It is a Wednesday morning, about ten a.m., a distraught mother and father are in tears as they lay their child to rest in peace; their child who had turned one month old last week; their child who happened to be one of the thirty thousand whooping cough cases that resulted in death (National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases 1); their child who is no longer with them because of another parent’s choice not to vaccinate their child; a death that could have simply been avoided by a single vaccination. Since the general health is at risk due to vaccinations not being required, a mandatory law should be made requiring children to receive all necessary vaccinations.
A vaccine is a substance that is used to build the production of antibodies in order to provide immunity against specific types of diseases. A vaccine does its “magic” by first being inserted into the body; then, a form of the disease in the vaccine is fought in order for the antibodies to build up the immunity to the particular disease, without the individual contracting the disease itself. In India, when smallpox broke out, the blood from a survivor of the disease was rubbed in a cut on the skin of an uninfected person. An individual got infected with the disease but healed soon after. Throughout time, vaccinations have evolved through the work of scientists and doctors. In the 1700’s, Edward Jenner created the “vaccine” when he eliminated smallpox with cowpox. People were frightened of becoming a cow since the vaccination being inserted into their body contained a disease from a cow (Nova 1). Even though cowpox was completely harmless to the human body, people with strong religious views did not seem to think so. However, vaccinations have extremely improved from Jenner’s discovery.
