Gatsby is more caring and giving . While Tom is more selfish , arrogant. For example, tom wanted to investigate on gatsby when he found out they knew each other. Gatsby is very obsessed with daisy so much that he bought a house just so that daisy would one day come over. ”Gatsby bought that house so that daisy would be just across the bay.

In the Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby and Tom Buchanan have a couple similarities and differences. In the novel The Great Gatsby written by Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby and Tom Buchanan have many differences, from how they acquired their money to their personalities. For example, Gatsby is charming and liked by many, whereas Tom is disliked by many due to his arrogance and uncontrollable temper. However despite their differences they do have some similarities, like how they are fighting for Daisy's love and affection and the fact that they are both extremely wealthy.

Though these two characters come from different backgrounds and are of different classes, it can be noticed that they are similar in various ways. One distinctive characteristic that they both seem to share is an unwillingness to accept defeat. Gatsby, who through out the story is trying to win Daisy over, cannot stand the fact that Daisy has moved on and refuses to accept that there is no way to change the situation. Tom also refuses to let go of Daisy when he finds out that she is having an affair with Gatsby, and instead decides to confront Gatsby and Daisy about this.

Tom and Gatsby are both men in their early thirties, who are wealthy, but Tom comes from old money and Gatsby is a part of the nouveau riche. Due to their difference in social class, they present themselves differently. Tom doesn’t throw extravagant parties and flaunt his money like Gatsby does. Gatsby and Tom are similar characters, but they differ in their personalities. Tom is aggressive, egotistical, and believes that he is above everyone else, whereas Gatsby has a more reserved personality. No one even knew who Gatsby was at his own parties. They are similar in that they both want Daisy. Tom wants Daisy because his pride would be lost if she left him for a man of the lower class, and Gatsby wants Daisy because she was the first person who made him feel like he was a part of the upper class. Tom doesn’t have a goal in life, but to continue living his privileged life. Gatsby’s sole goal in life was to win Daisy back. Overall, there are many similarities and differences in the two characters.
