Media messages influence us all in everyday decisions. After learning about the affect of emotions in perceptions, I realize that there have been so many media messages that have influenced me directly, whether I have realized it or not at that moment. I found one anti drunk driving campaign that is attempting to influence my choices regarding driving under the influence. I think that this overall problem of drink driving, and specifically this campaign, can relate back to three concepts we discussed in this course of negative emotions, sensation seeking, and the anticipatory affect. The striking campaign I found is from an article by hubpages.com, released this past January, that shows several photos for anti drunk driving campaigns. The particular image I chose, shows one toilet with a sign above it that reads, “Drunk behind a wheel could land you in between another two.” The toilet also has two wheels attached to it, therefore, making it resemble a wheelchair. Although this is a very simple photo, it had a profound affect on me when I saw it. Those simple words, along with that visual, spoke loudly. When viewing this photo, I experienced purely negative emotions. …show more content…
The anticipatory affect is defined in our notes as, “A feeling state experienced as one approaches a choice.” In my opinion, this certainly is related to the act of drunk driving, and any type of risky behavior. Specifically in this case, after drinking, knowing you are under the influence, and then deciding whether or not to get behind the wheel. Hopefully, after viewing a media message like this, people would be more likely to make the choice of not driving drunk, and the anticipatory affect would yield, again, those negative emotions of fear, sadness, anger, etc., that may end up potentially saving a
Advertisements posted on the website facesofdrunkdriving.com share multiple stories of people who were unexpectedly struck by drunk drivers. There was one story in particular that stood out to me more than the others and that was Jacqueline Saburido’s. This advertisement makes a powerful statement about how drunk driving can not only kill someone, but can also scar someone for life. The goal of the organization that posted this advertisement is to never drink and drive. It is not worth risking your life, someone else’s life, or putting anyone at risk of lifelong hardships and injuries. They present
How much longer will we be forced to endure the pain and atrocities due to the carelessness of drunk driving? Drunk driving has been a problem in the United States since the introduction of automobiles; however, it did not become an important social issue until the 1980’s. At that time the political atmosphere defined crime in terms of personal choice and individual responsibility. Drunk driving was defined as a problem located within individuals. Drunk driving is illegal in every state. It is not only illegal, but unsafe to operate an automobile if you are under the influence of alcohol.
The thought of alcohol being involved in fatal crashes brings about an emotional response. Recently, there has been a movement based on emotion rather than logic to change a certain drinking and driving law. This involves lowering the Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) from 0.10% to 0.08% nationwide. However, this attention is misdirected. By looking at my personal experiences, statistics, and current laws, it is clear that there is no need for lowering the BAC.
In the instance of drunk driving, the actions of the drunk driver are related to the safety of the drivers within their proximity and therefore affects not only the driver but others as well. Our previous moral experiences allow us to determine what the intentions of the drunk driver might be. Some drivers may choose to drive under the influence of alcohol because they have had an emergency that requires them to be at a certain place and they do not have the means to reach to their destination except for driving themselves. In this case, the context becomes complicated and intricate. However, if the driver is risking his own and other drivers’ safety, it becomes clear that their intentions are based on nonchalance and disregard for others.
Drunk driving is an issue that effects many people across our nation. People do not realize the affects alcohol can have on the body and mind that slow decision making while driving. This issue begins in the home. Children see their parents, or other adults figures, have a beer or a cocktail and get in the car. Thus, making it seem like it is acceptable to drink and drive. “One in three people will be involved in an alcohol-related crash in their lifetime” (MADD).
