Concert Ethnography: Vijay Iyer Sixtet The performance by the Vijay Iyer Sextet on March 7 at Memorial Hall reveals a deeper connection between jazz and the public’s interest in evocative tones. Vijay Iyer is a Grammy-nominated jazz composer and pianist. He is the main composer for the sextet and is seen as the unspoken leader. His sextet is made up of five of his other closest friends, who are all composers and musicians as well. The music this group performs is categorized as improvisational jazz. However, the music also includes different styles of music from other genres. By playing music that encompasses several different genres, the Vijay Iyer Sextet is able to appeal to the demographic of people who are older and listen to the nostalgic …show more content…
In addition, the audience was also older in age and was mainly made up of white Americans. Thus, the demographics of the audience reveals that the type of music being performed by the Vijay Iyer Sixtet appealed to the nostalgic tones of popular American music styles in the past. An example of this is when the sextet performed a piece that was inspired by the Detroit techno music movement. The Detroit techno music movement was popular in the late 1900s and is considered the birthplace of techno music. This incorporation of popular music tones in the past mixed with improvisational jazz induced a much more pronounce reaction from the audience. Throughout the show, the audience reacted calmly to the improvisational jazz pieces played. There were no pronounced or exaggerated reactions from the crowd, as they mainly reacted with claps or a slow head-bob following the beat. However, when the sextet incorporated the use of techno beats and modern technology, such as a soundboard in the Detroit techno piece, the audience reacted with more enthusiasm. The clapping evolved into loud cheering and whistling. The change in reactions by the audience further reveals the …show more content…
The instrumentation of the show included a piano, bass, drums, saxophone, trumpet, fugal horn, and soundboard. The use of popular jazz instruments further reveals the performer’s intention to give the audience a taste of the sentimental, antique tones of jazz music. As the instrumentation reveals the genre of the music being performed, the stage for the show was set up in a way that highlighted the artists performing solos during the improvisational pieces. For example, the use of lights played a large role in visually isolating the soloists. The lights used during the show only illuminated the performers that were located upstage, while there were no lights used to illuminate downstage. Thus, as performers were not playing in the piece they would move downstage into the darkness. This would cause the focus of the audience to shift to the other performers that were still playing. The intentional movement of the artists downstage reveals the artist’s intent to highlight each individual instrument in the sextet and the improvisational skills of the artist playing them. Also, the visual depiction of an artist emerging from the shadows located downstage and playing prompted the audience to clap. The clapping was also prompted after a musician finishes the personal solo improvisational piece within a song. The clapping from the audience when an instrument
For this concert report I chose to go to a performance of student composers held at the Kimball Recital Hall. I chose this one because I wanted to see some of the talent that my peers have in the music realm, and also it was one of the only concerts I have been able to attend because I usually work at night. It was impressive to hear pieces composed by students. I cannot imagine creating something as complex as a musical composition, much less actually performing it, so this aspect of the concert was particularly awe-inspiring. There was a large attendance, and I think that much of the audience consisted of friends of the composers and/or performers. I went with three friends, who I convinced by telling it would be interesting to see
Dr. Carol Williams’s organ plays were just fantastic. Despite the fact that seeing the instrument called, “organ” was my first time, it was pretty impressive how that instrument worked. All the pedals and the three layers of keyboards were just as complicated as a calculus math problem. The concert was played at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion at Balboa Park. The surrounding was not too bad. Although the concert day was Sunday, it was quite crowded. Besides the crowdedness, the surroundings were not too rough. All ages were welcome to seat and enjoy the sounds of organ. I saw mostly old aged audiences and I saw a little amount of college aged audiences with the music report information on their hands.
Furthermore, the connection between these artists ensured an impeccable performance. Seeing people look up and interact with each other reinforced their confidence and helped the ensemble stay together. They moved and played together as one organism. Thus, short notes were played identically by every person, creating sections of order in a piece of pandemonium.
For as long as mankind has walked on this earth, music has been an important part of our culture and lifestyles. Each walk of life beats to a different drum. Different cultures use music for many aspects of their lives; for religious purposes, for celebrations, for comfort, for sorrow, for relaxation, for sports, for dances, for energy, for learning, for sleeping, and for sexual experiences. Everyone uses music for something. Music connects with people and reaches them in ways that words simply cannot. Music is a representation of what feelings sound like. It expresses emotion and brings that characteristic out from within us; it tells us a story. Every generation has its’ own sound and different music styles have emerged and become
On Friday, July 10th, I chose virtually to attend an online YouTube Symphony Orchestra Concert-2011. Many beautiful pieces were performed by a magnificent orchestra that included more than sixty participants and consisted of instruments such as: flutes, oboes, horn, clarinets, bassoons, trumpets, percussions and strings. Concert’s selections varied in length, temperament, mood and dynamics. Orchestra Symphony gave an overpowering, extraordinary presentation and delivery.
