Corruption In Animal Farm

In George Orwell’s Novel, Animal Farm, Old Major delivers a speech to the animals on the farm. Major preaches on how the humans are weak, selfish, lazy thieves who steal from the farm animals. Lecturing on banning together and rebelling against the humans, Old Major uses pathos, ethos, asyndetons, and imagery to help sparks an uproar amongst the animals. Major uses these strategies to engage and convince them of who the real enemy is.

In the popular book, Animal Farm, by George Orwell, a pig named Old Major makes a speech to all of the barn animals. Old Major feels that humans are the root of all of the animals suffering and so he gives a speech to the animals to convince them of this. In his speech, Old Major uses logos, pathos and figurative language to engage his audience and persuade the animals to rebel.

In the allegorical novel Animal Farm by George Orwell, the aging pig Old Major speaks to all the animals on the farm, making a stirring speech calling them to arms. He tells them that Man is the enemy, and a rebellion is inevitable.His clever use of rhetorical devices such as appeal to ethos, rhetorical questions, among many others, is what makes his speech so effective.

At the start of the story, the animals of Manor Farm begin to comprehend that their means of existence is to slave away to the needs of Mr. Jones or man in general. They then make a successful attempt to take over the farm in a rebellion. However, later on in the story they were able to slip back into the grasp of oppression since the pigs become corrupt due to their high position of power in the farm. The pigs are so blinded by greed that they don’t even bother to see how much the animals are suffering. At the end, the pigs are now the new Mr. Jones and so closely resemble man that the rest of the animals cannot even tell the difference between them. Showing the reader that one of the main themes that Animal Farm contains is the abuse of power with language.

Jones. When giving a speech to the animals Old Major says, “The life of an animal is misery and slavery: that is the plain truth”(Orwell 7). This illustrates how unhappy the animals are with the way that they are being treated. They are fed the bare minimum, and are enslaved to work for Mr. Jones against their will. Later when Old Major is speaking to the animals he says, “That is my message to you, comrades: Rebellion!”(Orwell 9). This demonstrates how the animals are considering rebellion. They are planning on rebelling against Mr. Jones to gain back their freedom. The animals were fighting Mr. Jones and the neighboring farmers when, “all the sheep... rushed forward and prodded and butted the men from every side”(Orwell 41). The animals were trying to keep the farmers from taking back the farm. In doing so, they were sacrificing their safety in order to keep the freedom they fought for earlier in the book. To conclude, the animals had to fight in order to gain their freedom from Mr. Jones.

"Remember also that in fighting against Man, we must not come to resemble him,” is something that Old Major says after he tells the other animals of the dream he had the night before. This event causes a chain reaction in the book Animal Farm. Old Major shares some excellent ideas but he passes away before he can see them carried out, and when they are, they do not go the way he had planned them in the first place. He is in a way, like Karl Marx, the founder of Communism, the two both have ideas for a new world but as time goes on and new people come into power the basic principles of Communism and Animalism are soon forgotten.

One factor of revolution listed by Britton that takes place on the farm is “All social classes are discontented.” Old Major’s speech highlights the reasons for all the animals’ dissatisfaction, as they feel that they are treated unfairly for the labor that they do. Major asked all the animals in the barn “‘What is the nature of this life of ours?’” and they all had the same thought. “‘Let’s face it: our lives are miserable, laborious, and short.’”