Driving under the influence has affected many people's lives and families. Today I would like to talk to you about the problems of drinking and driving, and why it is a concern for all of us. Driving under the influence is one of the most common and dangerous situations you can put yourself or someone else in. The fact is that drinking and driving is a huge deal and can leave a long trail of broken dreams and hearts. If you drink and drive, not only are you putting yourself at risk, but your passengers and the pedestrians outside of your vehicle. According to the most recent statistics by the National Commission Against Drunk Driving states that 17,000 Americans die each year in alcohol- related traffic crashes and 600,000 Americans
The facts are plain and simple, that alcohol and driving do not mix. About three in every ten Americans will be involved in an alcohol related crash at some time in their lives. Every single injury and death caused by drunk driving is totally preventable. To curb this national travesty, concerned Americans need to examine the problems, the effects, and the solutions to drunk driving. First of all, America has had a problem with drunk driving since Ford perfected the assembly line. Alcoholism is a problem in and of itself, but combined with driving can have a wide range of effects. The consequences of this reckless behavior can include a first time DUI or licenses suspension; a small fender bender, or worst of all a deadly crash. Most
“In the hands of an impaired driver, a vehicle becomes a murderous weapon.” ( ) Everyone can think of someone who has driven impaired, or even maybe you have done it yourself. The fact that one can think of someone who has driven impaired is a problem. Too many people are getting behind the wheel after drinking, smoking; or are not paying attention while they drive. Impaired driving continues to a problem although strides have been made to make a difference. There are many different types of impaired driving, each that have their own consequences. These types, and consequences will be explored in this essay.
People seem to get the wrong impression that alcohol is classified as a stimulant or “upper”, but in actuality alcohol is a depressant. The short term physical effects depend on the blood-alcohol level. It ranges from random changes in mood to complete lack of coordination, impaired vision, lack of balance and slurred speech. However, larger amounts of blood alcohol can strongly effect brain functioning and eventually cause a person to “black out”. In examining the thought process for drinking and driving behavior, Kulick and Rosenberg (1999) found that while the majority of their college student sample frequently drove after drinking, these students rationalized this behavior in a variety of ways. The most commonly found reasons for driving under the influence of alcohol were the strong desire to get to a specific destination (e.g., home), convincing oneself as being only slightly intoxicated, and/or believing
How could a man do this after being in a crash? He wasn’t even concerned about the vehicle hit and didn’t seem to care at all. Driving under the influence of alcohol is very dangerous. It can have a huge influence on your perspective and it can control your mind and cause you to do very stupid things. There are affects to the drunk drivers also. I am sure that there are some drunk drivers that very devastated and can’t live with themselves knowing that they killed someone. If I were to kill or injure some severely in a crash where I was driving under the influence, I would be very sad and could not live with myself. Drunk drivers are also affected by getting their license taken away and cannot get it back for a certain amount of time. The consequence for driving drunk will result in a 1 year revocation of your driving privilege. Not only are you risking your driving privilege if you drive drunk but you are also risking your life. If you have been drinking, there are many other ways to get home without driving. Some of these ways include, a friend that has not been drinking, a bus, train, or even walking
This experimental study is being done to better understand the effectiveness of anti-drinking and driving advertisements on university-aged students. “Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among 16 to 25 year olds, and alcohol and/or drugs are a factor in 55% of those crashes” (Madd, 2013). Increasing the effectiveness of anti-drinking and driving advertisements could be a solution to this critically high mortality rate in young people. The main purpose of this study is to better understand the effect of positive and negative anti-drinking and driving advertisements within different settings and different amounts of times.
Each year numerous lives are lost due to careless and irrational driving. The disregard for safe driving has been a predicament to the United States of America for years. Many years Police have relied heavily on speed cameras, breathalyzer tests and heavy fines as a deterrent against unlawful drivers. Over the years fatality rates have increased, so the Department of Transportation and Highway Safety has composed a series of safe driving campaigns. On many occasions the Transportation Department informs and advises the public about the importance of responsible driving. They propagate safe driving through the various channels of the media and
Drunk driving is an epidemic that continues to have severe and life threatening consequences for those involved, if we simply take a few steps against drunk driving we can help decrease this epidemic.
The purpose of my paper is to promote the effects of drinking and driving. To research my information, I used internet sources.
The advertisement, "The 'It's Only Another Beer' Black and Tan' tries to relate to the older audience through relatable events or substances that may result in a drunk-driving accident. The recipe list of alcohol, events, and people creates a series of mental images of how choices and events involving alcohol may result. The end result of this advertisement is a totaled vehicle. The imagery of a totaled car may lead the audience's imagination to go beyond and think of the passengers within the car as well as whom and what else the drunk driver may have also crashed into. This advertisement is effective in deterring people from driving under the influence as it creates a mental impact and opens up to critical thinking during drinking events.
