Homowo Cultural Festival: A Memorable Observation I would like to talk about a tradition called Homowo festival which is practiced in a community I observed when my family and I visited Ghana, August last year. Homowo festival is celebrated by the GA people of the Greater Accra region where my husband comes from. The moral of the festival is to commemorate the period in their history when there was a serious famine in the land. The festival is very glamorous and showcases a great deal of traditional values of the GA people. Legend has it that there was a period in the history of the GA Kingdom, when there was a severe famine. There was no rain and the people were in great starvation. The people instead of sitting down and wallowing in self-pity, rather embarked on a vicious of food cultivation, and were rewarded with a bountiful harvest. This was a totally new and exciting observational experience to me since I come from South Africa. The GA celebrate “Homowo” to hoot at hunger and rejoice in their harvest. It makes the people recollect the noble past of their ancestors, and to express their gratitude to them. A month before the celebration, there is a ban on drumming and any type of noise making in the Greater Accra region. The calendar for the celebration which is usually in August is made by the Dantu Priest. The festival starts when the Dantu priest celebrates his grand custom of feasting and making of concoctions for royal family to sprinkle to
The literacy event that improved my English skills when this occasion occurred for the reason that I had learned a new expertise to essay writing. In my eleventh grade English class of High School our final essay happened to be to select a topic that extremely changed our views and generated a significant life lesson. My classmates and I spent three days brainstorming topics as my teacher believed that picking a virtuous event in your life took time to figure out nevertheless to not decide on just a trivial moment. There’s a three stepped process of writing our final essay for my English paper: first rough draft consisted of writing on two ideas you had, the second rough draft needs to be extra formal with your final topic and supporting evidence,
During the winter solstice around the time the sun went down the Yup’ik tribe of Alaska participated in something interesting: The Bladder Festival. All the bladders of the seals that were killed in the years hunt were dried, filled with air, and then sent out to sea. Someone from today’s time would probably think of this as an odd thing to be doing. When actually, it is a process that embodies deep meanings that reveal the deep appreciation, by the Yup’ik, of the world and its blessings.
A group oriented period, this liminal stage is crucial for the cementation of the collective identity that follow the initiates for the rest of their lives (139). After the circumcision, when the initiates commence seclusion, the mother’s brother usually host a party called an ekehonio. The celebrations that follow circumcision rituals are meant to reinforce and reestablish familial bonds that are an explicit sign of kin and communal relations. As illustrated by an ekehonio at Stephen Wambura’s home, the celebration includes a large feast, the distribution of presents and money, and where male and female initiates embark on a obosamba performance (songs sung by initiates) where they can show their oratory skills and leadership (149). Finally, the social scene also serves the initiates an opportunity to scope out and evaluate potential
Being an avid music lover and a communication studies student, I had a desire to integrate the knowledge acquired during the course of my classes with an event that enabled me to understand the dynamics between culture and music events. This intrigues me to study and experience the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival as an artifact of music. Coachella is an extremely popular event amongst individuals of my age bracket where people of diverse races, ethnic background, creeds unite together for the love of music. Considering it the perfect opportunity, I decided to experience the true essence of Coachella. The event is said to be the most popular
tribal members profess their dedication to their traditions and beliefs. "The feast of the New Yam
Although the world climate around exploitation has altered in the last few years, mostly moving away from the exploited industrial countries such as China, it is still important to look at what was happening in China so that it can be understood in connection with today. The documentary by Robert Redmon, Mardi Gras: Made in China focuses on the exploited Chinese factory workers crafting various beads for the Americans to throw at each other for sexual gratification. The documentary does a good job jumping back and forth between the factory workers and the celebrators of Mardis Gras, creating an interesting parallel, implicating the absolute uselessness in the beads for such a large cost. Marx's theories of exploitation through Capitalism can be tied too well to the Chinese-Mardi Gras beads exploitation, as the Chinese workers were put through an extreme form of Capitalist exploitation that even Marx may never have expected.
