The graduate may encounter several issues unless he/she is well prepared and have studied the country’s culture. As the graduate arrives to Asia he/she will discover the difference in the language. When beginning work with the client, there were a number of apparent differences between her and myself, including age, race, and social class. As previously stated I had to become more culturally competent about working with African American clients before I started seeing the client. Furthermore, I had to become aware of the difficulties that would be present due to our age difference. I made sure to give Betty the opportunity to tell me how situations made her feel, and empathized with her, making sure to help her feel as though I understood even though I was much younger and had not experienced what she had. Additionally, the client and I come from different social classes. I had to make certain that she did not feel judged during our sessions, and provided her with the resources necessary to assist her in overcoming barriers. Sands and Gellis (2011) indicate that African American cultural values and norms derive from a number of situations, which include responses and adaptations to the oppression, poverty, and racism, which made them victims. Knowing and understanding the various differences that I would face working with the client helped to better prepare me for sessions.
Since the beginning of America, this country has been a place of diversity and many different cultures. In the beginning the Europeans made up a majority of the population. Then many different groups of people came to America seeking religious freedom or to escape war in their country of origin. This brought many different cultures and diversity to America. America became for people of many different cultures and backgrounds to call home. Although African and Asian people have been living in the United States for many decades they still are treated differently than the Caucasian group. Africans and Asian people have both been asked to assimilate to American culture. History shows that both of these groups have not always had an easy time interacting with the Caucasian group. There are many differences among Africans, Asian, and Caucasian culture, but there are also similarities. Minority groups interact with the Caucasian group differently, but over time their equality in the society has improved.
Music is a creative art form that allows the artist to construct something that expresses a purpose. It evolves over time and changes as the world changes, taking on many different motivations behind the melody and lyrics. In today’s society, anger, oppression, racism, and negative opinions rule the media and popular culture. I believe that African Americans need to show their self worth and not let white people hold them back. With the music in white culture often mocking African American culture and portraying negative stereotypes, African Americans have to find ways to gain respect. In acknowledgement of the negative portrayal of their culture, African Americans respond by creating songs and videos that express their pride in their culture and heritage, react to white oppression, and communicate their independence.
The African American Culture and Traditions A Research Study and Facts That Will Take Us Into What Makes This Culture So Unique.
Americans of African descent still have limited economic freedom, even after the end of the civil war on Monday. More specifically, it will be concentrating on exploring cultural identities and diversity as Asian American students in higher education. As well as this, my thesis will address the factors that influence their experiences. Some of these include, but are not limited to: financial issues, language barriers, and lack of opportunity, lack of diversity and representation, and familial obligation. In addition, it will investigate how immigration history and familial influence affects the college journey and the understanding of one’s
The main reason for choosing the African American population for this work is because of its unique array of cultural backgrounds. African American communities across the United States are more culturally diverse now than any other time in history with increasing numbers of immigrants from African nations, the Caribbean, Central America and other countries (American Psychiatric Association, 2014). The United States is among the most ethnically diverse nations on the planet (Peterson, K., 2008). With the demographics of the United States constantly changing and as ethnic cultural diversity emerges heightening of culturally competent care is at hand. All cultures have systems of health belief to explain what cause illness, how it can be
Someone culture can identify who they are as a person. not everyone have the same culture it all depends on the Family. My culture is mixed with both, Mexican and African-American. The way my family and I do things can be extremely different compared to others. For the fact that my culture is mixed with Mexican and African-American, we do things unusual compared to other families. My family eat lots of tacos and fried chicken most of the time. It all depends on who is cooking, weather is my mom or my step dad. My mother is African-American and my step-dad is Mexican American . Whenever my mom do cook we mostly eat soul food, while my step dad mostly cook Mexican food or BBQ. My family biggest tradition will be Thanksgiving because, we
In the last 100 years, the American population of 65 years or older people has increased eleven times. The 2030 estimates project that 22.3 percent of the population (80 million) will be 65 or older. (Bookman & Kimbrel, 2011). Basically, the majority of the over 65 population is healthier and is living longer. However, people of color have suffered through racial suppression in this country. Many of them enter old age after a lifetime of struggle that has not allowed them to save for retirement and where, because they have not had access to decent health care, they are in poor health. (Bookman & Kimbrel, 2011). Medicare does not cover all of the care the elderly may need, especially those with chronic conditions.
Several similarities existed between African Americans and Native American during the late 19th century. Both faced discrimination even though it came in different form in that African American struggled to maintain basic constitutional rights while Native Americans were challenged with war from the American army and the risk destroying their culture.
The many perspectives being portrayed between two races Native Americans and African Americans. They both have one thing in common with the dominant culture. There is a clear religious idea for they use it to justify enslavement, colonization, and settlement that is rooted on Christian based values. Chief Pontiac writes a Speech at Detriot that includes The Great Spirit. Samson Occom was a native that converted to Christianity but there is inequality between him and the dominant culture. Petalsharo was another Indian who gave a speech that includes the comparison between his religion and the dominant culture’s religion. From the perspective of the enslaved Douglass, he views them as being hypocrites because of their justification for slavery

As I was waiting on the bus on Flatbush Avenue and Farragut, I noticed a long line of people awaiting the opening of a church. It was around 7 o’clock on a Saturday morning and the church door was heavily closed with huge locks that resemble barricade locks. But as for the people, they differ in ages, in genders, however, they were all African-Americans. They were not talking to one another, which show me that, they were not members of the church. Some leaned on the wall while standing; some were standing and moving to bypass time. One man actually sat on his knees with his hands on the floor and it was clear he was displaying a sign of exhaustion. Their faces were all telling me one thing that these people are being beat with misery. Their
My mother is Caucasian, my father is African American. I am a mix between the two. As I got older and was able to fully comprehend the world around me, I started to realize I was being treated differently when I was with my mom. Trips to the grocery store made it more personal. White people were quick to smile at me and were always very pleasant. Blacks would simply ignore my gestures. Things were the opposite when I was with my dad, White people would avoid eye contact, wouldn’t smile at me when I smiled at them. Black people were quicker to return my gestures. Completely different than when I was with my mother. As a young child, this was very confusing and hurtful.
