened that day. However these conspiracierie theories are simply false. Conspiracy theories that blame the events that occurred on September 11th on the American Government are not true. Still to be able to prove these theories incorrect one must understand what exactly happened on that terrible day in New York City.

Brian Keeley’s short essay, “Of Conspiracy Theories” discusses conspiracy theories and their value in an epistemological context. Keeley defines a conspiracy theory as “a proposed explanation of some historical event (or events) in terms of the significant causal agency of a relatively small group of persons-the conspirators-acting in secret (Keeley 1999, pg. 116).” Keeley seeks to answer the question of why conspiracy theories are unwarranted. His interest in the warrant of conspiracy theories focuses on ¬the unfalsifiability of conspiracy theories and how conspiracy theories are founded upon an extraordinarily large amount of skepticism. After some research I figured out that when the artist created this cartoon s/he wanted to show the reader that the man is actually excersizing his right to the fifth Amendment. In doing this the man doesn’t admit to committing this crime and gives the police no evidence whatsoever to use against him in court. I thought that this cartoon, although a bit cryptic, conveyed this message very well and in a realistic fasion.

However the example of the poll conducted by the Fairleigh Dickinson University that 63 percent of registered American voters believe in at least one political conspiracy theory lacks in depth explanation of both the data collection process and sample selection criteria. In the absence of adequate detail, it is extremely difficult to assess the validity and reliability of the findings.

Once you believe in a conspiracy it is easy to believe in the possibility of other conspiracies even if the other conspiracies are improbable and contradictory. Conspiracy theory is defined as “a proposed plot by powerful people or organizations working together in secret to accomplish some (usually sinister) goal.” Conspiracy theorists’ skepticism of official narratives may be so intense that many alternative theories are simultaneously endorsed in spite of many contradictions between them.

They use their artistic skills as an aid to convey messages to people of all ages. Political cartoons appear all over the internet and social media. The cartoonists usually distort several of the characters’ physical features in order to emphasize a belief or criticize an idea in the society. A recent political cartoon depicts Donald Trump with a long nose. The cartoonist tried to influence the viewers into believing that Donald Trump is a liar, and he does not fit to be president. It might seem that the cartoonist drew the cartoon just to make the viewers laugh, but his goal was actually to present the reasons why US citizens should not vote for Trump. This drawing might not immediately cause the viewers to alter their attitude towards Trump, but the drawing will appear in the viewer's’ mind whenever the presidential election is mentioned. Sometimes, the cartoon might even influence the viewer to vote for Clinton instead of Donald Trump. Originating in the 19th century, political cartoons are created and drawn as a means to deliver a message. Whether it be about politics, events or social concerns, the artist is able to express themselves creatively. The cartoons are not only meant to express the view of the creator, but are also open to interpretation. Most political cartoons have a biased point of view and uses rhetoric to persuade its audience.

In each cartoon there was a judgmental point proven that the author was giving on how people judge things so quickly before they even analyze or think about the cartoon. People think the NRA is a bad thing and something to be against, but in reality it is an association that is protecting us. “Whack-a-Yankee” shows the many ways the northerners are trying to fight for freedom and the southern are just knocking them down. In “Get a Job” people can think the women is someone who can’t take care of the kids but really how do the readers know that is the mother and that is her kids. The man in the cartoon isn’t even looking at the women! People judge without even knowing other peoples lives. Gay marriage in New Jersey? The readers think it would be the people in New Jersey to allow the right of gay marriage and it turned out to be the complete opposite. That is why people can not assume things because half the time it is an incorrect assumption. Lastly in “The Hoodie”, Sorensen is trying to show readers how people misinterpret and judge people when someone is wearing a hoodie. Someone can not just jump into conclusion that if someone is wearing a hoodie violence could happen. No one should ever judge a book by its cover. Political movements, parties, and groups using propaganda to further their beliefs dates back to the eighteenth and nineteenth century. Though America faces an austere history, lighthearted propaganda colors its decades and gives them life. Since the times of the Persian Empires, propaganda has been an effective tool for forces of the State government, or other institutions trying to spread a political message, usually for militarily or humanitarian missions. In modern times, propaganda has taken a new face with the Internet, but during the 1940’s one of the most effective types of propaganda was the use of comic books. Currently comic books are used around the world to spread the message of peace, war, and even religion. For example, in Egypt a comic book is used to spread the word of Islam and what a true Muslim should act like in accordance to Allah. Catholic undertones are used in comic books to spread a message of Christianity to people in an interesting way, with bloody action. In Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Bosnian War, Superman was used to get out awareness of landmines to the people in affected areas. Comic Books are an effective form of propaganda because they are meant to be interesting, and the superheroes show people how they should be acting during times of strife. Throughout the history of comic books, they have been unifying and brought people together and light to certain messages for people from different countries, cultures, and ethnicities.