The cultures of each of the many ethnic groups in Africa surround their family, art, music and through some oral literature. There are also very interesting traditions that make Africa’s culture stand out and make it unique in many ways. The following three African traditions are very interesting and fascinating to learn about and can be thought to be very weird as well. The first of the many celebrations and traditions they have is a celebration ceremony known as the “Khweta Ceremony”. In the Khweta Ceremony, the point of it is to prove the manhood of a young boy, by the boy showing endurance and strength. This Khweta Ceremony is practiced in several regions throughout the continent Africa. In the second tradition, the African people have is what they call “Spitting Your Blessings,” this tradition is when members of the village spit as a way of a blessing for what they have or get. And finally, the third cultural tradition is when they get married, each wife has their own house that she and her child live in, the child never lives with the father. Throughout the rest of their culture, the people in the continent only speak a related language to the others but has a different dialect and practice a lot of valuable religious customs and have specific dwellings. The majority of the people living in Africa are indigenous to their region. The indigenous people believe that an aboriginal person's
The Hawaiians' adoration for their craft, custom, and society can be seen in different celebrations celebrated for the presentation and development of Hawaiian workmanship and society. Mardi Gras is a Christian holiday, which was brought by the French when they colonized a part of the United States of America. The first time that Mardi Grass was celebrated in America, was on March 3, 1699 (History, 2016) in what is today known as Louisiana, later in this carnival would be moved to New Orleans. Since the carnival was moved out of New Orleans, every year is celebrated between February and March; it all depends when is going to be Easter.
It was much of a debate on whether I would be attending this year’s Shaky Knees music festival, but after realizing that I would not see all my favorite artists/bands (The 1975, Wolf Alice, and The Japanese House) all in the same festival again, I made sure I went to the Friday performances. Wanting to get a good spot for my first act, The Japanese House, I made sure to get to Centennial Park early, around 11, giving myself time to grab my wristband from Will Call and ask questions regarding their camera policy. Thankfully getting in with my “nonprofessional” DSLR wasn’t an issue and the whole day I wasn’t asked about a press pass. Some were even surprised that I was allowed in with it as they were told different. I suppose it was just a good
Because different races experience race relations through contrasting lenses, people have diverse ways of explaining their history. This is because of the very different ways people of different races live their lives. For example, Native Americans would have a completely different view on race relations than Christopher Columbus would. To explain they way a culture views race relations, the meaning is often symbolically constructed. The social construct of “blackness” and how it is symbolically constructed is a good example to use. In two different Salasacan festivals, blackness is seen in two polar opposite ways. In the pre-Lenten carnival, blackness is seen as an oppressed slave who self-liberated himself. In the festival of Caporales, blackness
The performance by the Vijay Iyer Sextet on March 7 at Memorial Hall reveals a deeper connection between jazz and the public’s interest in evocative tones. Vijay Iyer is a Grammy-nominated jazz composer and pianist. He is the main composer for the sextet and is seen as the unspoken leader. His sextet is made up of five of his other closest friends, who are all composers and musicians as well. The music this group performs is categorized as improvisational jazz. However, the music also includes different styles of music from other genres. By playing music that encompasses several different genres, the Vijay Iyer Sextet is able to appeal to the demographic of people who are older and listen to the nostalgic
The upcoming Denver Film Festival, which runs the first two weeks of November is one of the most highly anticipated movie related events of the year. As this annual festival has started to gain more public attention over the years, this event has seen
After carefully reading over Charlotte’s rough draft, I was able to have a clear understanding of the meaning behind the first mass-produced soft drink Moxie, as well as the Moxie Festival which takes place every year in Lisbon, Maine during the month of July. I felt the second paragraph introduces the topic very well because the author goes into great detail behind the creator of Moxie (Dr. Augustin Thompson), and the fact that people travel great distances in order to attend the Moxie Parade. According to the author, “The Moxie Festival is aimed to be an all age festival, but younger kids usually have the most fun.” Another positive element that I wish to point out in this essay is the conversation that occurs between the author and an individual
