Sociology of Max Weber This essay is a critical analysis of the theories given by Max Weber of leadership, religion and rationalization.
Just like Marx, Max Weber is a German sociologist and philosopher and his ideas have always influenced the society in many ways. He is referred to as one of the founding fathers of modern sociology. He has given many ground breaking theories like theory of bureaucracy and theory of social class. His theories are important because he helped us to understand the nature of society. He disagreed with the Marxian understanding of class and Auguste Comte's theory of positivism.

Rationalization is the most general element of Weber's theory. As per this theory, Weber saw the modern society as a growing rationalized society. People were moving away from the traditional beliefs which were based on superstitions, custom and religion. More and more people now started engaging in rational and instrumental calculations. This led to the development of science, modern technology and bureaucracy. Bureaucracy was regarded as an example of rationality by Weber. A capitalist society has more bureaucracy which leads to it being more rationalized. This happens because in a capitalist society you need bureaucracy at all levels as you need to make sure you are managing the society well. The more advanced the society becomes, more the laws develop. But at the same time Weber believed that rationalization is an iron cage. The reasons are pretty obvious. This authority rests on the appeal of the leader. At the same time this form of authority has its own drawbacks. It is unstable and it deteriorates if the leader is unable to bring about the changes he promised to bring. This is what we concluded from the case study by Rakesh Khurana as well. John McCoy, the CEO of Bank One was a very charismatic leader. He brought about a huge change in the Bank's financial and economic position. His attitude helped the bank to expand and take over First Chicago. But as and when McCoy's attitude changed, people saw a change in the services of Bank One which had started faltering. His laid-back attitude finally led to his removal from the post of CEO by his own board of members.
Rational legal authority is the authority is the authority leaders attain on the basis of various rules which have been legally established. This type of authority can be identified in the modern society. Obedience is not given to any leader or tradition, but to legally passed laws.
