Throughout the confrontation that Ernie and Antonio have about Ultima, Antonio has to stand up for her because of the way he is being raised in which his family had customs and beliefs. In his family's eyes a curandera’s power is strong enough to help them through any obstacle in life. Curandera’s are known for being very spiritual to the Earth, such as the way Ultima is to the Earth due to the fact that she knows all the herbs and medicines to help and cure people of what they are facing. Ultima is a mentor towards Antonio and tries to teach Antonio all there is to know before she passes away. Antonio will stand up for her due to his customs and beliefs. Antonio fed up of the way Ernie is talking to him, so Antonio cries, “ Okay! … I bent …show more content…
However, other readers may feel that it should not be read throughout schools due to the fact that it contains “witchcraft, Spanish vulgar, and non-Christian beliefs.” The novel does contain things that will have someone guessing their views on their Christian beliefs due to the fact that Antonio denounces his predestination and creates his own course throughout life. Furthermore, parents may feel that Ultima, Antonio’s curandera is a witch and does do witchcraft, and they do not want to expose their children to evil. A journalist, Andy Rau shares her opinion, “Some people objected to the book’s vernacular or the issues regarding witchcraft” (Rau). Rau shared the concern as others do with the fact that Ultima could be seen as an evil figure throughout the novel. Although, Rau does show that the novel does not have evil and witchcraft. Rau states, “A lot of times, many people didn’t even read the book, but they pick a chapter in which is a small portion that they disagreed with and bl[o]w it out of proportion” (Rau). This quote shows that people only read a section of the novel where it may seem bad, and try to make the whole novel seem as if it were bad to read. This novel does contain stuff that would be questionable, but overall is about Antonio trying to learn about the
Many people in the town love Ultima. They praise her and can’t thank her enough when she cures one of their loved ones. While many love and praise her, a select few in the town believe that Ultima is a witch and of ten accuse Ultima of it. One of these is Tenorio Trementina, the father of the three Trementina sisters who put a curse on Lucas, Antonio’s uncle. Even Antonio, who loves Ultima very much, once doubted if Ultima was really a witch or just a curandera. Some of Antonio’s classmates have also called Ultima a witch. Tenorio often besieges Ultima. Despite all this, Ultima is still very strong and remains strong until the day of her death. Ultima is also very brave strong. She is not threatened when Tenorio threatens to kill Ultima or when people make the sign of the cross to see if she really is a witch.
First, and probably most important are the three sources of understanding for Antonio. First, there is Ultima, who serves as a neutral source of understanding and comforter for Antonio. The next source of understanding for Antonio is God. Antonio constantly struggles to understand good and evil through the eyes of the Catholic God. The final source of
In chapter 10, Ultima encounters a situation in which she must lift a curse from the body Antonio’s Uncle Lucas and cure him from the near clutches of death that was inflicted by Tenorio’s 3 bewitched Trementina daughters. With Ultima busy creating herbal preparations for Lucas’s cure she instructed Antonio to aide her with apprentice like duties such as making a fire and following her commands to helping his uncle drink the remedy. As the night grew longer Antonio witnessed Ultima use her magic to cure his uncle Lucas and rebound the cure back to its origin. Antonio witnessed Ultima mold three black clay dolls resembling the Trementina girls and chanting of prayers “You have done evil,” she sang, “But good is stronger than evil, “And what you sought to do will undo you…”(Anaya, pg. 101). Finally after the arduous process to cure Lucas’s curse, Lucas vomited a huge ball wiggling hair in which later Ultima burned by the tree of the evil Trementina’s dancing tree. As a result Ultima triumphantly saved Lucas’s life through the way of Curandera, and Antonio realized how the powers of church and doctors
His parents have ideas which conflict each other when it relates to their precious last son’s fate. Like a hawk swooping down on its prey, Ultima, an elderly curandera comes to occupy a room in the Marez residence. To everyone else in the house Ultima staying with them is negligible, but the bond Antonio and Ultima soon begin to create is the first step into Antonio’s quest in finding his fate. “When she came the beauty of the llano unfolded before my eyes, and the gurgling waters of the river sang to the hum of the turning earth. The magical time of childhood stood still, and the pulse of the living earth pressed its mystery into my living blood.”(Anaya 1) Ultima’s presence alone lifted Antonio’s spirits, even the little things such as the llano he lived on all his life that had become mundane to him, began to glisten with great importance.
Ultima throughout the story shows signs of being a curandera rather that being a witch. When Ultima is first introduced she is described a curandera who knows her herbs: “Ultima was a curandera a woman who knew the herbs” (P4 L12). Ultima is a Curandera because curanderos in our world heal people using the herbs they know and find in the forest or plains which perfectly describes Ultima as she helps and cures Antonio's family using herbs as well. Furthermore, there is a video Tittled “The Curandera” which is about a Curandera and her practices as a curandera which the central character states
A clear theme in Bless Me, Ultima is Antonio’s struggle to find who he is amidst two sides of himself: the Lunas and the vaqueros. He fears for his future, where he believes he will have to decide between the two parts of himself, and inevitably disappoint one half of the people in his life. He fears what his life will be. He fears the river. This all changes when Ultima arrives. She teaches him to love the presence of the river, and to love his life however it may come. She shows him that the river is the lifeblood of the herbs she uses to heal and save, and that he can use his life to help others as well. But her spirit, in the owl, also shows him that life, and the river, can be very dangerous (Anaya, 14).
