Courage is a necessity to overcome fears and achieve a desired goal. Fear is something that exists in all of us. There is no hero or any particular courageous figure that is without fear. Being fearless is not required to be courageous, one simply has to look past or overcome their fears to possess this great quality. When overcoming fears and going against the norm, there are always risks involved. There are different types of risks that come about. Someone could risk life or limb, while others risk their reputation. Either risk is serious enough that a person must have courage to endure that particular risk. Courage can occur anytime, anywhere, and often in our everyday lives. Everyone will experience courage no matter how young, …show more content…
"The agent told me to be sure and keep my people away, as they were very poorly dressed. I did not do as I was told."(298) Even though it took some time, she eventually overcame her fear and her feelings of inferiority and stood up to Father Wilbur and the other white men. There are many risks involved when a person comes in contact with courage. A person's peers or the people close to them can be highly judgmental, especially if what you are doing clashes with common beliefs or behaviors. This stands very true when looking at the life of Martin Luther King Jr. His peers were not only the African American population, but also white upper-class clergymen. In the first line of Martin Luther King Junior's letter to the clergymen he states that he is "confined here in the Birmingham City Jail."(303) Dr. King took a great risk of being judged, solely by writing a letter to his peers. He knew that the clergymen already had their own ideas about him, but he took an even bigger risk by writing them from his jail cell. Another major risk that people take while being courageous is risking their life for the lives of others. In "And the Band Played On," Randy Shilts tells the story of a young female doctor, Grethe Rask, who risked her life because she worked in a clinic that didn't even provide the " basics [such] as sterile rubber gloves or disposable needles."(330) He goes on to describe even more horrifying details about
Instead of being afraid, be courageous and do not let fear affect difficult decisions. Courage is a choice everyone must make to overcome challenges. Though being courageous is hard, it always pays off. Even though it's easy to be scared, true courage is overcoming that fear. One example of overcoming fear is “The Ravine” by Graham Salisbury, in which a young boy named Vinny shows great courage by overcoming his fear of being bullied and standing up to peer pressure from his friends.
Courage is a cardinal virtue every human being needs. Courage is doing something frightening you are for the right being even if you are alone in your belief. Many regular humans have used courage also. For example Dr. Martin Luther King jr. stood up for all African Americans, even though almost everyone did not agree with him. He eventually helped end segregation by raising awareness. Sadly, Dr. Martin Luther King jr. was killed just for his beliefs. Today we celebrate a holiday for his great bravery. Bravery is a synonym of courage.
To many people, to have courage means to be able to face any difficulty, hardship, or even danger without having any fear. Those that display courage are not always the heroes or leaders in stories but, are sometimes the characters that end up showing the most astonishing amounts of growth throughout a storyline. Often, traits such as courage are used to tell stories and inspire those who wish to make a difference in the world. Once they find a drive or a situation where the risk is pretty much even to the reward, they choose that that will do anything to for either the common good or for their own personal benefit. No matter the perspective of the situation, courage will always be one of the most powerful forces that can be found within.
Courage is having fear, and being able to confront that fear, there cannot be courage without fear. The heart will start to race faster as fear is coming into where it is. The way to stop it in its tracks is to confront that fear and have totally mentally focus of confronting and beating that fear. There is no need to be courageous if there isn’t anything to be afraid of something. Luckily, People are afraid of plenty of things throughout the course of their days and live. People wouldn’t be human if they weren’t.
Courage is everywhere, even if it’s not known worldwide. As for in Madeleine L’Engle’s ‘A Wrinkle in Time’, courage is considered to be exceptionally significant as it raises the awareness to trust in the people close to you. Everyone doubts themselves at a point in their life, but overcoming that unresolved issue with yourself is important. Sometimes just staying true to yourself is the best thing you can do, just as Meg held on to her father and believed with all her heart that he’s still out there and will come back to their family even as all hope seemed lost. That indicated Meg being a strong hearted person. Meg was courageous when she trusted her friends, even when the situation was turning against their favour most of the time. This
We all have opportunities to display courage in our life, but if we actually do is our decision. Courage is being able to do what is right even if it can be hard. In the book Speak by Laurie Halle Anderson I found three different examples of courage. In this book Melinda Sordino, David Petrakis and Melinda, again all show courage.
