Cosmetology Career Research Paper

There is a wealth of opportunities for students interested in cosmetology, and specifically those interested in hair. There are career opportunities for people interested in the science, the health, and the aesthetics of human hair. Of the many career opportunities available, the three of focus for this paper will be a hair stylist in the film and/or fashion industry; a cosmetic scientist that specializes in hair; and the executive producer of an international hair show.

Hair Stylists are considered the happiest at work out of all the professions. The career as a Hair Stylist is very helpful, because you help out people not just physically but also emotionally. The research will describe the career as a Hair Stylist, what is required to become a successful Hair Stylist, and the impact this career has on society.

Full-time versus part-time-- Typically cosmetologists and hairdressers can work a small number of hours per week or as many hours as they choose. Some hairdressers and cosmetologists work about 40 hours per week. However about one-third of cosmetologists work part-time. A cosmetologist may have to work on the weekends and during the evenings. Most hairdressers and cosmetologists work in beauty salons however they also work in hotels department stores cruise ships resorts and day spas. Many hairdressers and cosmetologists own a salon. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports about 48 percent of cosmetology workers are self-employed (Live). People who own their own salon will typically have longer hours than their employees. Some salons will let cosmetologist rent a section of the salon for a certain price, so they are their own boss. Most people get into cosmetology because they like making people feel good about themselves. A student that graduated from Fullerton College said, “I love when a client looks in a mirror and is brought to tears because she did not know she could look so beautiful, that's why I do my job, it is extremely gratifying to realize I am responsible for making someone feel better about themselves after leaving my chair.” Hairdressers and cosmetologists often build a friendship connection with their client, some clients use appointments to relax and unwind and see their stylist as a friend for an hour.

According to American Fact Finder, there are roughly 600,000 to 750,000 hairdressers in the world, not including those who are self-employed. A hairdresser is someone that provides cutting, styling, dyeing, washing, and a variety of other things to your hair. They will do exactly what you tell them to do, and can do as little as just a short trim, to dyeing your head a crazy color. They often work in salons, spas, barber shops, sometimes work from home, or they can even travel to their clients if they are well known by celebrities. They have the opportunity to meet new people everyday, and often have flexible schedules. Many people who decide to join this career are often very creative and passionate about what they do. The field of cosmetology is a field consisting of the maintenance and beautification of people's hair, face, skin and nails.
