Located ten degrees north of the equator Costa Rica is in the tropics and even though it is a small country it has a very diverse landscape and a variety of weather as well. One unusual aspect of Costa Rica is that the country has no army and instead of a national hero being a general it is a young barefoot campesino (farmer). We ate at a restaurant there in which the owner made ox carts. He did all of the woodwork using hydroelectricity with a waterwheel in the back. They were all also hand painted and hand carved pieces. It was very beautiful. We finally got to Turriabla that night. The next day we went to the college and botanical gardens of CATIE. In the botanical gardens we got to try all of the different fruits grown in Costa Rica. They are all very good and different tasting. Even the mangos and pineapples taste so much better there. Now that we are back I dislike the ones here. One example of something we tried there was called the miracle fruit. It made anything you ate afterwards that was sour taste sweet and it actually worked. We toured the coffee plantation there as well as the college campus and had more traditional Costa Rican food in the cafeteria there. Finally, in Turriabla we went to a fruit market and an ice cream shop and practiced our Spanish. We then prepared for our third stop.

According to the world History, Spanish and Portuguese were the first Europeans who arrived in Latin America, establishing colonial societies in the 16th century. Before these two empires seized power in Latin America, there were different types of civilizations namely Maya, Aztec and Inca civilizations. “Estas flores aqui es Guaria Morada” he said pointing to a pink flower growing on the side of the path we were walking on. He was saying that it was the Guaria Morada, the national flower of Costa Rica. Alejandro also pointed the different trees out to us. The larger ones were Quanacaste, and most of the smaller ones were Costa Rican native trees that weren’t popular and almost extinct. While he was talking, a bright green frog jumped onto the tree he was talking about.

Since the late 1990s, tourism has been the second largest source of dollars, after bananas.
