Cultural Differences Between Race And Ethnicity

Ethnicity and Race are very difficult to define. The two words are so closely related and often times used interchangeably.

Race and ethnicity are the occasionally have been used interchangeably. Race is described as a person’s physical appearance such as skin color, eye color, hair and many other biological traits and characteristics. Race mainly refers to the differences in skin color in the contemporary world. When we say that person is fair skinned or is black we are referring to the race of that person. Ethnicity is the cultural aspect of a an individual or a group such as the nationality of the person, the language they use to communicate, their descendants , the particular region they inhabit for example American, African, African Americans, etc. In a nutshell race is an overview of how you look and ethnicity is the social and cultural aspect of grouping you are born into.

The difference between ethnicity and race is that race is supposedly a scientific difference between groups of people. Race subdivides groups of people by a physical or genetic characteristic. Ethnicity, on the other hand, considers cultural traits. Race is a flawed term, because there is more variation within a racial group than between racial groups. Ethnicity, is a true term, because there are distinct cultural groups within groups of humans. Although there is a lot of mixing and melding of cultural groups, it is still easy to find distinct groups.

There have been scientific findings that race is not biological. There are many things that make up a person and one-size fits all label does not always work. There is a huge difference between race and ethnicity. Every single person has a different makeup, as far as culture, ethnicity, and race. The world is changing so much, with immigration, culture, and social norms, we need to learn to change and adapt with them.

Many individuals see race and ethnicity as meaning the same thing but in reality they are separate and both have their own distinct identities. Race refers to the biological traits like our physical appearance, eye color, skin color and characteristics set by society that we identify with. Ethnicity is groups of individuals with the same common interest and beliefs. They speak the same language and they also have shared characteristics such as their culture. Ethnic groups look at themselves differently during certain periods of time. They are often times defined by being stereotyped. Reid Mandell, B., & Schram, B. (2012).

Does Race Truly Matter…” Respectively, race and ethnicity are related to biological and sociological factors. Ethnicity differs from race because ethnicity relates to cultural factors such as nationality, ancestry, beliefs, and languages. Race can be defined as a person’s physical appearance, such as skin or eye color. Culture is considered to be different from these two by referring to the behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a particular social, ethnic, or age group.

Race and ethnicity are two completely different things. In my opinion race is not even an actual thing. The only way I could see race as something such as, the “human race”. But trying to label someone by what they look like or where they come from is definitely a part of ethnic backgrounds.

Race and ethnicity are big issues in this country, one problem in particular are the many stereotypes that people face because of their race and ethnicity. Some of the similarities between the two terms are that by definition, they are a categorized group of a population. They are similarly significant in the sense that both terms share characteristic traits. In addition, "ethnicity" and "race" share genealogy. Contrarily, the two terms are different because ethnicities are categorized on the basis of a real or presumed common genealogy or ancestry, while races are classified on the basis of various sets of physical characteristics. In other words, ethnicity is determined by your ancestors and family tree. Race is decided based on physical characteristics such as eyes, nose structure, ears, body type, etc. Two examples that I would consider a race to be are African Americans and Whites. Two examples

Ethnicity is the “identity of a particular racial, national, or cultural group and observance of that group's customs, beliefs, [and] language” (Dictionary.com, n.d.). This definition beautifully points out that it’s a way a person identifies who they are in reference to a specific group. (Dictionary.com, n.d.). It’s also important to note the way individuals identify the race that they have chosen to be apart of. Race is “a group of people of common ancestry, distinguished from others by physical characteristics, such as hair type, colour of eyes and skin” (Dictionary.com, n.d.). Identity and race are fundamental factors that need to be taken into account when addressing a patient. These characteristics are not generic and will bring knowledge

James M. Henslin defines race as “a group of people with inherited physical characteristics that distinguish it from another group” (2014). Meanwhile, ethnicity “refers to cultural characteristics” (Henslin, 2014). The difference mostly relies in a similar argument to the classic nature versus nurture argument. Race is what a person genetically inherits. Whether it may be skin tone or anatomical features, they are dictated by something outside of a person’s personal preference. An example of race is that a person could be caucasian or latino. They do not get to choose, they are simply given the traits of that race through their bloodline.

Race may be defined as a group of people who have been identified as having real or alleged physical characteristics.

Ethnicity is all around us in the world. It has a special mark on every person in the world because it is what makes everyone different in their own ways. Ethnicity has different topics that branch off into others. Examples of these are Nationality, Race, Diversity, and Culture. Each of these topics have an impact on every person and group of people in good and bad ways; the top major 2 being Race and Ethnicity. Ethnicity and Race is crucial to determine who a person really is and what also brings out the light to the rest of the world.

In contrast to the idea of race, Ethnicity refers to ethnic affiliation, or the “cultural practices and outlooks of a given community of people that set them apart from others” (Giddens, 1997:210).