Another example of Antonio's sense of development in good and evil is his home. It is means a lot to Antonio, because the people living in it makes him feel protected and provide warmth to him. When Tenorio and his men came to his house to take Ultima away, Antonio’s father "You walk on my land! That is my business" (Anaya 130). This make Antonio feel that he would be protected by the presence of his father., Gabriel. However, Antonio's mother made home very fond and ardent for him. She had always been affectionate towards him and would show him care. Most importantly, Ultima was the one who contributed to the goodness of Antonio's home. She made Antonio feel as though her presence filled the home with love and safety. It was Ultima who calmed Antonio down after he had seen Lupito die. Whenever he had a nightmare, Ultima would always be right beside to comfort Antonio and " could sleep again" (Anaya 34). Ultima's fearlessness against Tenorio and his three daughters made Antonio feel that he would be safe wherever Ultima was. Overall, the
In the book “Bless Me Ultima,” by Rodolfo Anaya, the role of duality goes very into depth with its many controversial topics. Some of these topics include the contrast between Catholicism and indigenous mysticism, good witchcraft and evil witchcraft, and men and women. Since Antonio must struggle to find his own identity and place he must battle between his family, beliefs, and self. This can be seen between his parents, who’s frequently conflicting views make it difficult for Antonio to accept either of their belief systems, his struggles between the English and Spanish language, and how evil and good affected his innocence.
Ultima's Christ like nature is displayed through her abilities, or powers as a curandera to perform miracles. Ultima's powers are shown in the text as being good; although, it is confusing to say whether her powers are coming from Christianity, or witchcraft? To illustrate the issue of this comparison to Christ, Antonio's mother recalls Ultima's powers saying, "I have seen her work miracles. She learned from the flying man from Las Pasturas"(Anaya 85). The incongruity of this statement to that of Christianity is clear cut. According to the Dictionary of Hispanic Biography, Anaya acquired the myth and superstitions from his family who lived in Pastura about a women like Ultima, who could heal (42). From Anaya's experience, syncretism of miracles and elements of superstition in folk Catholicism is apparently true. However, the only one to perform miracles in Christianity is Christ.
An example of magical realism in the story is that of the Golden Carp. While many people would not consider it real, the concept is similar to the idea of god. The Golden Carp is something that Antonio considers magical and fascinating but is reluctant to believe in. At the bottom of page 113 Antonio says, “The Golden Carp came. Cico pointed and I turned to where the stream came out of the dark grotto of overhanging tree branches. At first I thought I must be dreaming.” (Anaya, Page #113). Even though he was enthusiastic to view the Golden Carp, once he saw it he had a hard time accepting its physical existence.
Characters: Ultima- An old Curandera who comes to spend her last days with Antonio and his family. She is Tony’s mentor and helps him to find the right path for his life.
Ultima is an old curandera, which means healer in spanish, who comes to El Puerto to live with the Marez family after she is left alone in the town of Las Pasturas. When she arrives and turns to greet him, Antonio feels awestruck. According to Antonio, he “felt the power of a whirlwind sweep around me (Anaya 12).” A series of events occur throughout the story which makes Antonio overprotective of La Ultima. For instance, when Antonio and Ultima go to his grandfather’s house to cure his uncle, “Some women bowed their heads, other made the sign of the cross (Anaya 104).” Crossing your forehead in front of someone who is helping your family is a sign of disrespect. I feel that if I were Antonio, I would feel very offended because Ultima is my friend and nobody should be disrespected in front of the people you care for the most. As Antonio grows, he finds himself questioning his religion and comes to accept that everything is not what it seems. For example, Antonio realizes that the people of the town can be very judgemental and will blindly follow anyone because they fear the unknown. Antonio has to deal with is brothers who are led astray by the prostitutes of the town and their unrealistic dreams. After the war ended, his brothers came back, but with different plans for themselves. They leave because they want to be free, but I believe that they chain
Antonio begins to ponder his relationship with Ultima and her seemingly magical powers. Antonio is extremely worried about separating from his mother and he secretly hopes that Ultima's magic will help him get through school. He has had a strong connection with Ultima but now that school is starting he knows that she will not be around to help him. Their bond is becoming more separated, but Antonio is becoming more independent. This is especially hard for Antonio because not only is being separated from his mother, but Ultima as well. Furthermore, Antonio relates the feeling of Ultima´s touch with the feeling of the dirt devil. Antonio begins to realize that although the forces of good and evil may have a similar feel, the souls and the intentions
As Pope Francis once said, “Each of us has a vision of good and of evil.” Over time, everyone develops his own idea of good and evil and must choose which to follow. Throughout Rudolfo Anaya’s novel Bless Me, Ultima, the theme of good versus evil is revealed through Antonio’s feeling and thoughts toward a variety of settings. The people and events that Antonio associates with specific settings illustrate the theme of good versus evil.
Throughout the book Antonio is introduced to many new ideas. The first is the experiences he has with Ultima. Ultima is a healer who learned
