The Martian Chronicles Critique
Ray Bradbury was an American author born on August 22, 1920 who died on June 5, 2012 at the age of 91. Bradbury was a prolific and beloved writer who wrote many novels considered today to be staples of the science fiction genre such as Fahrenheit 451, Something Wicked This Way Comes, and The Martian Chronicles (www.biography.com). The Martian Chronicles is a collection of short stories Bradbury wrote over several years detailing the colonization of mars by humans. Present in this collection of stories are a number of themes portraying the weaknesses of mankind. In these stories are tales of corporate greed, mental illness, religious zealotry, gullible ignorance,

It would be one thing if all of humanity were totally oblivious to the moral infractions they imposed but that is not the case. All throughout the book we see desenters of the hyper capitalistic regime be silenced. Early on in the book Spender gets gunned down as a result of his trying to protect the planet from future human “invasions” and the eventual commercialization of mars (pg.45). In Usher II we see Mr.Garett brutally murdered by Stendahl’s automata for morally opposing his amusement attraction (pg.167). This is what makes Bradbury’s message so powerful. Not only are humans poisoning something once beautiful but those who oppose it are disposed of in brutal, cold, Soviet fashion. Another way Bradbury highlights the flaws of humanity is through the way he contrasts the Martians with Humans. In the beginning of the book he shows Mars as a gleaming, pristine society. Martian society has flawed elements like Earth. They have mentally ill, violent crime, and social outcasts like humans. But as a whole they are respectful to their environment prosperous and an idealyc utopian society. He then contrast the sharply a couple stories later with the beginning of the evils of humanity. On captain Wilder’s mission the crew land on Mars and

In “The Martian Chronicles”, Bradbury combines rocket technology and space exploration together and imagine undeveloped problems played out in both the Earth and Martian fields. Although the novel treats a series of social and political problems, a visible story bend shows regarding the relationship between civilizations, living in peace with the environment, and carefully manage in technology. In “The Martian Chronicles”, Bradbury moves from the Martians’ peaceful nation with nature and technology through mankind's destructive and self-destructive disregarding from such peaceful to the final understanding that humans must take in the Martian’s ideas in order to survive and become as a civilization.
Martian Chronicles . That is was jump started his writing career. Bradbury is known for
The Martian Chronicles is a novel where earth inhabitants decide to make a new life on Mars. There is a fantasy-like idealism that the people have with Mars, and believe that the planet will create total bliss, but the problem with this is that there are citizens who already created an established life and are unhappy with the new visitors from Earth. In reality, travelling to a new place and expecting it to overwrite everything they’ve ever experienced, can result in unfulfillment.
Bradbury who was born in an era where the world witness some of the most horrendous acts committed by mankind like World War 1, World War 2, the Vietnam War and the Cold War made him a witness to mankind’s darkest days where humanity
Humans have come a long way, being able to create advanced technology, many different ways to communicate with one another, and many different ways to live, and each human in the world has a role in the world. Each human is unique and have many different traits that define one another. For example, in Frederick Douglass’s “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass”, written by Frederick Douglass himself, is an autobiography of his life growing up around slavery and his path to freedom, and also how becoming literate changed his whole perspective on the way he lived. Another example would be in Abraham Lincoln’s 2nd Inaugural Address, where he discusses the fact that the civil war was unnecessary and also how the country should end the war and that they should help each other rebuild the nation together. A final example would be in The Minister’s Black Veil, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, who writes about Mr. Hooper who wears a black veil, and the townspeople have no clue why he’s wearing it, and this scares the town and the people around him. This veil holds a heavy toll on him because it represents his sins that he needs to atone for. Although humans are naturally evil and make decisions that are based to benefit themselves, ultimately the trait of the human is to be cowardice, fearful, and optimistic, therefore we should not succumb to our greediness and instead become a better person.
Another theme Bradbury uses to gain the reader's attention is time travel. In his tenth story in The Martian Chronicles, 'Night Meeting';, Bradbury uses time travel to convey more of his ideas of Mars. 'There was a smell of Time in the air tonight. He smiled and turned the fancy in his mind. There was a thought. What did Time smell like? Like dust and clocks and people?'; Bradbury uses all of man's senses to express his feelings of what exactly Time is. By doing so, the reader has a clearer understanding of Bradbury's point of view. 'He
This universe is constructed of an unimaginable number of galaxies. One of these galaxies is full of stars, rocks, black-holes, moons, and planets. The planets rotate in a precise pattern that has a focal point on a bright, massive sun that keeps them all in line. Around ninety three million miles away from the sun, floats one planet, Earth. This planet has water, air, and billions of lifeforms. One of these billions of species is humans. With the passing of time, people develop a firmer and more powerful hold on the future of the universe. Of course, modernization is going to happen; great scientific advancements are being uncovered, and change is happening constantly; however these progressions are prioritized over morals and the condition of Earth. Science fiction plays with the idea of how people’s choices affect not only themselves but the world they once knew. In the movie Avatar the human race has declared war on an indigenous people to try and take over their planet. Earth has been striped of its resources and soon so will this alien planet, Pandora. The Ray Bradbury story, “ ーAnd the Moon Still be as Bright," in which earthlings have traveled to
Over the time their species has existed, humans haven’t changed. They have had the same greedy nature. They have repeated their behavior, history, and mistakes for thousands of years. Throughout The Martian Chronicles, Bradbury uses characters and events to express how humans don’t change in their repetition of behavior, history and mistakes.
