Covenant 35th Anniversary Book Events From festivals and fetes, to camps, productions, BBQ lunches and graduations, events have brought the Covenant community together for 35 years. When the school began, our Oranges and Blankets events allowed likeminded people in the Geelong region to meet and fundraise for the school. Very much a neighbourhood event, our fetes would work two fold to establish the sense of community we now enjoy today and fundraise for a school just getting its feet off the ground. Because the vision for Covenant began among a group of friends in a living room, the life of the school naturally became an extension of the home. Our Ladies Auxiliary, Parents and Friends; and Board would all play different roles in establishing …show more content…
This gave new families the opportunity to join the thriving community and feel like they belonged. Many of these families also volunteered their time at the Covenant. Long term members of the school community will recall the day’s volunteers took care of everything from the cleaning and maintenance to the bus runs. We know Covenant was established as Geelong’s first Parent Controlled School, and the corresponding focus on cultivating authentic relationships has enabled us to grow and expand our borders over the past four decades. Many of us feel an ownership of Covenant, and it holds a dear place in our hearts. The sacrifice and love of the school community, driven by a passion for the mission and vision of Covenant, means the school is unique and provides an invaluable service to the wider Geelong community. School fetes have always been a highlight in Covenant life. Held every 2- 3 years, they were used as a fundraiser in our early years. Relying heavily on the time and skills of parents; sausages and oranges were enjoyed by many as students and locals enjoyed the comradery that came with festival rides, croquet, performances and fun. Today our fetes have developed into something much larger, and staff and parents put together a terrific weekend inviting people all over the region to get a taste for the life of …show more content…
A relaxed and enjoyable evening, students are able to dance with a fellow student or invite a friend from out of school as they show off their ballroom dancing skills. Karen Feldman’s expertise is invaluable as our students learn something new and have a night for themselves. Today our MPC is used as a venue for off-site dance lessons for people of all ages, and many years ago the school even offered dancing lessons. In fact, chances are there are some members of the school community who remember being taught the fine art of ballroom dance under the watchful eye of John
The community organization my group chose to research in Champaign County was the Don Moyer Boys & Girls Club. I will begin with a description of the Don Moyer Boys & Girls Club including the history of the organization as well as the activities that take place at the club. I will then talk about the role that that Don Moyer plays in the Champaign-Urbana community that was learned through an interview with Ray Pratt who is current Director of Finance at Don Moyer. Being that I am familiar with the Boys & Girls Club organizations both in Champaign and Chicago, I will share how I have connected with the organizations within the past few years. Being that the organization was founded to improve certain communities, I will explain how the activities
Busch Middle School of Character had a wonderful sense of community, each student, instructor, and family, made sure they were doing their part. I believe it’s important for educators to understand the needs of the families and community of their students because the more resources the better. When schools actively involve parents
We are a school where the joy of discovery inspires serious study, social responsibility, and strong faith. Founded by the Sisters of Mercy and conducted in partnership with lay faculty, Waldron Mercy is a Catholic co-educational school serving preschool through grade eight. Grounded in the rich history of Merion Mercy Academy for Girls and Waldron Academy for Boys, Waldron Mercy Academy enables students to become both capable and discerning adults. We strive to increase our students' awareness of the need for responsible membership and leadership in the global family.” From this mission statement, I have concluded three things. At Waldron, academics are taken very seriously and is meant to enrich and prepared the children for high school level learning. Despite, the importance of academics in Waldron, I feel it is not the main focus. At the end of the day, Waldron strives for their students to become well rounded individuals, who serve the world even after they leave Waldron. Finally, Waldron also emphasizes that faith is an important factor of a student. In fact, a life enriched in faith should lead a student to serve others in their community and globally.Without a doubt, the mission statement reveals that Waldron focuses on several aspects of life that
The Junior Civitans Club is a community service organization that I have been a member of throughout my high school career. I participated in three Relay for Life walks for life, and helped to raise hundreds of dollars for the Relay for Life cancer research campaign. In my Sophomore and Junior years, I was elected to be on the Leadership committee as a Representative and later a Secretary. This year, I was elected President of the club and preside over all meetings and service projects. The Greenwood High School chapter of Junior Civitans “adopted” a girl’s cottage at the Connie Maxwell Children’s Home this school year. The Connie Maxwell Children’s home provides residential children’s ministry to abused, abandoned, and neglected children.
