Oberon says “When I have the juice of that flower, I’ll trickle some drops of it in on Titania eyes while she’s while she is sleeping. She’ll fall madly in love with the first thing she sees when she wakes up-- even if its a lion, a bear, a wolf, a bull, a monkey, or an ape.” Oberon came up with a plan, he decided to make his wife fall in love with an ugly and disgusting animal or beast just so he could get revenge and get the small Indian boy from Titania. Oberon is willing to hurt his wife just to get his way and what he wants. In the end, he did get the Indian boy, but he and his wife also reconnected, he did not expect this nor wanted it to happen. Oberon’s controlling behavior resulted in her forgiving him and wanting to
First, Hermia went through many different issues and conflicts throughout the story. Hermia was put in the situation of being forced to marry either Lysander or Demetrius. They both loved Hermia, but Hermia only loves Lysander and despises Demetrius. Egues comes to the decision of Hermia marrying Demetrius. Hermia states “If then true lovers have been ever cross'd,It stands as an edict in
The mood immediately changes and we discover that Hermia rather than being filled with filial love is determined to marry Lysander rather than her father’s choice for her. And so the love theme is made more complex as we
Hermia was not going to give up her growing passion and desire for Lysander. She decided to run off into the woods with Lysander and get married.
Oberon conjures up a plan in order to get a young child away from Titania, queen of the fairies, whilst doing this he is met with two of our other characters, Helena and Demetrius, “A sweet Athenian lady is in love/ with a huge disdainful youth. Anoint his eyes with the flower as well,” (II.i.268-269) in this point of the story Oberon encounters Helena who is trying to get the attention of Demetrius, who is completely ignoring her. This displays his need to place forceful authority because he is trying to controls Demetrius’s love, by putting him under a spell and making him fall in love with Helena. Unlike Egeus though, Oberon takes control over more than just one character, we see this in act 2 scene 1 lines 83-85 which says “Having once this juice,/ I’ll watch Titania when she is asleep/ And drop the liquor of it in her eyes,” out of the two Oberon would have to be the most controlling, because he in these three lines it shows yet another character Oberon is controlling. In this line though he is attempting to manipulate Titania in order to get the young changeling boy. Thereupon showing that in the face of love, control still will not
In “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” characters who exhibit selfish behaviours build unhealthy relationships. To begin, Helena creates several difficulties as a result of her selfishness and envy of Hermia’s prosperity. Correspondingly, Oberon and Titania face conflicts concerning control. Finally, Egeus and Hermia’s strong sense of pride make them struggle to cooperate. For these reasons, relationships are made fragile due to desire of self-gain.
Exerting the type of power that is influenced by malicious intentions can cause one to make decisions that are not beneficial to others. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is written within a time period and setting that favors men instead of woman. In other words, men have all the authority to control the events that occur in their own lives as well as the lives of others whom are considered insignificant. The plot displays the catalysts that ignite many characters’ desire for control that is misused by higher status people. Shakespeare’s use of characterization demonstrates how the wanting of control causes the characters to act irrationally through the misuse of power. Shakespeare’s use of setting, plot and characterization causes the ordeals
Have you ever been pulled over by a police officer? Or been told what to do by a boss at work? If you have and you do what the person asks then that person has succeeded in controlling you. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare, control is a major theme. Within this play there are many characters that are able to control others and there are people that are controlled. The play is about Hermia, an Athenian lady, who wants to marry her true love, Lysander, but can not because her father is forcing her to marry a man she doesn’t love. Another manipulative character in this play is Oberon, the Fairy King. He puts a magic love spell on three of the characters throughout the play. A character
A Midsummer Night’s Dream Control Control is having the power to direct someone’s behavior or the way events happen. In the classic play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by: William Shakespeare, many characters want to be in charge of one another. It never ends up working well. An example of this would be when Demetrius tries to control Helena because he doesn’t like her. No matter how hard he tries Helena still loves him.
Things do not usually go well when one person tries to control another person’s life. The play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream was written by the playwright, William Shakespeare in the late 1500’s and takes place in Ancient Athens. Shakespeare displays many examples of the theme, do not try to control other people’s lives throughout his play. For example, Egeus, Hermia’s father, tries to control who Hermia marries. “A sweet Athenian lady is in love
Hermia went to her beau Lysander and told him her problem. He said to run away from her father's house and go to his aunt's house so that he could marry her there. His aunt's house was far away from Athens. Hermia did not have to be killed for not marrying Demetrius there. Lysander said that he would meet Hermia in the wood that was away from the city.
So Hermia's father Egeus takes her to the King of the land who informs Hermia that she has a certain amount of time to either accept marriage with Demetrius or 1. never get married or 2. get executed. So Hermia and Lysander plan to abandon the kingdom to get married
Egeus tries to make Hermia marry someone that she doesnt love. If she rebels, he will have her killed. Hermia and Demetrius are two lovers that are being forced to love and marry each other, but the feeling isn’t mutual. Egeus wants Hermia, his daughter, to marry a man she does not love. The consequences of her rebellion results in death.
In the play the reader gets the truth that Hermia’s father wants her to marry Demetrius, and as a woman living in a patriarchal society, she must obey; at least that is what the reader is lead to believe. Hermia takes a stand for herself and becomes powerless in her love for Lysander. With no reasonable explanation, besides her love for Lysander, she defiantly denies her father’s attempt for an arranged marriage. Since their love for each other is so immense, they prepare for the underlying bad circumstances they are going to suffer from for not obeying the wishes of her father. Hermia’s love for Lysander means so much more to her than the property or social placeholder she would gain by marrying Demetrius. Hermia dedicates herself to Lysander, saying he is worthy of the ultimate consummation of her love. She must convince her father that Demetrius is disgraceful and immoral. At the end of the play, Hermia and Lysander are eloped, and unlike Katherine and Petruccio in TOS, they demonstrate their dedication for each other from the beginning, disregarding a few
Sometimes people try to control other people. In William Shakespeare’s play, a midsummer night’s dream, Titania and Oberon are married. Titania is trying to get Oberon to go to the wedding with her and Oberon is trying to get Titania to give him something he wants. Oberon wants to control Titania. Titania has an Indian boy left to her by one of her worshipers.
This demonstrates how there is money and power involved in the story. Egeus, Hermia’s father, removes all of her power. Egeus has her power and controls his daughter, Hermia. In the story, Egeus arranges her marriage with someone whom she doesn’t love, and he doesn’t let her marry who she loves, Lysander. Not only that, but also shows how money also is being used in the story.