In the book of short stories, The Martian Chronicles, Ray Bradbury portrays the theme of loneliness quite often. These stories are all about America going to and from Mars several times, so families get split up, friends have to leave each other, and people die so loneliness is unavoidable. There are several moments when characters talk about being lonely or feeling lonely but I’m only going to touch on the subject. One moment is where a man wants to get on a rocket to Mars but is not allowed to. Another is when a group of the Lonely Ones leaves Earth.
In 1940 a black man was lynched by whites for not addressing a white man as “sir”. In 1942 President Roosevelt sent Japanese-Americans away to camps because of racial prejudice from whites. In 1943 white mobs went around beating Latinos in America. In 1950 Ray Bradbury wrote Martian Chronicles, a book where humans migrate to Mars with no warm welcome from martians. Bradbury wrote his novel during the 1940’s a time where racism was no stranger. Racial injustice was happening left and right in America, which seemed to have influenced his writing. In The Martian Chronicles humans went to Mars to explore it. Eventually they found out that Mars was suitable for human life and began to colonize it. When humans first came many of the Martians were uncomfortable around humans. As the story goes on Martians start to take negative action towards the humans since they aren’t of the same kind. Martians and humans had a horrible relationship to start with but over time it improved vastly, just like white people with people of color in the US. White people were the martians while people of color are the humans except white people colonized POC land not vice versa. Ever since America was founded time and time again POC have been used and abused, which could have been the inspiration for the novel. Bradbury wrote the Martian Chronicles during the 1940’s; a time when African Americans were lynched, Japanese American citizens were sent away to camps, and
In the book The Illustrated Man, Ray Bradbury uses the theme of world destruction in several of his stories: “The Highway”, “The Last Night of the World”, and “Zero Hour”. He expresses his opposition to war to us through these four stories by writing of atom wars, and extra-terrestrial conflicts and annihilation. Through his writings, we see his views and stances on how the world has turned a blind eye from equality and worldly respect to a more demanding and selfish state of mind. Ray Bradbury starts the theme of world destruction in his book with the story, “The Highway”. In it, he talks about a highway that is often bustling with cars despite being located in a quite desolate area.
Harold Bloom expressed his feelings of the book, “.. touched upon the deeper human feelings and aspirations. ”(Bloom). This statement is agreeable, because when reading this book people understand that humans cannot respect others and only care about their needs only. This gives them a perspective about how their emotions towards their longing desire life affects the way they live. Bradbury uses Mars and the Martians as a compare contrast to the way Earth people deal with the world around them.
My favorite book to date and top recommendation for schools to require is The Martian by Andy Weir. Everything about this book was truly captivating. I became so engaged in the process of how Mark Watney used his Botanist skills to survive. Watney taught me that your knowledge can be useful to you in ways you could never have imagined, a lesson that I think can be impactful for students to remember not only in every course they take at school, but also with the information picked up outside of the classroom. Reading The Martian also gave me insight on how important the quality of trust can really be. It was inspiring to see the remaining Ares 3 crew members make the unanimous and risky decision to rescue Watney, allowing the audience to take
First, in The Martian and Persepolis setting strongly influences the characters and their experiences. The setting themselves are quite different as The Martian takes place on Mars, while Persepolis takes place in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. However, both texts have placed their characters in situations where they are challenged to adapt to what is taking place around them. For example, to show significance of setting, Mark Watney in The Martian is stranded on Mars and must survive with only the limited resources he has, and his knowledge. That said, if this text were to take place on Earth or in a different setting, the story wouldn’t present the same challenges and experiences that it does. Overall, while completing his daily routine Watney discovers “Mars is a barren wasteland and I am completely alone here” (Weir 74). In this quote Watney is expressing the loneliness aspect of the conditions he is in. Similarly, the setting in Persepolis is crucial because it places the story with the historical context of a country in deep political conflict. Having the story take place in a real-life setting also allows for a stronger use of previous knowledge of the setting for the reader. However, the setting impacts the story so notably and if someone were to use prior knowledge about the region, shying away from making assumptions would be very important. Both texts include crucial details and events that are clear effects of where the stories take place.
In the book The Martian written by Andy Weir it is story about a man named Mark Watney. Mark is a martian which is left behind on mars by his crew. His crew believing that he was dead because a satellite hit him and they could not find him in the dust storm. The dust storm is the reason why his crew left because it was to dangerous. Mark finds himself alive after being hit by the satellite and finds ways to communicate with crew on earth. He faces problems that if not solved may lead to his own death. For example in the book he needs to find ways to make more food, to be able to survive until he finds a way to communicate with his crew on earth. NASA finds out throughout the book that he is still alive through satellite images and communicate
