During the time of corruption in the Catholic Church, Protestantism was growing because of the influences of politics, corruption within the Catholic Church, and Renaissance ideas. Many Catholics were unhappy with the Catholic Church because of all the corruption in the church, and they wanted reformation. The Catholic Church wouldn’t be able to stop the growth of Protestantism. One of the reasons Protestantism spread was because of the influence of politics, such as support from princes and the Treaty of Augsburg. When Luther began to break from the Catholic Church, “He called upon the German princes to overthrow the papacy in Germany and establish a reformed German church.” (438) This is the reason the German princes started to support the spread of Protestantism. The rulers of Germany were motivated by any religious feeling which made them take control of the churches in their territory. This made the princes/rulers have the last say in any decisions not the Pope. Religious warfare in Germany ended with the Treaty of Augsburg. Martin Luther made these problems obvious when he nailed his 95 theses to the church doors. In Luther’s 95 theses, he attacked the selling and buying of indulgences, absenteeism, simony, and pluralism. All of the problems lead to corruption, and the corruption lead to people changing over to Protestantism. The Protestant teaching was justification by faith alone, salvation comes only through faith in Christ not good works. Buying a slip of paper is not the way to get into Heaven. There was corruption with the Popes in the 1520’s. The Popes were spending too much money on Renaissance Art and Architecture to make the church look good.
