Cyberbullying: Common In The United States

According to the American Psychological Association, “Bullying is a form of aggressive behavior in which someone intentionally and repeatedly causes another person injury or discomfort. Bullying can take the form of physical contact, words or more subtle actions” (Bullying, 2013). People bully each other for several reasons and there are different outcomes that are a result of those reasons. People can be bullied physically, emotionally, or verbally. Bullying can take place at school or online. Bullying should be a considered a crime, but kids get away with it all the time; furthermore prevention can be used in order to keep kids safe from bullying.

About 97% of today’s youth are connected to the internet in some way, and about 20-40% have experienced some form of cyberbullying at least once.1 This means that about 200-400 million people between the age of 15 and 24 have been cyberbullied. Cyberbullying has been an issue since the internet was first introduced for public use, and it is still a rising issue today. That is why it is our job to fix it.

Bullies start at a young age and carry on, this helps them feel good about what they are doing and who they are as a person. The only way to make a difference and try to stop bullying and cyberbullying is if the parents are there to help. “Parents of bullies are advised to take the problem seriously, looking for the causes of anger or frustration, letting them know that hurtful behavior will not be tolerated, supervising their behavior more closely, “punishing”bullying with positive acts toward others and teaching nonviolent ways of solving problems.” (PERSONAL HEALTH pg. 3) This illustrates that not only the school and parents but the community to must collaborate to control bullying. Parents need to supervise their children on social media and all places in their life, until the children can understand that this is not okay and that we can stand up to bullying. Bullying and cyberbullying can lead to serious causes to the victims and everyone around them. “It is found that children who bully are at risk for engaging in more serious violent acts, like fighting frequently and carrying weapons.” (PERSONAL HEALTH pg.) This proves that the actions of the bullies are long term effects. If someone is to hurt themselves or one another because of how someone made them feel not only will those certain people be hurting inside but the other family and friends in their lives. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary bullying means, “prone to or characterized by overbearing mistreatment and domination of others.” Bullying can be done in many different ways, such as over social media(cyberbullying), verbally, and physically. All bullies are trying to get a reaction from their victim. However, if people stand up to the bully most of the time it will stop, if that doesn't work a punch to the nose will solve everything else.

In this wonderful and at times, overwhelming age of technology, in which any person can send and receive information instantaneously and anonymously, cyber-bullying is rapidly emerging as one of the top problems facing today's youth. Cyber bullying is described by the National Conference of State Legislators as being "the willful and repeated use of cell phones, computers, and other electronic computer devices to harass and threaten others." Recent, highly publicized cases of cyber-bullying such as the stories of Tyler Clemente and Audrie Pott are only the tip of the iceberg in what is rapidly becoming an epidemic of cyber-bullying in America. Every year there are more than six-thousand people in America that are being cyberbullied. Cyberbullying is when one person, electronically communicates with another person, but in a harsh way.

The general public has known for a few years now that cyberbullying has affected our children all over the nation through social media. Thousands of young adults have retaliated from being cyberbullied in various ways, but does cyberbullying affect the school’s faculty and staff as well and how does cyberstalking affect our school officials? Also, does North Carolina have any laws against Cyberstalking? If so, what are the penalties if you are convicted of being a Cyber Stalker?

In An Exploratory Study of Cyberbullying with Undergraduate University Students, written by Carol M. Walker, Beth Rajan Sockman, and Steven Koehn, the article explores the topic of cyberbullying. It looks into what undergraduate students go through, while it also gives a basis for future research in cyberbullying on college campuses. One of the research questions being posed is what instances of cyberbullying do undergraduate students experience, and what role does gender play in cyberbullying at the undergraduate level? The other question is what forms of technology do undergraduate students use to perpetrate or receive bullying, and how often does it occur?

Cyberbullying is an epidemic that can effect anyone. It is a disease that is spreading more rapidly every day and is costing us our most precious resource, our children.

On a study of top ten reasons why teenagers in America commit suicide, cyber bullying ranks number two. Millions of lives, which are so full of youth, are stolen away every hour due to the callous harassment and humiliation towards them on social media. Cyber bullying should be deleted because cyber bullying installs low self esteem, anxiety, and the desperate need for an escape from these attacks in teenagers.

Michael M. Honda states that “everyone in America likely has a bullying story, whether as a victim, bully, or as a witness.” Cyberbullying has become a major epidemic in the modern day world because everyone has access to the internet in some way. By taking an in depth look at cyberbullying, one can see just how urgent it is to stop it, because not only can it strike anywhere at any time, cyberbullying can also lead to suicide and cause serious mental health issues.

Cyberbullying is the abuse of an electronic source to degrade and devalue others. It is cruel and immoral but unfortunately unavoidable in today’s age.

There is a lot of bullying that goes on in this world, a majority of it being cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is a constant problem with young kids on social media. Cyberbullying is a risk for anyone, “Cyberbullying is deliberately using digital media to communicate false, embarrassing, or hostile information about another person. It is the most common online risk for all teens and is a peer-to-peer risk” (AAP). Nonetheless, bullying is always going to happen and cyberbullying allows it to happen

Bullying, in its many forms, is becoming an extremely hazardous problem that many individuals endure. Bullies torment others because they themselves have insecurities, have been bullied themselves, or have a mental illness that brings out the worst in them. Nevertheless, bullying can physically and emotionally destroy the victim, whether it is by physical abuse, cyber bullying, or verbal abuse.