On Monday, September 28th, we visited the YMCA. We went into their conference room where we set up the computer and the projector. Finally when the teens arrived, we presented a short PowerPoint about community service and a few ideas for this event. We then broke off into two groups to get to know the kids a
The Boston Baptist Church youth group has been one that has thrived in the past years as it reached out to the community at large and attracted youth to it’s programs. In the past year, other churches in the community have decided to reschedule their youth group meeting times to the same time as the Boston youth group. As a result, the population of the youth group has dwindled to an average of five to six youth in attendance. It is interesting to note that the most consistent attendees are ones from the community instead of the church, which is because the church does not have an abundance of youth in the congregation. While this group is very small, every third month there is an opportunity for youth groups in the area to combine and come together for a program called Hive. This program allows for the youth to meet others in the area, have a great time and to support each other in Christ. There are also special events within the Boston youth group once every month where they will go ice skating, go on a hike or something else similar. The goal of this proposal is to; present a plan where we are able to focus on the spiritual growth of the youth and to focus on how we can reach out to the youth in the community.
The School of LSA and all of its qualities has the potential to be not a simple school I attend, but a home – a family to call my own, and a community of the leaders and the
Every year, The Barn Wesley Foundation provides us with the amazing opportunity to experience a connection with God at Timber Creek Camp. We are blessed to enjoy three days at the camp and share a unique, bonding moment with all of our peers from Perkinston and many students from other colleges who also attend the event. I have been able to attend this event twice, and each time has proven to be a wonderful adventure, helping each and every one of us surpass our difficulties and leave our burdens on Christ.
For the past 12 weeks, it has been a blessing to be with an organization such as the Methodist Home and witness it providing nourishment and life to its body and the body of Christ. Daily for over 100 years the Methodist Home has been helping children and families. As I reflect on my time at the Methodist Home, I am reminded of a passage where Jesus states “Let the children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these the kingdom of God belongs.” In adhering to Jesus’ command the Methodist Home zealously advocates for the best interest of the children it serves. I am amazed at how the Methodist Home, despite lack of funding and budgetary cuts, is able to utilize the legislative process, engage in rigorous employee and foster/adoptive
Lancaster’s motivation behind the monitorial schools was to give all youth regardless of socio-economic status equal opportunity to a basic education. Another big appeal of
Our team of school administrators, volunteers, and student ambassadors has been working since May of 2016 to develop ideas for this event. A great deal of thought and planning has gone into the process of organizing our ideas and bringing them to fruition. We decided that
(Bredekamp, 2009). I will show the parent that we can be in harmony in the program and with the family’s values. I need to take away the feeling that I am right and they are wrong and I need to see that neither one of us are right or wrong. I need to see that we are learning and trying to help their child to grow, learn and develop. (Bredekamp, 2009). The role of our local community is to provide a physical, emotional, and cognitive environment that helps in the development and learning of the child. We with community will build a foundation that is consistent, positive, and caring relationships with adults and children. (Bredekamp, 2009). We will build that relationship with teachers and children and families and teachers. We as community it is our responsibility to contribute to the well-being and learning of the child. I will get the child involved in the community and their families because it helps them to learn about themselves and the world around them. The community involved in my school helps children respect and be able to acknowledge their differences. I as a teacher will develop responsibility and help with self-regulation with the
Just as Wesley chose to meet the everyday people in their own context, so too should The Porch’s availability meet the everyday people in the community and not base itself on the availability of the congregation. For this particular context, 5:00-7:00 PM is the most viable time frame in terms of reaching a vast majority of the community. This time frame allows people and their families to receive a meal and choice of small group discussion without exhausting any children attending The Porch. Holding the event weekly on Wednesday nights will allow for better continuity when compared to once or twice per month. Additionally, Wednesday nights are understood to have less athletic and extra-curricular events for school-aged children and youth then other nights during the week. The Porch’s availability
The Festival of Trees is an annual event held the week of Thanksgiving at the Rochester Civic Theater. The main purpose of this event to raise money for Hiawatha Homes of which provides support for children and adults with disabilities. Individuals volunteer to design and decorate a tree; the trees are then available for purchase by local business owners at a gala event. Working for a charity event is hard work and yet rewarding. One of my friends, Lauren, has been donating her time and talent to the Festival of Trees for several years along with a few of her family members. I had the pleasure of talking with her recently about her personal experiences and background with this annual charity event.
This year Avila had the pleasure of being a part in fighting poverty. Interestingly enough it wasn’t a traditional way of donations. Companies such as FINCA and KIVA have found a new way of giving to those in need. They decided to give out loans to people across the world, who suffer financially. As a part of our first year project this year’s freshmen were able to be a part in giving out these loans to both individuals and families in need. This money came from us selling t-shirts and various donations
