Stereotype: A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. Have you ever stereotyped someone? Something? Anything? Taking a look at a visual argument that is made up of five cartoons that have to deal with different issues. Different issues but all rely on the same thing, stereotypes. Society has a tendency to make incorrect judgments of others based on various stereotypes that have been established over time.
To begin with our first visual argument, “Bicycle Gun Racks” created by Andy Singer. An association that many people do or do not know of, so in return they stereotype it. A black and white cartoon made up of a man that has guns and the American flag on the back of his bike, not a motorcycle

In each cartoon there was a judgmental point proven that the author was giving on how people judge things so quickly before they even analyze or think about the cartoon. People think the NRA is a bad thing and something to be against, but in reality it is an association that is protecting us. “Whack-a-Yankee” shows the many ways the northerners are trying to fight for freedom and the southern are just knocking them down. In “Get a Job” people can think the women is someone who can’t take care of the kids but really how do the readers know that is the mother and that is her kids. The man in the cartoon isn’t even looking at the women! People judge without even knowing other peoples lives. Gay marriage in New Jersey? The readers think it would be the people in New Jersey to allow the right of gay marriage and it turned out to be the complete opposite. That is why people can not assume things because half the time it is an incorrect assumption. Lastly in “The Hoodie”, Sorensen is trying to show readers how people misinterpret and judge people when someone is wearing a hoodie. Someone can not just jump into conclusion that if someone is wearing a hoodie violence could happen. No one should ever judge a book by its cover. People never know what someone is going through until the person has stepped into their
A stereotype is a group of attributes given to a group of people, most often hurtful and negative and not true.
I think that this political cartoon is biased because Jim probably created it because he seems to disagree with the government. He thinks the government should be under the authority of the NRA. The firearms should be in control rather than the NRA. In this cartoon, it describes the NRA holding a gun to the government's head, as the government is speaking out loud about how terrible to Aurora
Stereotypes are a form of prejudice everyone will once experience in their lifetime. Stereotypes are centered around an individual's race, gender, social class, religion, and age. They have been known to be elements people use to make judgments and subjectify people to one key feature. As Gordon Allport states, “ To state the matter technically, a noun abstracts from a concrete reality some one features and assembles different concrete realities only with respect to this one feature”(364). Mr.Allport’s words can be summed up to say stereotypes have been used as key fundamentals to associate one feature or aspect of a person with a group that represents it, typically in an unfavorable way.
Stereotypes are generalizations about a group of people whereby we attribute a defined set of characteristics to this group. These classifications can be positive or negative, such as when various nationalities are stereotyped as friendly or unfriendly.
Stereotype, someone who is regarded as embodying or conforming to a set image or type. This is the main component of the S.E. Hinton novel The Outsiders. The stereotypes in the novel are the Socs and the Greasers. The Socs are the rich kids who don’t have to work for anything, while the Greasers are the poorer kids who have very little. They both live in the city of Tulsa, one group on the Northside and one on the Southside. Outside of these boundaries no-one knows of them but the hatred for each other still plays on their minds.
Stereotyping is when a judgement is made on a group of people because of the actions of a few. Stereotyping happens because of misinformation and other people’s opinions.
A "stereotype" is a social perception of an individual in terms of group membership or physical attributes. Stereotypes are generalizations made about a group and then attributed to all members of that group.
A stereotype is “...a fixed, over generalised belief about a particular group or class of people.” (Cardwell, 1996).
What is a stereotype? In my definition it can be a term used to classify an object or thing, maybe even a person. A stereotype can be a person who has little knowledge of something or none at all. There are a lot of different stereotypes out there. For example, “White men can’t jump” is one used in sports such as basketball. This can be a stereotype to people who have never witnessed a white man dunk a basketball. Larry Bird was arguably one of the best basketball players in the history of the NBA with many awards and achievements to prove it. He was indeed a white man therefore, counterpointing the stereotypical phrase, “white men can't jump.” Just like this one, there are many stereotypes out there with a broad range of phrases or
The middle age American male is holding fast food and alcohol in his hands along with a cigarette in his mouth. The cartoon clearly stats statics of death related cause’s to the items the American male is consuming. This Cartoon is directed to the Average American because it shows how American people treat themselves with unhealthy living styles. The cartoon male was white but I believe race or ethnicity plays no factor in this cartoon, it is directed to the average American. The male cartoon is a made up character but is representing the average American. The choices of the rhetorical strategies designed to tailor the cartoon and its argument to its intended audience by showing that American’s are easily frightened by what the media reports and need to look at all the facts before letting the media control how you
According to Dictionary.com a stereotype is something conforming to a fixed or general pattern, especially an often oversimplified or biased mental picture held to characterize the typical individual of a group (dictionary.com).
This political cartoon was inspired by the controversial topic on gun control and how we need stricter laws on it. In the cartoon there is a man, whom, looks southern. It's ironic because they have a sign that says "We don't sell dangerous items" with a nail clipper and a pocket knife, yet in they are selling guns. There is some exaggeration because there is a little sign that says "We ID You have to be 18 to kill". There could be potential bias as this is a pro gun control cartoon. This can be helpful evidence to support my argument as well the opposing one since there is many key features being