At Least everybody in this world can be courageous. Everybody has been courageous in some way. Courage can happen any day, any time without anyone even realizing it. People often think courage is standing up for oneself or helping someone out of home or school, and it can be, but courage can be as simple as doing something you're afraid to do and then faces your fears and doing it. Characters like Anne Frank from Diary of Anne Frank, the man from Giving and the boy from The Porcelain Unicorn.
In the literary work, Speaking of Courage, Tim O’Brien highlights the trying struggle of a post-war solider attempting desperately to integrate himself back into American society. Paul Berlin’s trials and tribulations exemplify the “dominance of a citizen culture in the United States,” as mentioned by Dr. Decker in class. American society does not allow for the soldiers we have sent off to fight to return as warriors.
“Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear.” - Mark Twain. To be courageous means being a risk-taker and standing up for what one believe in. One must not let fear stop them from overcoming an obstacle. Courage is the ability to act on one's beliefs despite the dangers or disapproval. Courage shows when one acts on their beliefs whether someone feels that it’s right or wrong. Being courageous means to have the ability to face a fear, pain, or a difficult challenge. It means to conquer fear. Three great examples of bravery and heroism was shown in the Civil Rights Movement by Rosa Parks, in World War 2 by the Monuments Men and Robert M. Edsel, and by former First Lady, Michelle Obama. Their involvement in the world set the bar for people on why having courage is important and what it means to me.
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” ~ Winston Churchill. This quote defines what it is to be courageous, to be courageous is to persevere even if you know you will fail. This kind of courage is the courage which both Harold Crick in Stranger Than Fiction and Jean Louise “Scout” Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird. In Stranger Than Fiction, an IRS agent, Harold Crick, with a monotonous life learns that you must not only survive, but you must truly live. This lesson is taught through a series of events that lead to his breaking out of his shell and truly living his life. The events are preliminarily put into action through Harold hearing the voice of the author of a book about his life. In To Kill A Mockingbird, a tomboyish six-year-old, Jean Louise “Scout” Finch, discovers the true meaning of camaraderie and bravery. Her friendships are strong but her definition of courage is flawed. In the end, she realizes a great truth, that to really know someone, you have to imagine yourself in their shoes. Courage is important to these two characters, as they both discover what it really means to be brave and what the true definition of courage is. Courage is not always outspoken, sometimes courage is knowing that you will fail, but trying and failing anyway and then accepting your failure.
Depending on the person, the idea of courage has many different meanings. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird's, the definition of courage is “when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do” (149). The novels definition explains that one needs to do the right thing even if one doesn’t win.
Most people define courage as a dangerous physical act to defend from others, but Atticus Finch shows it from a whole new different perspective. Atticus represents many types of courage and bravery in To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus not only exemplifies a stern yet fair attitude towards Jem and Scout, but he also shows this mindset at the courtroom. He reveals bravery from the start of the novel, all the way to the finish. During the course of the novel, Atticus displays many examples of courage.
“Courage is not the absence of fear is the ability to act in the presence of fear.”This quote explains that it is an act of bravery when you do something that helpful or valuable to you even if you are afraid doing it. For instance risking your life to stand up for something that you care about or that you believe.
My father he faced difficulties and pain so, I shouldn’t suffer in future like he suffer to study. Someone to fit the definition or title to be called courageous he or she should do something that pushes them out of their comfort zone. Dreaming about something and doing nothing is not because you are afraid that it is wrong is not courage. Therefore, when person a is determine to face what comes next, and is ready to accept the consequences is courage. Like when my younger sister died and my father was in Delhi airport when he got the news that he lost his 1.5 years old daughter. But, he felt sorry that he lost one daughter because he couldn’t save her. On The other side he showed couraged and decide not to let that happen again with his other kids. So, he worked most of the time and faced difficulties alone, so his kids shouldn’t suffer. Courage doesn’t means facing fear or difficulties it means accepting what is happening and not
What does the word courageous mean? Has anyone ever called you courageous? I think it means to be brave and to do what you belive and never let anyone talk you out of it. Also to make a good change. What do you think?
