Current Controversy On Child Discipline

Certainly, there are other ways of disciplining one’s children other than spanking. Some examples include natural consequences, logical consequences, distraction, positive discipline, reward system, and point system. For example, instead of spanking; positive discipline is a method of discipline. Positive discipline is when a parent praises their children when they do good, but take their privileges away when they do bad. There have been many surveys and observations over which method of discipline is the most effective, but all parents have their own opinion and beliefs.

One very simple word that describes discipline is training. A child is not born with the knowledge of what is acceptable or expected. A parent must invest their own time and patience while showing love and exemplary behavior while molding their children into becoming well behaved (Child Abuse vs. Discipline). Being a parent is a hard enough job already, but when it comes to being a parent having to discipline your child, it becomes much harder. It takes time for a child to learn and process new behaviors, and this is a reason a parent must not have a short fuse when it comes to discipling their children.

With discipline is all about reinforcing positive behaviors. One example can be to give out praises when a positive social behavior has been shown and encourage to continue the behavior. As the previous example that I used, if the parents had explained that it is not appropriate to hit or throw things at people. Then the child would have learned that what he did was wrong and would likely learn not to do it again if he is given an acceptable consequence to his behavior. When disciplining a child they must receive a consequence that is appropriate for his or her age.

Discipline is basically calm and controlled behaviour. It is when rules and boundaries are put in place and if those rules are broken then punishments are given to correct disobedience and to enforce discipline. By being disciplined it should also improve someone’s morale. It is about changing behaviour.

Discipline is “the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior, using punishment to correct disobedience.” A question that comes to mine is; who gets define the amount of “punishment?” And who gets to decide the rules and code of behavior?  Is it the parents or guardians, or is it the governmental agencies?

One controversy is Children's testimony. Several high profile cases suggested that children's testimony about abuse is not always accurate. The child may have been brainwashed by the mother or someone else. Therefore, it is not always accurate. Another controversy is recovered memories of abuse. Some believe repressed memories are not valid, others believe they typically are. It does seem that some recovered memories are suspect, as are sometimes non-repressed memories. Recovered memories are usually revealed through hypnosis and it has been found that those are not always true memories although some may true.

This incident sparked controversy on the topic of where the line is drawn between discipline and abuse. Oxford dictionary defines corporal punishment as: “physical punishment, such as caning or flogging.” On one hand, many parents argue that spanking or other corporal punishments are not abusive because it teaches respect and consequences for bad behavior. However, on the other hand, others maintain that spanking and other corporal punishments are harmful because it does not teach respect but instead inspires fear in the child and does not effectively teach them what they did wrong or what they did to deserve such punishment. Seeing both sides of the argument, I argue that the line between abuse and discipline is crossed when the punishment causes damage to the child, whether physical or psychological. I would go on to argue that spanking and other corporal punishments are not ideal because it does not show the child what he or she did wrong, can escalate into harsher punishment and borderline abuse, and has been shown to not be effective and can actually cause more behavioral problems in children.

Many people today are getting arrested for simply disciplining a child. But, in older times disciplining a child set good moral standards and taught that child on what that child was supposed to do and what not to do. There is a fine line between abuse and discipline. So what is child abuse? Child abuse consists of any act of commission or omission that endangers or impairs a child’s physical or emotional health and development. Child abuse includes any damage done to a child which cannot be reasonably explained and which is often represented by an injury or series of injuries appearing to be non-accidental in nature. If you saw a teacher hitting their student, would you think it was okay or would you disagree? Corporal punishment of any child in school should be illegal in all states. Corporal punishment in school is causing the student pain in response to undesired behavior. It might involve hitting the student across the buttocks or the hand with a cane, wooden paddle, slipper, belt, or wooden yardstick (ruler). With corporal punishment you are not promoting a safe school, you can't sue the teacher who hit your child if the child gets hurt badly, and your also promoting violence into the vulnerable child's life; you're making a criminal. But, some might care to see that corporal punishment is okay and we can have it.

Discipline is one of the basic things a child learns from his parents before he or she faces the outside world to learn more about life as a whole. Teaching this trait can depend on how the parent shows it to their child and how they explain the importance of having this trait both in and out of their homes. Misbehaving children cannot be avoided as they are curious little beings and they have a tendency to explore. But there are some parents, even teachers, who do not tolerate misbehaving and they resort to corporal punishments such as spanking to make sure the child never forgets how painful it is to misbehave as they will remember the punishment entailed to it and become more disciplined. Today, many people have this notion that physical abuse is in no way a solution to helping children discern between right and wrong. Often this approach to disciplining has resulted in two outcomes, one is where the child becomes more tolerant and is willing to adhere to what he/she has been told, or the other which more often results in children developing a sense of anguish and desire to revolt.
