Visual Analysis 2: Context Moves Meaning Images are prominent everywhere in our world today, and are interpreted by each person who views them in a differing way. The reason individuals may view an image in a different way has to do with the context that it is viewed in. The context does not necessarily change the signs that an image displays, but instead leads to different signifiers and conclusions that can be drawn from those same signs. The drastic change that a different caption on the same photo can make in one’s comprehension and conclusions of an image and the meaning of it, presents how vital it is that an image is viewed in the context the author intended to achieve. The meaning of a image refers to what each person who reads the …show more content…
On the lighted area the blur is very noticeable and captures the hustle and bustle an urban centre tends to be associated with. This capturing of speed using blur is very similar to how an impressionist art motion was captured. The black area in the bottom third of the photo signifies the rural setting. Since this area is black, it is without the blur of the above area. The lack of motion in the lower area alludes to the ideology people have of the country regions being slow and simple. This slight variance in the image clarity between regions further asserts the message the photo sends to its audience. The caption ‘A Night to Remember’ helps create the idea of a night in the city and the memories that surround it. This photo would have been taken late in the night once the city lights were visible on the way into the city. The dark atmosphere and urban lights signify the night life of a city, including the bar and club scene. The idea of night life and entertainment fits with the caption and photo as one coming into the city would likely be driven to the bright lights, and unique experience the night clubs can offer especially since it isn't something people from small communities can …show more content…
These lights are secluded from the others, and the extent of the coverage from these lights is greater due to other lights not over powering them. The positioning of these lights in respect to the large cluster of lights tends to be in a position that Australia and New Zealand would be. The dark around these ‘nations’ would signify the surrounding ocean. Since these two nations are essentially islands, the positioning works well to capture the feeling of loneliness and separation being on a island tends to be associated with. The positioning of these two lights is also cause for one to feel a sense of unknown with these nations, as they are so distanced from the
It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words, but maybe they are worth far more than that. Pictures, although seemingly simple in nature, are extremely complex. Far too often, people overlook what a picture truly is. When a person looks at an image, they most likely see only the image, nothing else. Many people do not look deep enough into an image to fully comprehend the true meaning of it. However, when an individual begins to truly study an image in an attempt to understand the true complexity of it, they will be surprised at what they overlooked before. As stated by French Realist Painter, Gustave Courbet, “Fine art is knowledge made visible.”
Over the past few decades, enhancements in the visual fields have greatly improved, giving weight on the importance of visual material in text. Something that is more visually stimulating can usually make a text more convincing or credible. The term “seeing is believing” proves this fact. As humans, we tend to believe something if we can actually see it, which is why Jay David Bolter has referred to this phenomenon of the changed role of text and graphics as the “visual culture” in his book Writing Space. “Mere words no longer seemed adequate; they had to share their space with images.” (Bolter, 69).
The authors tell the reader that a picture must be interpreted like an essay or piece of writing. The motive and goal of the author or photographer must be figured out.
When analyzing the photos logos, I broke the image down into its foreground and background and noted how each obvious and subliminal element added to the depth and understanding of the over all message. Then I analyzed in one group the Ethos/Pathos and explained how finding the image on BuzzFeed helped us understand the intended audience therefore leading us to the correct understanding of the photo. The photograph breaks many down many stereotypes of your cliché geriatric couple and shines a whole new light on what it means to be
Although books full of words are more efficient in delivering and describing what the author feels, sometimes pictures can give a deep meaning depending on how they are organized. The Veil by Marjane Satrapi’s is a graphic novel that’s organized in a particular way, to deliver a certain message through the pictures. Marjane includes different sizes and frames that serve what she is thinking and feeling. Choosing certain sizes, frames and colours isn’t arbitrary. As each box increases in size, it means that she wants to emphasize the message behind that box, or show her relation to that particular text. Contrast is also one of the main elements that Marjane uses in her graphic novel. For example, on page five, there is a big picture of
Though the viewers focus first on the centered figures, it is easier to first analyze the surrounding settings to understand them. The stone wall foreground and the open fields of the background each embodies one of the girl’s thoughts. The back landscape is filled with warm, airy colors of blue and orange, as if it were under a bright sun. On the other hand, the foreground’s stone walls and concrete floor has dark, cold, shadowy, earthy colors that seem to appear as if under a stormy cloud. The sunny land suggests free, pure, spacious land previous to the industrialization. Yet, the darkened foreground due to the overcasting shadows resemble the currently dirty,
Vivid images can be found abundantly throughout the novel and helps to portray scenes to the point where the audience can actually imagine, smell, touch, and hear everything that is going on. “No matter how they scrubbed their hands, the residue of Red Hot Mama had a way of sticking round, as pesty and persistent as a chaperone at a high school dance.” (158). In some instances the audience can acquire a sense, based on the description whether the characters are self absorbed, considerate, or overly concerned about their appearance. “I ought to be shot for looking like this” she’d tell the mirror in the front hall before going out the door. “I look like I’ve been drug through hell backwards,” she would say on and ordinary day. “Like death warmed over. Like something the cat puked up.” (103). The emergence of the images presented in the novel can help present a better understanding and in some cases, a connection to one of the

People tend to views an image based on how society say it should be they tend to interpret the image on those assumption, but never their own assumptions. Susan Bordo and John Berger writes’ an argumentative essay in relation to how viewing images have an effect on the way we interpret images. Moreover, these arguments come into union to show what society plants into our minds acts itself out when viewing pictures. Both Susan Bordo and John Berger shows that based on assumptions this is what causes us to perceive an image in a certain way.