The concert I attended was called the Faculty and Student Recital, which took place in the Cisco Auditorium on April 11, 2017. The music that was on the program was mostly what is called “classical” music, as well as a Chinese Folk Song, an electronic composition, and variations on an Indian Tala. In the classical pieces, the instruments that were used were the violin, the piano, the cello, and the oboe. In the electronic composition, the computer was used to make music. In the Chinese Folk Song, the piccolo was used to imitate the unique timbre of a Chinese flute. In the Indian tala, drums from Ghana were used to imitate the rhythm and sound of Indian drums. The piano, the violin, the cello, and the piccolo all originate
Never could I have thought that my first concert experience was going to be in a college class, performed by various composers of classical music. During the concert, I got to listen to four performances. First, the Oxycotton was played by Tim Sanchez. Second, Samantha Post played Acht Stucke on flute, followed by Nicholas Gledhill, playing Blues and Variations for Monk on horn. Finally, the CSU Graduate Brass Quintet performed a piece named Misty. In this essay, I will share my personal experience of the concert and discuss the different elements of music seen in the different performances.
On Sunday, May10 2015, a concert was held in The Broad Stage. The concert was played by Santa Monica College Symphony Orchestra, whose conductor is Dr. James Martin. For this concert, I would identify myself as a referential listener at this concert. I say this because I am not an expert in music, therefore it would be hard for me to be a critical listener. I wouldn’t be able to tell what went wrong with a performance even if some incorrect notes were played. I was more of a referential listener because the music was soothing and brought my mind to peaceful thoughts. This essay will tells my experience of the concert in order to persuade my friend to attend a classical music concert with you in the future.
I chose to do my first concert report on Pearl Jam. The concert took place at Deer Creek the weekend after class started, so it was perfect timing to do this assignment. This was the first time I have seen Pearl, and I thought it was worthy of writing a report on.
The first half of the concert was only instrumental. There were two violins, two violas, and two cellos. They sat on stage with the violins one my right, then the violas in the middle, and the cellos on the end. The violins played a few songs solo. The second half of the concert was only the choir and a piano. Their performance started with the song Daybreak. The song Daybreak also had a few girls playing percussion, one of them had a tambourine. Using SHMRG, the Harmony of most of the choirs songs were very homophonic. The Melody of most of the songs were mainly slow, though a couple songs were very fast, and upbeat.
On Thursday April 25, 2013 , I attended a jazz vocal concert at the Music Concert Hall. The first vocal ensemble opened up the performance with a slow rhythmic song called Blue Skies. It began with vocals and I noticed a light auxiliary percussion and drum rhythm. Also, the bass guitarist used walking bass and the piano and electric guitar joined in as well. The first song also consisted of two soloist Regina and Chantel who took the front stage to show off their chops. After the solo performances they fell back into the vocal sections and finished off the song as a complete band. The second performance had a piano opening which led to vocals joining in at the same time as the rhythm section. This performance
This semester I have experience many live musical performances. Some of these performances have let me down but for the most part, these performances have been everything I ever expected. My two favorite performances this semester were Festival Vallenato and Ultra Music Festival. Although these two types of music are different in every way possible, the people and the performers are exactly where I feel I am in the right place.

As we all waited in line to go into the concert there was a thrill of
This afternoon, I went to the music concert hall where is located in the music building for the listening hour, a small noon-time concert which is performed by the staff and students from the music majors. Since it is a free noon-time concert, most of the audiences just wear the t-shirts and jeans to the concert. Dresses are not required for the concert. The performance today is given by the Ananda Jazz Ensemble. They have played “Running Away”, composed by Bob Marley; “Madalena”, composed by Ivan Linz; “Conejitos y Ananda”, composed by Abi Romero; “La Bikina”, composed by Ruben Fuentes; and “Chukaro”, also composed by Abi Romero. Because this is a Latin Americdan Journey, all of the music performed is jazz music. All pieces played in the concert are an ensemble of piano, bass, and drums. During the concert, I was trying to be a perceptive listener; I enjoyed the music with concentration and paid attention to the music’s unity and variety, such as the dynamics and tempos. I also tried to associate the music with a picture when I listened to it and understand the emotion in the music.
